Description
An impressive bronze sundial in the herb garden
This fine armillary sphere sundial is to be found in the herb garden in Sydney's botanical gardens. It was made in 1993 by Sundials Australia, cast out of silicone bronze. It stands 2.4m high and weighs in at 1.5 tonnes.
In this type of sundial, the rod that casts the shadow (the gnomon) is in line with the earth's rotational axis. The sundial can be read on a sunny day and has a correction chart for the time of year.
In order to claim this cache you are required to:
1. Include a photo of yourself or your GPS with the sundial when you post your log, and
2. email us with the answer to this question: What is the parrot eating, and why?

Down in Sydney City to see the Phantom of the Opera for our 10th anniversary, culminating in an afternoon stroll through the Botanic Gardens, and we (mostly Dad) couldn't resist the urge to grab some virtual caches on the way.
An interesting Sundial, which we took a circuitous route to find. Everytime we looked for a sign to a toilet it was in a different direction with a different distance, so that was fun!
Thanks for the virtual cache.

Thanks for the virtual cache.
Took a while to find the blasted parrot, but this is certainly an impressive object. Couldn't test out it's accuracy today due to the showers and clouds that were around but I will trust it works. Thanks glenferns.
This is the best example of an armillary sphere sundial that I have seen. And the time displayed was spot on!
I stopped here today as this was one of the locations for the GC Botanic Gardens virtual.

A nice walk with the Family and JakeAthol plus Betty in the botanical gardens. Ended up going over to the opera house and did all kinds of caches on the way. THanks for putting the cache out Glenferns.
I had a few hours to spare this morning before catching a train to visit 2 of my daughters in The Gong. Got up early to get more caching in.
When I arrived here I hadn't read the requirements for logging this cache and got 'lost' admiring it and it's decorations. Strawberries - Yum! I noticed the parrot and thought it was an odd addition compared to the rest. Then I read the requirements. Ohhhhhhh. I see. haha

Accidental find! I walked thirty the gardens, came here and thought from "hey wasn't there a sundial virtual here? Yes it was. Photo attached.
The Queens birthday weekend had been set aside for a work trip to Sydney. Free time meant geocaching time. With lots of virtual geocaches around the city I decided that would be a good way to spend my time. At each GZ there were plenty of muggles to content with but as most were tourists taking photos I blended in.
Found the answers eventually after a couple of laps and help from google. Email sent to CO. TFTC

Thanks for bringing me here. found with alnic & lachnic on a day caching around the city and the harbour. The sundial was accurate at the time when we arrived as the adjustment was supposed to be less than 5 minutes

Thanks for another interesting virtual glenferns. Took me a little while to locate the parrot but quickly worked what I think is the correct answer once I did find it. Nicely constructed 'puzzle' there. Definitely worth a 'Top cache' rating.

Wow, that is certainly a very cool sundial. Sadly my wife loved the decoration so much, that now she wants one for our tiny garden! Loved the question about the parrot, had a laugh when the penny dropped.
Thanks glenferns!

#GA153 - 07:55; Decided to head out for a morning stroll through the Botanical Gardens while the geohoney prepared for the day ahead and eventually the journey home. By this stage I'd already collected a couple of virtuals, including another in this series. This one too was quite interesting and I enjoyed gathering the required information and learning a little more on the way. Information sorted, I was off on my way again to the next cache. Found on a short weekend trip to Sydney, to watch "The Music of Queen" at the Opera House. There was a wedding right near GZ, so we had to answer the question quickly and we had to take just a quick photo. Cool sundial - never seen any sundial as big as this. Email sent. TFTC!

Couldn't find the parrot but through some other information nearby worked out the answer and sent it in. Lovely peaceful afternoon in the city caching and munzing. Discovering a few pockets of the Gardens I hadn't seen before. Cheers!

Had a great walk through the botanical gardens today, together with the kids. They loved searching for all the statues! Makes a visit so much more fun. I use to have a sundial in the garden, but defenitely not this size!

Found on a pleasant stroll through Sydney before heading off to Macquarie University for work for the following day.
Had a bit of trouble with this one, trying not to get in the way of the gardeners doing their thing. Very interesting sundial though, will have to go back and have a closer look at it one day.
Thanks.
Thanks.

No sun to test the time keeping qualities of this monster piece of functional art, but we enjoyed visiting here anyway. Thanks glenferns for the cache.

Sadly it was too cloudy for the sundial to tell us anything time related while we were there today, but it was still interesting to see.
Thanks for a reason to visit the Botanical Gardens today.
Pic and emil done as needed.

Woo hoo my first GCA FTF!!!! In between meetings today I made a quick dash up the road to the Botanical gardens to claim the rest of the Glenferns "Curiosity" series. Quite a joy to find these and very relaxing to wander the gardens.
