Description

Volcanic activity has been the main determinant of the current landscape of North-West Tasmania. Weathering of the numerous lava flows has resulted in both the rich red soils so important to the agricultural industry and very prominent landforms.

Created From Chaos Geological Trail was a project implemented to highlight the impact of volcanic activity on the landscape of the North-West Coast. Sponsored by Rotary Clubs from the North-West Coast and the Government of Tasmania as part of the Bicentenary of Tasmania Celebrations in 2004, a number of information plaques were installed at locations of significant volcanic activity.

This series of caches takes you to some of these locations so that you may view the features, learn a little about the geological activity which led to their formation and gain an understanding of the significance of volcanic activity in the formation of the landscape of the North-West Coast.

At each of the locations you will be required to

  • collect information to answer one or more questions
  • take a photograph of the area including a prominent volcanic feature in the area (do not show the information plaque)
  • email your answers to the questions to the cache owner

Do not log your find until approval is received.

Once approval has been received

  • submit your "Found" log (but do not include answers to questions)
  • upload your photo to the Gallery

Found logs which are not accompanied by a photo within two weeks will be deleted.

Penguin Silver Mine

Volcanic activity resulted in magma coming to the surface. The resultant lava contained many minerals some of which were in sufficient concentration to be mined.

1. In what year was the first silver mine in Tasmania established?

2. List five (5) metals other than silver which were found at this location.

3. In what geological period were lead and copper deposited in the rocks where the Neptune Mine was established?

Please use the following link to email your answers to the questions to Created From Chaos. Remember to wait until approval is given before logging your find and uploading your photo.

A starting point for further information about the geology of Tasmania is available from the fact sheet Formation of Tasmania produced by the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service.

It would be so easy never to know about these areas of interesting history without a virtual or earth cache bringing us there and drawing our attention to it.

I was driving past and saw the Created from Chaos info board so I turned around as I knew there would be a geocache here. Last week I completed another " created from Chaos " cache. Given permission by CO to log. Thanks for your prompt reply

Working up in the area and I spotted this one which was funny since I had only just done another of CFC's in Burnie a couple of weeks ago. For once the sun was out for me and I was happy to collect the needed information without getting wet, I couldnt see much since of the mine but was very interested in the facts.

Thanks for teaching me something and for the great views.

There appears to be very little evidence that a mine was ever here, and a seemingly odd place for one too, by the sea Surprised
Thanks for the cache and history lessons, 2y'stassies ! Very Happy

After a coupe of days in Burnie we were off to Launceston. We made the diversion via the coast road (again)to continue on the Created from Chaos series. We nearly drive past here as the sign is hard to see heading east. Information collected, popped down on to the rocks for another cache then on the road again. TFTC

#GA285 - 15:55; I was out on the north west coast on a Great Aussie Icon Hunt (#5.6) and after a bite of lunch decided to collect a few of the local caches while I was here. Grabbed a trig and nearby GC cache before heading on to a GCA traditional and on the way back to the geomobile found I was parked in just the right spot to gather the required information for this virtual. Hard to believe that this cache has been unloved for coming on 2 years! Logged with CO OK. TFTC 2y'stassies Very Happy

On a recent trip to the coast we targeted this series of caches.

The weather was perfect and we thoroughly enjoyed learning about and following the Created From Chaos Geological Trail.

While we have visited each site previously we have never stopped and read the signs. Thanks 2y'stassies for giving us a reason to stop and enjoy the wonders of nature and for a fantastic series.

We appreciate the time and effort gone into creating this series of caches and the prompt response to our emails.

Hi 2y's
Permission granted from the CO to log this cache. Thanks for the prompt reply, it's really appreciated.
Just as an aside, you may be interested to know that I played football on the Penguin Ground for Devonport against Penguin [obviously] back in the days of the NWFU. [Yes, that's a long time ago - quiet please! That's why it's "OLD"Saint] and on that particular day and in that particular game; I kicked a third of Devonport's goals - we got three goals for the day and one hell of a belting! I was also given one of the best "coat hangers" I've ever received in a football match here!
This area (around GZ) is so pretty. Love it!!
TFTC and cheers
OldSaint.

Our 5th find in this series. I think we may have to plan another trip to complete the rest, which is great since we really enjoy this area. Thanks again 2y'stassies for organising the series. We also now have a car full of rocks thanks to enthusiastic geokidis Smile

Had known about the history of this place, since doing hookline's Silver Penguin cache here, two or three years ago. Still I am unsure of the actual site of the mine. The picture on the board seems to indicate way down near the water's edge, but there is a definite crater closer to the train lines which I suspect is the location. Thanks for another interesting cache.

Learning as we travel along the coast. Didn't know there had ever been a silver mine at Penguin. TFTV. Permission to log received.

Until we read the sign we had no idea there had been a silver mine at Penguin. Something else we've learned from caching.

Logged with permission.
