During our travels earlier this year we used numerous ferries to get to caches both vehicular (across the Murray River ) and passenger (Sydney Harbour)
The object of this cache is to get as many of the numerous ferries in Australia as possible
Please include either or both your GPSr and yourself in the photo together with the name of the ferry and where the photo was taken
We will start off with the Tailem Bend ferry (Pelican)which we caught to get to a cache 50m from the landing on the other side

Wymah Ferry. Crossing the Murray River east of Albury NSW. Ferry #421842. Part of a 24 hr free ferry service for both vehicles and pedestrians
Vehicle Ferry Wallaroo to Lucky Bay (Cowell) SA. Spencer Gulf Sea Road. Usually one trip each way per day. About a two and a half trip. Much more relaxing than travelling via Port Augusta and if you time it right not a lot of time difference
Kangaroo Island Sea Link Ferry Cape Jervis to Pennshaw SA. A 40-45 min journey. Just enough time for a coffee.
Murray River Ferry at Wellington SA. A lot of water in the river but the big flood surge was yet to arrive
Mannum SA murray River Ferry. Two ferrys at this location operating simultaneously

We have recently spent a couple of days caching on Bruny Island and to get there we had to cross the D’Entrecasteaux Channel on the ferry. This ferry caters for both passengers and vehicles, including caravans and motorhomes.
We were lucky enough to cross both ways on the new ferry. Previously there was only one ferry, the Mirambeena. It is still operational but the new ferry [the Sealink] also runs now which means less waiting time at either end. The ferries cross in the middle of the channel each trip.

Thanks.

Caught the ferry Hunter from Stockton to Queens Wharf from north to south across the Hunter River to get to the Anzac Day march in city of Newcastle. Most of the passengers were also going to the march, some with bikes. There were about 40 of us on the 08:37am ferry from Stockton wharf with 4 uniformed guys from the Air Force also going to the march.
Thanks Blingg for another opportunity to feature ferries with this locationless! Especially grateful as being from Canberra there are very limited opportunities!

The Fatman barge allows vehicles to travel from north or south across the Pieman River. It is the only cable driven vehicular barge in Tasmania.
The crossing takes about ten minutes and the carrying capacity is 6.5 tonnes, with maximum vehicle measurements of 2.46 m wheel base and 2.50 m body width. The maximum combination wheel base is 9.0 m and the minimum caravan under body clearance 0.2 m.
Beautiful view over the Pieman River. Only crossing possible. Otherwise drive via Waratah-Tullah.

This is the ferry that runs from Nelson Ba across Port Stephens to Tea Gardens. It runs basically every two hours for a 45 minute trip each way.
On the one occasion that the geo family and I went on it, it was windy and rainy which didn't make for an especially pleasant trip and left geo-wife feeling a bit queezy. Tea Gardens is a nice spot though!

Today was day fourteen of our excursion out of Tasmania touring from Melbourne to Canberra and return via Gippsland. After staying in Lakes Entrance overnight we completed some more caching in the town before going to Sale where we spent most of the day. When we came through Sale a little over a week ago, it was raining and we had little time to hunt for caches but today, the weather was fine and we had about five hours to explore this lovely area. Late in the afternoon we drove to Traralgon picking up some more caches along the way. It was a very enjoyable day.
Whilst reading some of the tourism information in one of our motels we noticed reference to the Raymond Island Ferry. We checked on line and noted that this ferry had not been logged. So today we detoured from our path and went to Paynesville were we saw the ferry crossing the 400m or so of water between Raymond Island and the town. The ferry is free to pedestrians and $10 each way for cars. During the day there are two trips each hour each way, making the maximum wait 30 minutes. Two photos have been added to the Gallery - one identifying the ferry and the other showing cars being driven off. TFTC

This is a cable ferry but each of the cables seem to be hauled independently. I suppose gives it a certain amount of steering ability since the river has been flowing swiftly everytime we have been there.

