Description
The St Kilda Street Bridge is the oldest extant reinfiorced concrete beam bridge in Victoria and possibly Australia, still standing and at work for over 110 years, and dutifully carrying vehicles and pedestrians over the Elwood Canal, about 10 km south of the Melbourne CBD.
The bridge was designed and constructed in 1905 by civil engineer John Monash (later General Sir John Monash) of the Reinforced Concrete & Monier Pipe Company.
The bridge marks a turning point where the acceptability of reinforced concrete for civil engineering works and building had been accepted. The bridge demonstrates the technical innovation achieved by Monash in the early years of the twentieth century and the earliest developments of reinforced concrete technology in Australuia.

I was out doing some shopping and stopped by for a quick visit.
Having driven over this historic bridge countless times I felt it was about time I paid a bit more attention.
Whilst the park across the road was extremely busy the Canal Path was reasonably quiet.
Lots of photos taken. Thank you for this cache and for highlighting part of our history.
Personal note: This bridge was built in the same year as my father was born.
Thanks Whheels.
So grateful to visit here and learn something about it here.
Thanks for the virtual cache
A very quick find here today. How challenging can it be to find the marker? Not very, but that's not the reason for the cache. An interesting read especially when you get to the reason for the heritage marker. Fascinating.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks for identifying this location for a geocache today.

GAFF 1
After a fairly lazy day, I figured I should go out and get some exercise, so I took the bike on the train to Prahran, to see where the hunt led.
This was where, in typically convoluted fashion.
A most interesting piece of history on the canal. Thanks for highlighting it for us, Whheels.
