Description

Cathedrals in Australia - St Andrew's Cathedral, Sydney

St Andrew's Cathedral is the cathedral church of the Anglican Diocese of Sydney in the Anglican Church of Australia. The cathedral is the seat of the Anglican Archbishop of Sydney and Metropolitan of New South Wales.

Located in central Sydney, the cathedral is one of the city's finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture. Designed by Edmund Blacket, it was ready for services and consecrated in 1868, making it the oldest cathedral in Australia. Joan Kerr described St Andrew's as "a perfect example of the colonial desire to reproduce England in Australia in the mid nineteenth century."

St Andrew's Cathedral is built to the cruciform shape traditional of Christian churches and symbolic of the faith. The body of the cathedral, or nave, with lower aisles on either side, is crossed by the transept, forming a chancel for the seating of clergy and choir at the eastern end. The sides of the choir are traditionally known as cantoris, the side of the precentor, or cantor, and decani, the side of the dean, the senior clerical appointee within the cathedral. See Cathedral architecture and Cathedral diagram.

It is customary for cathedrals to be orientated on an east-west axis with the main door to the west and the sanctuary to the east. St Andrew's conformed to that tradition. But a major thoroughfare, George Street, runs by the eastern rather than the western end, making the main entrance less accessible. It also meant that when an electric tram system was installed in the street, the noise frequently drowned out the service of Holy Communion.

In 1941 the interior was therefore reoriented. A new raised chancel floor was built in the west end, the west door was permanently closed and the reredos was placed immediately in front of it. All the internal fittings of the chancel were relocated, the positioning of the reredos right against the wall creating some extra space. There was a claim that the acoustics were improved but this is spurious.[citation needed] While, on one hand, the trams would not have seemed so loud, being more remote, the negative effects on the internal acoustics were significant and a very large number of choristers were employed to make themselves heard.

In 1999–2000 major conservation and restoration work was undertaken to restore the original internal layout, whereby the sanctuary was relocated at the cathedral's eastern end. This was achieved under deanship of the Very Reverend Boak Jobbins. As part of the reorientation and conservation, the Whitely organ was removed from the north transept gallery, thus revealing one of the larger of Hardman's windows including, notably and somewhat controversially, the Crucifixion, the only depiction in the entire cathedral, together with the crucifixions of Saints Andrew and Peter.

I travelled to Sydney the day before to attend an award ceremony in the evening. After a late breakfast it was time to check out of my motel. The St Andrews Cathedral virtual cache was only 120 metres away. I snapped a quick photo with suitcase in hand before boarding the train to the airport. Thanks for the virtual Team MavEtJu

Down in Sydney City to see the Phantom of the Opera for our 10th anniversary and we (mostly Dad) couldn't resist the urge to grab some virtual caches on the way.

This Cathedral seems a bit less impressive than some of the specimens we have found in the smaller towns, but that is probably only due to all the high rise buildings around it.

Dad actually did a couple of jobs on the Cathedral years ago when he was working with the kids Pop.

Thanks for another stop on our inner city tour.

I had to come into town on the coldest day in Sydney for at least 25 years and in the wet strolling around finding caches wasn't high on the priority list. But seeing as I had to get off at Town Hall anyway to make my way to the venue I thought I would stop and grab this one. Thanks Team MavEtJu.

In Sydney on a business trip (a very scary one; I was having my capability assessed!) and I decided to de-stress with some geocaching. I wandered this way after visiting my favourite building in the whole of Sydney; the QVB. The jacarandas here were absolutely on show so I chose to take a selfie with one as well as the cathedral. Walking around the CBD before heading off to....work. Only here for a week and today was my best chance to grab a few more city caches. Walked past here in the way back to the apartment.

Thanks for another virtual Team MaveEtJu...

Had a few hours to kill between trains in Sydney today so decided to cache my time away. I've started walking for 40 minutes before breakfast every morning and today I decided to head this way and find a few cathedrals and caches before catching up with Ziggiau. This was one of them.

I love all the decorative spires here. So many pretty points. Would have liked to get a cool angled shot of a number of the points but a tree wasn't going to let me get a good shot. Oh well. haha.

#GA2255 - 15:15; In Sydney for a few days with the geohoney and some of the in-laws. After the in-laws headed off, it was time to collect a few caches around the city which have appeared since my last visit. This on fit the bill, so I wandered over and grabbed a snap with the iPhone as the serious camera stayed at home this trip. Another old building in Sydney I've passed many times, but today, I stopped and grabbed a snap as I passed. TFTC Team MavEtJu Very HappyClan Cerberus

The kids are at Boree Regetta with the scouts. So that can only mean one thing: jump in the train to Kings Cros, grab one of these "$2 for 30 minutes" bikes and make the area unsafe for the next couple of hours.