WanderingAus wandered by with the WanderingMrs (aka SWMBO) on day 138 of our annual Climatic Refugee trip. The WanderingMrs had determined through the wonders of the Information Superhighway that there was over a week of line dancing at the Wentworth Services Club, so after a couple of cold, wet and windy days in Horsham, and a night in Ouyen, we made our way to Curlwaa and booked in for five nights.
Once the line dancing competition was over the WanderingMrs was ready to head for home. After a night in Waikiri we were heading for Jamestown, and that meant crossing the mighty Murray River via the Cadell Ferry.
Over the years we've taken thde camper trailer onto plenty of ferries, including the Daintree River crossing, Spirit of Tasmania 2, , Spirit of Tasmania 3, and probably a dozen crossings of the Murray, but this cache didn't exist then. I must have had a premonition about this cache though, because on 28 June 2010 I took a photo of the Daintree River Ferry. No gpsr, no cacher, too early, so no claim for that one, so 've included it here for historical purposes.

Hi Blingg
These photographs were taken at Noosa, where the ferry crosses the Noosa River taking vehicles to the North Shore and the beach along which you can travel to Fraser Island etc.
We were off for a days surf fishing on the seventeenth of December 2005 along the beach.
I was surprised to see speed limits along the beach and two cop cars with speed traps in the dunes.
Oh, the fishing, we had more fun digging up pippis.
Some of the other sites on the beach were more entertaining too!
Wasn't geocaching back in those days but now I know what it's like, I wish I had been.
Still, we had a great day and enjoyed crossing the Noosa River twice on the ferry.
TFTC and Cheers; OldSaint.

A picture of the Peppermint Bay Ferry that takes people to the Peppermint Bay resort at Kettering and behind that the smaller Mona Ferry that takes you to the Mona Art Exhibition at Morilla Estate in Hobart. Taken at the wharf at the end of Murray St, Salamanca.
Going from the Daintree side of the Daintree River to Cape Tribulation and onwards to Cooktown driving along the road through the Heritage Listed National park you need to use this vehicle ferry. Return fare is $21.00 or $11.00 single journey. We were lucky on the 2nd of May 2011 as this was the last day of free travel put in place by the Government to encourage tourists to the area after all the rain and Cyclone Yassi. This Area had over meters of rain from December to the end of March 2011.

My dad and I did a trip up to Cape York on the Old Telegraph Track. In August 2004 we crossed the Jardine River on the Cape York Jardine River Ferry.
This photo was taken on 12th January 2011 as Brisbane was bracing itself for the worst flood we have seen in years. In the photo you can see part of the City Cat fleet. Unfortunately we won't be seeing the Cats on the river for a while as most of the ferry pontoons were damaged by the raging flood waters.
This photo was taken on 1 Dec 2009, and shows my car on the Fat Man Punt which crosses the Pieman River at Corinna in North Western Tasmania. I certainly remember this day very well, as only a short while later my car and trailer were written off in a horrible accident with a mining truck

The Comerong Island Ferry in the Shoalhaven allows residents & visitors access to the island. Non-Island residents pay $5 return.
The ferry crosses the Berry Canal which links the Shoalhaven & Crookhaven Rivers. This canal was the first canal built in Australia. An information sign nearby states: "On 21 June 1822 Alexander Berry attempted to land the dinghy from his 15 ton cutter the "Blanch" at Shoalhaven Heads. Two men drowned including Thomas Davidson, who together with Berry & Hamilton Hume had previously ascended Pigeon House Mountain.
Berry then sailed up the Crookhaven River but was stopped by a sand spit from entering the Shoalhaven River. Four days later Hamilton Hume & three others were left at the isthmus to cut a passage using only hand tools. The canal, 20 yards long, took 12 days to complete. Erosion & river flows have widened & deepened the canal & today it is the natural passage to the sea of the Shoalhaven River".
I have previously hidden a cache on the island's break wall (GA2536- Comerong).
I enjoyed a long talk with the ferry man who asked about geocaching (I have a sticker on my door). He advised there is another ferry nearby that I was unaware of so may track it down.

There are generally faster ways to get from one side to the other, but if the timing is right, it's well worth the trip - which is free.
