Description

Cathedrals in Australia - St Peter's Cathedral, Armidale

St Peter's Cathedral, Armidale is the mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Armidale in New South Wales, Australia.

Named for St Peter, the cathedral replaced the previous St Peter's Parish Church at the creation of the diocese. The cathedral was consecrated for worship in 1875 and the foundation stone was laid by James F. Turner, Bishop of Grafton and Armidale.

The cathedral building was designed by the Canadian architect John Horbury Hunt who also designed Booloominbah and Trevenna at the University of New England and cathedrals in the adjoining dioceses of Newcastle and Grafton. It is constructed of "Armidale blue brick", using clay dug from Saumarez, the property of prominent local F. J. White. Uralla granite was used for the foundations, steps and keystones of the arches.

For more information, see the Wikipedia entry.

Denomination: Anglican
Founded: 1875
Dedication: St Peter the Apostle

Sorry about the sun, but it wanted in on any shot showing the cathedral, the sign and myself.

No time for even a glimpse in here - it'll wait until the next visit.

For us, this series of cathedrals raised a question - what makes a church a cathedral? Clearly not what MrsG thought, a steeple, because the Presbyterian Church not far from this has one and it's not listed. But these days you don't have to die wondering, Think and we went where everyone goes, the net Very Happy ....... and this is what we got. A cathedral contains the seat of a bishop thus serving as the central church of a diocese.

With that sorted we rolled up for a pic carefully getting the GPS in the corner, peering up and down so as not to cut off the steeple though we now know even if we did it wouldn't reduce it to a church, Razz ......... a-n-d snap. Happy with that we left. Don't know what forces were at play but the result was two cathedral pics (St.Mary & Josephs as well) and no GPS in either. Shocked We may get back for another shot but hey! this could be bigger than both of us!

Pulled up at the park for a relief stop and to let my car cool down. Having engine troubles today. Not good. Meant to be at an engagement party in 2 hours. Realised there were a few gca caches here to find so went for a walk while letting the car cool. Pretty cool cathedrals here. Thanks for the virtual.
