Description

The Gallows of Hunter

Hobart's Hunter Street is not only the site where Hobart had its beginnings, but the location of a tiny rocky island which once stood out from the main shore of Sullivans Cove, and was given the name Hunter Island. Founded on convict labour, it was here that the first successful attempt to establish a permanent European colony in Van Diemen's Land was made. From these early beginnings, the Hunter Street site evolved into Tasmania's principal trading port in the mid-nineteenth century. The growth of the port was fundamental to the growth of the city of Hobart and it was here where large-scale commercial and industrial development took place, coexisting with residential life.

This cache appears to have everyone homing in on the notice boards at the end of Hunter Street. This is not Ground Zero. Look at your co-ordinates they should take you to the front of the Grand Chancellor Hotel. To get the info you need to go into the Hotel and into the bar region there are several small boards facing inwards on the lawn.

Took me awhile to spot these boards.

Then the aha moment.

Lucky not to many having breakfast at this hour.

Made for some fun research.

Hello Grumbligrot thanks for the cache

Have been here before looking for information.
I was disappointed that the questions aren't in the description as I didn't know what to look for so I had to take a few photos and hope for the best.

This is the first GCA cache I've done in a while. To be honest I've looked for the answers before but with no luck. I did lots of reading of signs and interpreted the information to get some of the answers. Maybe I was in the wrong place as I couldn't find one accurately. I got there in the end, thanks grumbligrot. I do enjoy history caches.

#GA2861 - 18:25; The plan for today was to head down to the Tasman Peninsula for some sightseeing and perhaps a cache or two. Driving through Sorell, the geohoney and I both commented on how much it had grown since our last visit about 5 years ago, before grabbing a coffee at Macca's on the way through. Stopped to refuel in Dunalley, which surprisingly had the cheapest diesel I had since since arriving in Tasmania on Saturday. After we finished our tour, we took the tourist track through Carlton River and on through Dodges Ferry and Lewisham. Headed over to Sandy Bay when we got back to the city and then cruised through Battery Point on our way to Elizabeth Street Pier for a coldie, then on to Hunter Street for a couple more history caches on our way back to the hotel. This one took a bit of work to find the answers, but got there in the end. TFTC Grumbligrot Very HappyClan Cerberus

Always enjoy a wander around this area finding the recent additions to the plaques and information boards. A reminder of how far we have come but how far we have yet to go.

Thanks for another history cache Grumbligrot.

Found on our holiday in Hobart. Finding the signposts for this one was much more difficult than anyone anticipated! After expanding our search away from the coordinates and ground plaques, the signs were found and soon later, we had our answers - very interesting history here. A very unique and interesting way to position information boards to the public! Beautiful views of the waterfront. TFTC grumbligrot! Clan Cerberus

Walk by this spot often on my (Mr T) lunchtime walks, and have read the history boards before, but needed to revisit to refresh knowledge of the history of this area. One of many very interesting pieces of Hobart history. TFTC
