Description

Gaols of NSW

HM Gundagai

Built: ~1859

Opened: 1859

Closed: 1909 but remained as a lock-up until 1970s

Clasification: Minimum Security

Following the devastating 1852 flood, the town lock-up needed to be rebuilt as a watch-house or gaol. Alexander Dawson, the colonial architect, designed the building and Charles Hardy won the tender for it’s construction in 1859. Hardy and Hodson builders completed further additions in 1861, and in 1863 a kitchen was built for the gaol, designed by James Barner, the Government Architect.

The stone boundary wall which still stands today was constructed in 1866. The gaol consists of a cluster of structures including, The Gaolers residence, the external kitchen block, the hospital (original gaol), the gaol including exercise yard, an outhouse, outbuilding, a well and archaeological remains.

Prisoners with short-term sentences who had been sentenced at Gundagai or at courts in the surrounding district were incarcerated in the Gundagai Gaol. Prisoners, including bushrangers, who were in transit to other gaols were also accommodated there. Although no longer in use, Gundagai Gaol is one of the few remaining gaol compounds dating from 1859 and a rare and largely intact example of its type.

In 1870 the Gundagai Gaol was classed as a ‘lock-up’ or ‘proclaimed gaol’ and could accommodate from four to twenty prisoners. During this year the actual number of prisoners received included 4 debtors; 19 males and 2 females awaiting trial; 55 males and 3 females ‘in transit’; 11 males under sentence to labour; 7 males and 3 females sentenced to imprisonment; with none in solitary confinement. The greatest number received at one time totalled 9.

Gundagai Gaol was closed in the 1970’s and a holding cell was constructed at the Gundagai Police Station.

We'd ducked into Gundagai for some sustenance and while the ordering was being done, I mosied on around the corner and up the hill to grab the necessary pickie for this one at 15:15. Dancing

Thanks Throsbyonchurch.

After a weekend of caching with The Empire, Happy Pants and Happy Feet in Wagga, I headed off by myself for some photographs, sightseeing, GCA's & Waymarks. I had a local Adventure Lab cache on my Radar and I managed a photo as I passed / visited each waypoint.
Many beautiful spots visited. I love travelling this big land of ours. Dancing

Thanks for highlighting this and for the cache Team MavEtJu. Clapping Amazing history I wouldn't have known about if it wasn't for caching. Clan Phoenix

While we were in Gindagai today we stopped by the old gaol and took the photo required to log this cache. We had been here looking for another cache some years ago.
Thanks for this virtual cache Throsbyonchurch. It is the first in your gaols of NSW we have attempted.
Our photo is attached.

#GA5097 - 10:15; Headed south of the border and took a detour through Gundagai for a few caches. Parked out the front and walked across the road to get the money shot. I do think I've passed by here on a previous caching mission. TFTC Throsbyonchurch Very HappyClan Cerberus

I saw some new caches being published in Gundagai last night. As I was already heading out of town today for the next few, I decided on leaving early to have a detour and attempt the FTF. I left Temora around 9:20am and I then drove straight to the Gundagai lookout to the first of the three. As I got out of the car, I took in the view for the second time as I have been here for a Geocache in the past. Next I went for a walk to GZ and soon after the FTF was signed and then replaced. One down! Then I headed to the one in the show grounds. Unfortunately there were muggles walking their dogs there at the time. So instead, I headed back out to try and find the third new cache. A quick find here. After that I went and found the GCA cache that I hadn't gotten yet and went to lunch. After lunch I headed back to the show ground one and this time the coast was clear and I also had another FTF. That makes 3 out of 3! Thanks for the caches, the FTF prize and the fun these caches gave me today. Now up the highway to my next event. Tftc
