Description

Volcanic activity has been the main determinant of the current landscape of North-West Tasmania. Weathering of the numerous lava flows has resulted in both the rich red soils so important to the agricultural industry and very prominent landforms.

Created From Chaos Geological Trail was a project implemented to highlight the impact of volcanic activity on the landscape of the North-West Coast. Sponsored by Rotary Clubs from the North-West Coast and the Government of Tasmania as part of the Bicentenary of Tasmania Celebrations in 2004, a number of information plaques were installed at locations of significant volcanic activity.

This series of caches takes you to some of these locations so that you may view the features, learn a little about the geological activity which led to their formation and gain an understanding of the significance of volcanic activity in the formation of the landscape of the North-West Coast.

At each of the locations you will be required to

  • collect information to answer one or more questions
  • take a photograph of the area including a prominent volcanic feature in the area (do not show the information plaque)
  • email your answers to the questions to the cache owner

Do not log your find until approval is received.

Once approval has been received

  • submit your "Found" log (but do not include answers to questions)
  • upload your photo to the Gallery

Found logs which are not accompanied by a photo within two weeks will be deleted.

Sulphur Creek Point

Sulphur Creek is reputedly named because of the perceived smell of sulphur in the area when first explored by Europeans. Sulphur is associated with volcanic activity. This site is very interesting in that it contains rocks from the geological period just prior to, and the geological period following the most violent period of volcanic activity when chains of volcanoes formed across Tasmania.

1. In geological terms, what is an "unconformity"?

2. Name the geological periods represented by the rocks on either side of the unconformity.

3. What have rocks from this area being used for?

Please use the following link to email your answers to the questions to Created From Chaos. Remember to wait until approval is given before logging your find and uploading your photo.

A starting point for further information about the geology of Tasmania is available from the fact sheet Formation of Tasmania produced by the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service.

An interesting geological feature. After gathering the required information we walked around the point to check out the unconformity. A beautiful spot and a glorious day, although the weather soon turned! TFTC!

Hooray, just received notification that we have passed "Created from Chaos-Sulphur Creek Point" 101, so logging now. We collected all the relevant material back in mid October whilst visiting the area for other caches. Through my'old'workmate in Ulverstone I have also been lucky enough to peruse a text called "Created from Chaos" which I would dearly love to get my hands on a copy.
Anyway, very pleased to have been enticed to visit this area of Sulphur Ck. and discover stuff which was previously unknown to me.
Thanks to 2y'stassies for going to the trouble of creating this GCA Virtual. Clapping

On Sunday we went to cradle mountain to do some cache hunting and some snow hunting, we decided to come back via the Murchison highway to wynyard to so that we could collect a few more caches on the way back to penguin, after collecting 1 at wynyard and 1 at burnie and a did not find at Blythe Beach, we travelled on to this cache at Sulphur Creek point. we stopped in the car park and had a walk around this area out to the point to have a good look at the area. While there we collected the information off the board and took the required photo. Emailed our answers to the cache owner and got their approval back to make this log. this was an interesting bit of information that we didn't really know about this area. TFTC Clan Cerberus

Travelling around Australia and spending a few months in Tasmania.

Today we had a casual start to the day. After lunch we headed over to Ulverstone to do some shopping but of course we found a few caches along the way!

Such a lovely coast line.

Logging with permission.

There were lots of grey nomads about today, but good thing that this was a virtual - no need for stealth ! Cool
The unconformity was difficult to pick with the low sun but a red tag was certainly an unconformity among the nomads ! Wink
Thanks for the cache, 2y'stassies ! Very Happy

On a recent trip to the coast we targeted this series of caches.

The weather was perfect and we thoroughly enjoyed learning about and following the Created From Chaos Geological Trail.

While we have visited each site previously we have never stopped and read the signs. Thanks 2y'stassies for giving us a reason to stop and enjoy the wonders of nature and for a fantastic series.

We appreciate the time and effort gone into creating this series of caches and the prompt response to our emails.

Hi

Found this cache while traveling up to the north west. An enjoyable day.

Logged with permission of owner

Lovely spot to stop and view the coast line and some interesting information. Well worth the stop.

Last time I was here I managed to dent my car running into a fixed structure in the car park

A quick stop on the way home to check out this one. Looks like it's going to be the overnight spot for quite a few campers. Fascinating geological history here. Thanks, we're learning quite a bit from this series.

Thanks 2 y'stassies for another great instalment in the Created From Chaos series. Mrs Fi was particularly interested in finding the line where the two different types of rock plates met. While Ni was again on the hunt for red jasper.

I wouldn't mind coming back to this area, now that I've studied and passed the test, I know better what to look for! I THINK my photo gets the right part in! I parked so that Mum could watch the approaching train pass by while she munched on fish and chips, and I ran down to the point to grab a photo. Nice spot, there used to be a cache not far from the information board here too, but that seems like a long time ago. It's a lovely spot for the campers.

Stopping now along the coast to read these information boards. Thanks for making us stop. Permission to log received. TFTV.

This is one sign we had to go and look for. It's amazing the things we've learned from caching. And our kids think it's a silly hobby.

Received the ok to log. TFTC
