Description

Another one for the Bushwalkers

This cache is located at Silver Lake, in the Western Lakes area of Tasmania's Central Plateau. The walking is easy and open through mostly low alpine vegetaion, with some light scrub and medium forest as you gently descend the Great Pine Tier to Lake Antimony. There is a myriad tarns and lagoons, expansive views to the Walls of Jerusalem and the southern peaks of the Cradle Mt - Lake St.Clair NP, and wildlife aplenty.

The camping at Silver Lake is excellent, and the Sunrise when I was there was, well...it was Golden.

Map reference - TASMAP 1:25,000 ADA covers the walk.

Access - Take the Lake Augusta Rd from Liaweenee on the Lake Highway, and follow it to Lake Ada, (2WD)parking at S41 53.022 E164 28.488. It is possible to continue on from here in 4WD if the gate is open, and continue for approx 5km to the point where no vehicles are permitted beyond, but would'nt be much quicker than walking because it's rough.

Walking time from Ada carpark to GZ (and best Camping spot at Lake Silver) is approx 3.5-4Hrs (excluding breaks). There is a reasonable unmarked track all the way to the hut at Lake Antimony (S41 53.413 E146 22.763). From Lake Antimony Hut, directly cross Powena Creek, and its basically faint pads from here.

I would recommend doing this walk as an overnighter, purely to soak up the ambience, however doing it as a long daywalk is possible.

If seeking this cache, please ensure you are appropriately and adequately prepared, competent navigation skills are essential.

If wanting to fish (there are plenty), it's fly and artificial lures only, and a licence is required.

Cache is a 200ml black Sistema, with logbook, pencil and stash note.

What better way to spend Australia Day than camped beside the most beautiful lake in the Central Highlands.
Walked in from Lake Ada yesterday in drizzly conditions but had nothing but awesome weather for the next 2 days. Cool
The fish were a plenty particularly during the well known 'spinner hatch'. The temperatures rose to a point that a swim was the only way to cool down and the night sky needed to be seen to be believed Clapping
One cache like this runs rings around a 1000 drivebys in my book.
The cache itself was in perfect condition and well placed to last the test of time and the conditions it endures.
Thanks a million Geoskid. The pictures dont do it justice. It really is a Golden place to visit Dancing

We have been wanting to do this one for some time now so it was great to finally be able to log it. We camped the night at Hut No. 5 and walked from there to find the cache. Had to strip off the boots to cross the creeks but it had been a good warm day so that was very enjoyable.
The co ordinates are spot on. The cache is in a great area & in very good conditon, nice & dry. Just had to chase away the spiders & ants!
Love doing these remote caches, thanks Geoskid

Camping at Silver again, checked out cache and all is well here. Heaps of fish in the lake at the moment.

Was in the area for a 3 day fishing trip. The fish weren't biting but at least I got what I wanted. A good location and an easy find.

We have been planning this walk for ages and finally made the trek for the hidden tupperware in the bush and unlike waddle Inn we found it with ease (phew)!

We had to strip off the lower bottom to ford both the creek crossings and it was quite bracing after 2" of snow melt according to a walker we met on the way in. They had dropped quite a bit on the way out but still had to remove the boots and bottom half of the trousers.

On arrival at Pine river we came face to face with the local platypus and not sure who got the biggest fright but he left the scene very very quickly. Saw him the next morning at sunrise along with a few trout, couple of Swans, the local Currawong and all sorts of other critters.

Terrific sheltered camping spot and we did plan to stay longer but for various reasons it turned into an over nighter and back out the next day.

Thanks Geoskid for these great bush walking caches. We would do 1 of these in preference to 100 drive by caches any day.

I have been to Silver lake many times from several different directions so today I decided as it was forecast to rain in the afternoon that I would do it as a day walk. This should not be undertaken lightly as it is about 28km round trip.
The day was not too impressive and photos do not do justice to the place. I had my lunch sheltering behind a large rock from the wind and watching for any sign of a fish. Not to be today but I had already managed to land a couple in Ada lagoon about 10min. from the car.
All up I was gone from the car for 8.5 hours.
Cache placement is excellent for the area well done Geoskid.
