Description

Scone's iconic monument.

This sculpture commemorates the role horses have played in the development of Australia and identifies Scone and the Upper Hunter Valley as the horse breeding capital of Australia. The Mare and Foal Sculpture was an idea conceived by a local grazier in 1979 to signify the importance of horses in the area.

The bronze sculpture was commissioned by local horse breeders, and purchased for a sum of $75,000. It was placed in Elizabeth Park as a permanent monument in March 1982, along with a time capsule containing details of donors and the history of the sculpture.

The sculpture is life sized, with a height of 1.7m, and weighs 1.4 tonnes.

We were passing through town and have been past a number of times but never stopped to take a photo as it has been difficult with the van. Today there was a perfect place for us to stop with the van so we did and took the required photo, with Mrs Shifters shoulder in the photo.
Thanks for the cache Team737.

Found on a quick stopover in Scone on our way to Armidale for the holidays. The kids have an amazing radar for playgrounds and this one had a bonus virtual cache so it was an easy decision. Too bad we were too early to duck into the visitor centre and update our cloth badge collections.

Thanks for the virtual cache.

I came here twice as a child with my dad, who worked for William Inglis & Sons, then later Winchcombe Carson and lastly Racetrack Magazine. Gunsynd was retired to a stud up this way and would be shown to the public once a year. Well, that's my 45+ years old memory. It was nice to reminisce.
