Description
The concept is to see how many VW Kombis you can spot in a WEEK.
The Volkswagen Type 1 (aka Microbus) was the first van introduced by VW in 1950. It has gone through several design modifications from the T1 to the T5 over the 50+ years of production. See Wikipedia, Volkswagen Type 2 for more history. The term Kombi comes from Kombinationskraftwagen, or "combined-use vehicle".
There are still lots of variations of the VW Kombis out there, but they seem to have been overtaken in numbers by other kinds of camping vans. Let’s see how many of the various VW vans & transporters we can find in a WEEK as we go around collecting our geocache finds.
This cache is commemorating the Car Show held annually on the Saturday of the October long weekend at the Old Bar airfield on the NSW Mid-North coast. Then on the Sunday there is a yearly attempt at the greatest number of Kombis in one locality. So far, they have been quite a few under the world record of 500, but it does not stop us from trying again. So if you are looking for something to do this long weekend, drop by and have a look, bring your camera and GPSr, and you will be guaranteed one cache as well.
Only one cache find per person or team will be allowed each month, (I will have to trust your integrity of dating the finds correctly). When you find more in the same week, add their photos to your cache log for that week in the month. If you own your own Kombi you need to claim your find with at least one another Kombi.
To claim this cache you need to:-
- Take a picture of the Kombi(s) (hopefully with you and/or a GPSr in each photo). Record its’ registration plate if registered;
- If in an undercover car park, they must be on the same level, and no further than 400 m apart (you may have to be inventive to get the coordinates);
- A registered Kombi can be respotted by others - it'll be interesting to see its’ travels; and,
- Record the coordinates of the location you spotted the Kombis in the cache log entry (if logging with mobile phones while mobile please ensure that it is not the driver photographing; I’m sure it does not have to be said, but there you go!).
If you are absolutely desperate for a cache find and have only found one Kombi, you may make it up with a “Wicked” camper and I will probably be lenient.
Any anecdotes or history in your log regarding the Kombi would be appreciated. Thanks to Grank (GA0715) for his ideas re. cache guidelines.
The Kombis don't have to be as garish as this picture we found in a restaurant at Burleigh Heads, Qld.
The Prize for 2007, goes to Kane D (aka Dukes of Hazard) who turned up to the Old Bar car show / record attempt. He scored over 175 photos of identifiable Kombis. Kane received a ceramic Kombi 'piggy bank' for his posting of over 180 photos.
Let's see what you guys and gals can get this year - 2008.

TASMANIA
I was in Evandale on Saturday 6th August to look for a GC cache Angus Visits Evandale when I saw this Kombi (at the listed coordinates) registered C 76 DW in the street. A bit rusty in places but obviously still in use. On the following Wednesday 10th August I was travelling to Gravelly Beach to get two GA moveables, Little Blue Plane and Mr Whippy when I saw another Kombi travelling towards me but no photo was possible as I was driving. But not far from my destination another Kombi registered AP 1206 (S41 17.255 E146 58.525) was parked beside the road. I managed to do a quick stop for a quick photo.
We spotted this Classic Kombi Van and remarked on its condition, someone has looked after it.
Saw this Kombi in a front yard as I was after caches in the area.
Driving home after visiting a friend (Sunday 21-11-2021) I noticed this Kombi FA7029 parked beside the road.
S41 26.180 E147 07.139 TREVALLYN TASMANIA
I saw this Kombi FC9155 on my way to return some books to a friend this morning.
Both Kombis were in very good condition.
I saw this Kombi C 90 UX at a gathering of Special Interest cars at George Town on Sunday 5th September.
S41 03.673 E146 47.606 LOW HEAD TASMANIA
On the same Sunday I was following a FJ Holden trying to get a photo when I saw this Kombi DTM-977 parked in a garage at Low Head. It is in excellent condition.
I found this Kombi Registered No. A 97 BG parked beside the road in Norwood. It certainly has seen better days and from the contents it appears to be owned and used by a musician.
Then a week later I saw it again outside Office Works Invermay.
Saturday 07/08/2021 I saw the Red Herring Kombi S41 26.268 E147 08.229

Thanks for the Locationless Cache
We were at a hall in Mooroopna looking to buy the fresh cherries in the vicinity when I spotted this cute Kombi.
Certainly not your usual type of Kombi, but distinctively a Kombi.
Thanks for this location less for my daily find.

