Eckerd College, a liberal arts institution, was founded in 1958 as Florida Presbyterian College. Its first freshman class entered in 1960. Eckerd College is related by covenant to the Presbyterian Church.

The church is named after the Cuban born settler Antonio Maximo Hernandez, who was reputedly the first white settler of the Peninsula. Maximo had been given a land grant of 160 acres under the Armed Occupation Act for assisting Robert E. Lee when he and his troops came through the area looking for Seminole Indians. The position of the Hernandez homestead - the first in Pinellas county - is still in dispute, but an 1840's plat map clearly indicates a section of the southern Pinellas Point which has been dedicated to him as the Maximo Beach Archaeological Site. The Maximo Beach site consists of large Paleo-Indian shell midden deposits that date from the late Archaic through the Spanish Contact period. The largest mound and midden temple complex in the county is in this park, in position:
