Description

Volcanic activity has been the main determinant of the current landscape of North-West Tasmania. Weathering of the numerous lava flows has resulted in both the rich red soils so important to the agricultural industry and very prominent landforms.

Created From Chaos Geological Trail was a project implemented to highlight the impact of volcanic activity on the landscape of the North-West Coast. Sponsored by Rotary Clubs from the North-West Coast and the Government of Tasmania as part of the Bicentenary of Tasmania Celebrations in 2004, a number of information plaques were installed at locations of significant volcanic activity.

This series of caches takes you to some of these locations so that you may view the features, learn a little about the geological activity which led to their formation and gain an understanding of the significance of volcanic activity in the formation of the landscape of the North-West Coast.

At each of the locations you will be required to

  • collect information to answer one or more questions
  • take a photograph of the area including a prominent volcanic feature in the area (do not show the information plaque)
  • email your answers to the questions to the cache owner

Do not log your find until approval is received.

Once approval has been received

  • submit your "Found" log (but do not include answers to questions)
  • upload your photo to the Gallery

Found logs which are not accompanied by a photo within two weeks will be deleted.

Braddons Lookout

Braddons Lookout provides an excellent view over an area which laregly avoided direct volcanic activity.

1. Old sea levels neat Turners Beach residences are visible from Braddons Lookout. How old are the old sea levels created in the deglaciation period?

2. What rare feature is believed to be reworked glacial deposits?

3. The Dial Range is a barrier of which two rock types?

Please use the following link to email your answers to the questions to Created From Chaos. Remember to wait until approval is given before logging your find and uploading your photo.

A starting point for further information about the geology of Tasmania is available from the fact sheet Formation of Tasmania produced by the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service.

Thank you 2y'stassies for this cache. I have been here only once before looking for a GC cache and enjoyed the view but also read the historical information. On that occasion I overlooked the sign to which this cache directed my attention so more local history was learnt. A bittery cold wind was blowing so I did not stay long.

TFTC 2y'stassies,
I always enjoy the great views from up here, in fact my relatives owned a farm just below and a bit south of GZ.
These are great info boards too, with enough info to make an enjoyable and informative read, but not so long that interest is lost.
We had just meet Mr CO (again) just down the road on a futile chase of cows with guns.
Found with AlbyDangles on day Five of the 'Bust' leg of our "Kempsey or Bust" tour.
Cheers, EPs.

"Hello 2y'stassies thank you for the cache.

What a lovely spot to enjoy the views over Forth.
Thanks for bringing me here.

Today was the fifth day of a road trip with EeePees and a nice sunny day it was.

Have driven past here many times and never stopped so decided it was time to stop, i thought id check if there was a GCA to do and what to do you know? Took a while to find the correct sign with the info as all the bew beautiful signs and info are distracting and this poor little old sign is a bit hidden if there are a few cars parjed around here. Successful in the end. Tftc

Not a lot of "finds" in recent times. Given approval from CO to log. My second "created from chaos" virtual but I am keen to get them all. Great views today from the lookout

Continued around to grab the info on this one as well. we were met with a full house (or rather a full lookout) of muggles. The boy and I just slotted in between them and wandered around the plaques at the lookout. It wasn't long until they left. Then it was down to business. TFTC

A very commanding view from up here, and the viewing area reminds you of a flight deck from a space ship ! Cool
Thanks for the cache, 2y'stassies ! Very Happy

The first find for us in the Created From Chaos series. We loved it up here, it was so peaceful and sunny with great views. We read with interest the plaques at the lookout referring to some 'egg' ancestry (James Fenton and James 'Philosopher' Smith). Her grandmother was a Fenton. This was our morning tea stop that also had a GC cache and 2 movables (which we didn't move). TFTC

On a recent trip to the coast we targeted this series of caches.

The weather was perfect and we thoroughly enjoyed learning about and following the Created From Chaos Geological Trail.

While we have visited each site previously we have never stopped and read the signs. Thanks 2y'stassies for giving us a reason to stop and enjoy the wonders of nature and for a fantastic series.

We appreciate the time and effort gone into creating this series of caches and the prompt response to our emails.

Lovely spot to stop and view the coast line and some interesting information. Well worth the stop.

Hi 2y's
Doing this series has taken me back to my Matric days and the geological excursions I had with Roy Pallet. Some of the information gleaned in those classes is returning as I continue on to the last in this series.
"Logged" this cache at 2035hrs; which is a great time to visit this scenic spot.
TFTC and cheers
OldSaint.

Another very interesting geological feature that I hadn't read before. I'll certainly look at the area a bit differently now. TFTC 2y'stassies...Cheers.

Received permission to log this find. Yet another info sign we knew existed. We found a tiny magnetic gnome attached to it once, but didn't read the information. I guess we were focussed on other things that day. Shame on us!

Mum and I were on our way to Devonport so we took the opportunity to drive up and have a quick look at the view, which is spectacular. So far, these created from chaos caches have been excellent. There's no case of information overload - just enough to go, "wow - I didn't know that, I will look at that formation with different eyes now". Thank you and I hope my note to you wasn't a case of "too much information!" Thanks again.