When I saw this Locationless I thought it would be easy but I looked for more than one Kombi in one place but no luck. So I decided to improvise. Tonight I took a photo of my friends Kombi next to my car at Photoclub, and added a photo of a modified Kombi we saw a few years ago on a Photoclub outing to Ironfest at Katoomba. Hope that is OK. Thank you for letting me log this.

ready for a trip up north.
It is licenced but has no plates on yet.
This cut down drag racing Kombi was an exhibit at Agquip Gunnedah and was getting a lot of attention. With the huge numbers attending it's quite likely there were others in the carpark but we didn't notice them. Still have a few days to go to add to our weekly kombi tally though. TFTC Grahame Cookie.
When we saw this line of kombis coming towards us this morning we quickly pulled over and grabbed the GPS and camera. Managed to get 4 of them in the photo.
(This cache brings back some fond memories for us...Our first family car was a maroon and white kombi and in the 70s we lived in one while we travelled Europe.)
Thanks Grahame Cookie
mr sharnie's tribe's family had a couple of kombis when he was growing up, great for fitting in a big family in the days before compulsory seatbelts. TFTC
Beautiful weather, fantastic location and immaculately restored.

The 2nd one was at the marina car park at S30 18.177 E8.581 and we had a chat to the owner. When Mr Beetle asked him how he got on washing it as it had large open vents in the back he just smiled and said that he didn't wash it. It looked pretty daggy but the metal was actually quite solid.
The 3rd one was white and being driven by an elderly couple. Mr Beetle suspects that they have had it since new but we didn't manage a photo of that one.
Thanks.

I've been seeing quite a few kombis lately, there must be someone reconditioning them locally. They inspired me to use one as my entry in the BINGO cache race - GA5004 the Peace Love Microbus currently hiding at Clunes Northern NSW.
Thanks for the cache.
The little red tags call them 'Hippy Vans' - got to love kids
Thanks for the cache Grahame Cookie
The first was on Alfords Point Bridge, Padstow NSW southbound, and the 2nd parked near the Sydney Observatory while I was placing a Munzee code there.

Well, having found several in the month of November - I have started my December finds - yeah, I know it says finds in a week, but as I also can only log once a month, I just keep adding them as the month goes on - so far (7th Dec) there are two I had a chance to get a pic of (missed the 3rd today as I drove past - and only got the bumper bar of it.
First was in Ultimo (sydney) and 2nd was in Sydney city.
As we drove home in the rain, an orange-yellow Kombi was spied parked in a private drive way. It wasn’t appropriate to get out and get very wet to have a GPS in the photo. Two photos have been added in the Gallery: side view of the Kombi in the driveway; rear number plate
.
.
A double bonus, as I had passed this one on the way (only managed a poor snap of it though)
.
.
Two days later, I snapped this one at Padstow
.
.
And then this one later that day at Kurnell
.
.
The following week, I spotted a few kombis in the Wollongong area
.
.
.
.
And this was on Sutherland on the way home from the 'Gong that same day
.
.
Not to mention the many I was unable to snap during the month.....
I spotted a few in the apst week, but never have time to snap them in the traffic usually. This would have been about number 4 in a week at least.
Whever I see one, I'm instantly transported, for just a second, back to 1969.
But while trig hunting and geocaching with rogerw3 the other day, we uncovered a lovely specimen inside the cache container of "Gundungurra" (GC240VQ) near The Oaks, NSW.
Hope it fits in with the theme of this locationless!
Found this VW kombi with pjmpjm in the "Gundungurra" cache GC240VQ. It is too cute to pass up, we did not take it and left it for the next cacher to find.
And, don't forget to come to the Manning Valley/Old Bar for the October long weekend, as there will be DOZENS of the Kombis at the festival.
This well travelled surfer's van has seen better days even though its present condition is very good; but certainly should not deteriorate. Accident (unless it falls) will never mar its body again!
Situated road side in Liverpool Street, Hobart, Tasmania; one wonders what stories it could tell were it able to talk.
It certainly doesnot cost the owners money but could be bringing in a fortune.
The parking job done by its last driver is obviously impressive!!
Cheers and TFTC; OLdSaint.

Edited 19th Aug.
Later the same week I spotted this one elsewhere, so not another find, but adding the pic anyway.
This one was spotted at S33 53.822 e 151 16.311
Seems this is now a classic. If your keen, for a cool 30 grand you could be driving this beauty to the next Mega event.
Here's a link to the car. Not sure if it'll still work when the cars sold.
