Cache number 4450 - woo hoo!

I've been wanting to hunt this cache for a very long time. I make periodic trips from Oregon to Fairview for family reunions, but never have been able to justify breaking away for a day for a cache hunt. Well, today I finally got the chance, and it was a great day for it! Beautiful blue skies, wonderful wildflowers, and a fun hike with a bit of uphill there at the end. Cache is in great shape. It was very cool to check out the original logbook! After signing and hiding the cache away again, I was fortunate to meet bythewind777 on my way down the trail. It was fun to chat caching a little before heading off for more of the caches in the neighborhood. Thanks for keeping this great old cache going for so long!

Well, the stars aligned just perfectly for us as we set out to have the GC57 "Geocache" experience during out short stay in Phoenix. As I was checking out car rentals, the least expensive option was "small SUV" - how often does that happen? I took it as a geocaching omen, nobody can convince me otherwise. I read up on the logs for this cache and the ones around it, and the morning of the hunt we stopped at the Mesa Ranger Station to get our (free) Bulldog Canyon pass with the gate combos. We warmed up with the short hike to Senda de Tonto (GCED) and then we were ready to head for the gate. When we arrived, we found a group of geocachers already there, but without a pass. Looks like it was geost4fun, PatrickStar, and Mt Goat. We had a good chat with them - looks like they were able to get the pass and find the cache in the end!

We drove out to the spot on the dirt road about as close as we could get and found a spot where we could pull off. We made sure we took a mark at the car and then set off on a straight line for the cache! We rolled along the in and out of washes for a while. We got within about 700 feet of ground zero when I started a rattler! We weren't ever in great danger, but I admit that when I first heard that sound, it was more than a gasp that emerged from my mouth! We proceeded with a bit more caution, and soon we were signing the log of the oldest active cache in Arizona! We made our trades and hid it back up again. The trip back to the car was uneventul, but we were certainly glad we had taken the mark. Many many thanks for keeping this great old cache going for so long!

Sadly, the X is all torn up. And also sadly, we didn't find the cache. Hopefully we'll get it next time!
