Description

Sydney's own little version of the Trevi Fountain

This fountain is tucked away in the south west corner of the Botanical Gardens. It was erected in 1897 in honour of Governor Phillip and is the only large neo-classical fountain in Sydney.

The fountain took seven years to craft from marble and bronze. It is a strange juxtaposition of classical mythological figures and Australian icons such as sheep, waratahs and aboriginal figures.

To claim this cache you must do two things:

1. Include a photo of yourself or your GPS with the fountain and

2. Send us an email with the answer the question: What is the aboriginal man below Cyclops holding?

Down in Sydney City to see the Phantom of the Opera for our 10th anniversary and we (mostly Dad) couldn't resist the urge to grab some virtual caches on the way.

We ended the day with a lovely walk through the Botanical Gardens, checking out some of the features as we wandered north.

Found this interesting sculpture fairly quickly Plenty of naked bottoms around here which the kids will be amused by.

Thanks for the virtual cache.

Watawieh from Norfolk Island, South Pacific.

I did not expect to be in Sydney this week, but here I am and with some spare time to find GCA caches

Hiding behind netting today as it seems to be under restoration which made getting the answer to the question a bit tricky, but with a phone shot over the top I managed to see what I needed. A nice walk today around the Botanic Gardens, thanks glenferns.

I had a few hours to spare this morning before catching a train to visit 2 of my daughters in The Gong. Got up early to get more caching in.

What a great morning I had exploring a couple of parks and their monuments/memorials thanks to geocaching. This is why I love geocaching - the places and things you discover. Okay, so I love finding treasure too. haha.

Thanks for the series of virtuals here. Maybe the missing one or more will be available next time I visit - I need to because I just didn't have enough time to enjoy the parks properly or even see more than a third of this one. Smile

27C in the middle of winter, lovely day for a walk before my afternoon gig in the Merc.
I have sent the answers to the CO. Cyclops has too many eyes Wink

The Queens birthday weekend had been set aside for a work trip to Sydney. Free time meant geocaching time. With lots of virtual geocaches around the city I decided that would be a good way to spend my time. At each GZ there were plenty of muggles to content with but as most were tourists taking photos I blended in.
Stopping hat this beautiful fountain I gathered up mu answers but struggled with one. Once I found the word I kicked myself! Email sent to CO. TFTC

I was looking for a cache which had not been found for the last six months and this one was closest.
I didn't know this fountain to be here, it's a magnificent one! Sat next to it for a while, then walked back to the office.

Answer to the question send, however CO has been inactive for a while so I log it now.

Last virtual for the day. Took a lap and a half around the fountain before I found Cyclops (I was looking at the number of eyes, not the name) so I could get the answer to this cache. Just as impressive as the Archibald Fountain in Hyde park, but in a different way.

#GA151 - 07:35; Decided to head out for a morning stroll through the Botanical Gardens while the geohoney prepared for the day ahead and eventually the journey home. This interesting fountain was my first stop on the morning walk. I admired the craftsmanship and examined the details, then after double checking that I had all of the information I required, I was off to the next pitstop. TFTC glenferns Very Happy

Found on a short weekend trip to Sydney, to watch "The Music of Queen" at the Opera House. Email sent. Last of your caches today, and it was probably the best one. Such a cool and old fashioned monument - with some good artwork. Nicely done. TFTC!

I have been meaning to get here and log the rest of these caches since completing my 1001 day geo-streak back in Feb. Had been saving them for a rainy day. Ironically it has just cleared up for the first time in a week!

Cheers!

Nice big fountain that most people probably just do not take the time to look at closely enough. Great Roman architecture embedded with Australiana.

I had a brief work trip to Chifley Square today and had to park up on Macquarie Street. After the meeting I still had 20 minutes left on the parking so thought I might as well grab a few nearby virtuals.

Emailed the answers off to the owner. Thanks glenferns.

This one was my boys' favourite of the day.

Lived here a long time and never visited this fountain - thanks for bringing me here.

My last virtual for the afternoon before heading off frogging! I'm amazed at how long it took to make this fountain!!!! My goodness. These days, it takes that time to build a railway line or road (and we complain that it's way too long)

Found on the way back to the car park from a morning meeting.
Another interesting cache in this fascinating series.

Haven't been here before, so was a real treat. The junior team members were responsible for finding the requirements for this one. Thanks glenferns for the cache

While in town for a break, I snapped a pic of a few trig caches as well as heading to the Botanical Gardens for this interesting series of virtuals.
This was an odd fountain, eg - the cyclops had an eye in th forehead I thought - but this statue does not...
anyway, email and pic done as reqd.
Thanks for a good reason to wander around the Botanic Gardens.
