Description

Volcanic activity has been the main determinant of the current landscape of North-West Tasmania. Weathering of the numerous lava flows has resulted in both the rich red soils so important to the agricultural industry and very prominent landforms.

Created From Chaos Geological Trail was a project implemented to highlight the impact of volcanic activity on the landscape of the North-West Coast. Sponsored by Rotary Clubs from the North-West Coast and the Government of Tasmania as part of the Bicentenary of Tasmania Celebrations in 2004, a number of information plaques were installed at locations of significant volcanic activity.

This series of caches takes you to some of these locations so that you may view the features, learn a little about the geological activity which led to their formation and gain an understanding of the significance of volcanic activity in the formation of the landscape of the North-West Coast.

At each of the locations you will be required to

  • collect information to answer one or more questions
  • take a photograph of the area including a prominent volcanic feature in the area (do not show the information plaque)
  • email your answers to the questions to the cache owner

Do not log your find until approval is received.

Once approval has been received

  • submit your "Found" log (but do not include answers to questions)
  • upload your photo to the Gallery

Found logs which are not accompanied by a photo within two weeks will be deleted.

Basalt Columns, Burnie

The very distinctive basalt columns have been known and recorded since European settlement at Emu Bay. A great deal of controversy was created when plans were submitted for the nearby apartments as the original design both destroyed and covered much of this unique geology. The compromise was considerable redesign of the foundations of the apartment block so that the basalt columns remained visible and largely untouched.

1. In what type of basalt is the geometric columnar jointing?

2. What type of symmetry is shown by the basalt columns?

3. What object distorted the lava flow as it extruded from a nearby fault?

Please use the following link to email your answers to the questions to Created From Chaos. Remember to wait until approval is given before logging your find and uploading your photo.

A starting point for further information about the geology of Tasmania is available from the fact sheet Formation of Tasmania produced by the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service.

Need to spend the next 6 weeks going to and fro to the NWGH, so for a bit of variety we are engaging in a bit of caching in the area at least once a week. Completed and details sent to the two wise ones. There's a bit going on in this area, so thankyou for another one to brighten the day.

I needed to go on a plastic hunt this weekend for a change of scenery and and some exercise and this cache was on the list of to do. I have never been to or even heard of this interesting area so put it down to one of the advantages / pleasures of geocaching. This is one of what I hope will be several finds today. Thank you 2y'stassies for the cache which brought me here. Logged with permission of the C.O. Very Happy

On Sunday we went to cradle mountain to do some cache hunting and some snow hunting, we decided to come back via the Murchison highway to wynyard to so that we could collect a few more caches on the way back to penguin, after collecting 1 at wynyard we travelled on to this cache in burnie, we stopped in the car park and had a walk around this great area to stretch our legs, while there we collected the information off the board and took the required photo. Emailed our answers to the cache owner and got their approval back to make this log. this was an interesting bit of information that we didn't really know about this area. TFTC Clan Cerberus

A cold day in Burnie, my hometown. I was surprised how lovely the gardens were around the area, it certainly has been well developed since I last visited this area.

Another good "earthcache" and quite an impressive feature to incorporate into the building and landscape design.

Our thanks, once again, to 2y'stassies

Logged with approval, thanks for the cache

I was up this way for work and noticed this cache not far from my hotel, having been up here a few years ago I looked at the same feature when I was looking round the area so I was happy to return today to get this cache.

Its a great bit of geology and after looking over it once more I noted down the needed details to log this cache.

Thanks for another great log.

Our third CFC visit today, & unfortunately the final for this trip though we'll most certainly return to complete this great series. We loved the education & all the wonderful geology on display & this spot was certainly no exception. More pink tinges in our photos I'm afraid so they don't do justice to reality. Thanks for this series 2y'stassies & the quick OK to log.

We enjoyed our visit to this site (yes despite the weather). It has been quite a few years since we have been to Burnie and this corner of the city has had some big changes. They have made a nice garden/park area. TFTC

On a recent trip to the coast we targeted this series of caches.

The weather was perfect and we thoroughly enjoyed learning about and following the Created From Chaos Geological Trail.

While we have visited each site previously we have never stopped and read the signs. Thanks 2y'stassies for giving us a reason to stop and enjoy the wonders of nature and for a fantastic series.

We appreciate the time and effort gone into creating this series of caches and the prompt response to our emails.

This was our favourite site very impressive formations.

Hi 2y's
I love the way the building here has been perched on these rocks. The water feature is fascinating. A great virtual.
"Logged" this cache at 2015hrs before having a nourishing dinner at KFC which I think is created from chaos too!
This cache completes this series for me - enjoyed doing it - thanks.
TFTC, TFTS and the info gained.
Cheers OldSaint.

Another great cache in the created from chaos series. Without being overly geologically knowledgeable, I'd say this would have to be one of the most interesting rock formations I've seen. Thanks 2y'stassies.

Thanks 2 y'stassies for another great instalment in the Created From Chaos series. We were surprised that the hotel/apartment building was allowed to be built on such an interesting geological feature. We also had fun watching the containers being maneuvered around the nearby shipyard.

We must confess to having seen these information signs in several locations but never stopping to actually read them. So now we have a really good reason! Very Happy

mr sharnie's tribe would love to live in one of the apartments built above these columns and watch the activity at the port across the road. It's a shame the columns were damaged in the building process though.

Received permission from the CO to log our find. TFTC
