Description
The ABC: ABC North Coast
ABC North Coast is an ABC Local Radio station based in Lismore and broadcasting to the Northern Rivers region in New South Wales. This includes the towns and cities of Grafton, Ballina, Casino and Murwillumbah. The station began as 2NR in 1936 originally based in Grafton, moving to Lismore in 1989.
ABC North Coast began broadcasting from Grafton in 1936 and later moved to new studios in Lismore in 1989.
On the evening of July 17, 1936, the then Australian Broadcasting Commission launched the Northern Rivers regional station, 2NR with an official function held at the Saraton Theatre in Grafton.
The Daily Examiner published a statement from the Postmaster-General's Department on the following day explaining that 2NR was part of a government plan to provide a broadcasting service right across the country.
"In 1929 the Postmaster-General's Department devised a plan of national broadcasting, having its object the provision of fading free broadcasting service to at least 95 per cent of the population of the Commonwealth and a reasonably good service to the remainder of the people in the remote areas."
"In the present constructional stage the group consists of seven stations, two of which are now working. The third station is 2NR, the Northern Rivers regional, located at Lawrence, approximately 20 miles from Grafton."
