Description

Volcanic activity has been the main determinant of the current landscape of North-West Tasmania. Weathering of the numerous lava flows has resulted in both the rich red soils so important to the agricultural industry and very prominent landforms.

Created From Chaos Geological Trail was a project implemented to highlight the impact of volcanic activity on the landscape of the North-West Coast. Sponsored by Rotary Clubs from the North-West Coast and the Government of Tasmania as part of the Bicentenary of Tasmania Celebrations in 2004, a number of information plaques were installed at locations of significant volcanic activity.

This series of caches takes you to some of these locations so that you may view the features, learn a little about the geological activity which led to their formation and gain an understanding of the significance of volcanic activity in the formation of the landscape of the North-West Coast.

At each of the locations you will be required to

  • collect information to answer one or more questions
  • take a photograph of the area including a prominent volcanic feature in the area (do not show the information plaque)
  • email your answers to the questions to the cache owner

Do not log your find until approval is received.

Once approval has been received

  • submit your "Found" log (but do not include answers to questions)
  • upload your photo to the Gallery

Found logs which are not accompanied by a photo within two weeks will be deleted.

Mersey Bluff Area

The Mersey Bluff headland, with it's lighthouse, is an icon of the Devonport Area. It's origins are volcanic as are many other prominent features along the coastline.

1. Of what geological age is the headland of dolerite volcanic rock?

2. By what volcanic activity was the headland formed?

3. What two purposes are listed for the flat surfaces created by erosion of some of the dolerite joints?

Please use the following link to email your answers to the questions to Created From Chaos. Remember to wait until approval is given before logging your find and uploading your photo.

A starting point for further information about the geology of Tasmania is available from the fact sheet Formation of Tasmania produced by the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service.

After visiting today, we can confirm that the information board on which this cache is based has been removed. Alas, the cache must go too. Thanks to those who logged a find on the cache.

No more boards. They've been removed.

Mmmmm, visited with RLD4963 but found no information boards. Having completed another 'Created from Chaos' virtual cache in Burnie, we were expecting to find some similar style info boards, but we found nothing unfortunately. Scoured the whole area. Maybe they are being replaced. Sad

Good to come back to take another look at the lighthouse - one of my favourite.
Also virtual cache.

Although we were staying in Port Sorell, we spent more time in the Devonport area and managed to find a few good caches along the way.
Mersey Bluff is a great sport for GCA caches, five within 50 metres of the lighthouse. We managed to find all five and, after submitting our answers for approval, are able to log this one as a find.

Thanks for the GCA equivalent of an Earthcache.

Logging with permission. I enjoyed visiting this area, with the lighthouse, Aboriginal marks on the rocks and geological history. TFTC 2y'stassies.

Out the door an hour before breakfast just so I could at long last grab caches, trigs, waymarks and a trad that I had missed doing in the past, this one was a quick job getting the needed information and take in the views along the way.

Thanks for the cache.

I wouldn't have known about the rock features of this cache hadn't drawn my attention to it. The lighthouse provided a great backdrop for photos with the kids.
Thanks 2y'stassies for the virtual here today.

Back to the caching mecca of Mersey Bluff. Thanks for a wonderful series that kept us interested all they way along the coast. Apologies for the lack of prominent volcanic feature in the photo, the kids wanted the lighthouse. TFTC

#GA290 - 17:45; I was out on the north west coast on a Great Aussie Icon Hunt (#5.6) and after a bite of lunch in Penguin, collected a few caches in that area before the geohoney and I headed for home. Dropped by Mersey Bluff to take in the sights and perhaps grab another cache or two. Turned out to be caching Nirvana with three trigs and a number of other caches all accessible at the one stop Dancing I'd grabbed another in this series at Penguin, where, yet again, I'd 'virtually' parked at GZ for another cache Whistle Logged with CO OK. TFTC 2y'stassies Dancing

Zal and I spent 10 days touring Tasmania and it was the most amazing trip ever! We got engaged at Cradle Mountain and saw so many wonderful things. Even the weather played nice most of the time Razz Thanks for the hunt, it is always tricky logging lots of holiday finds so apologies for the cut'n'paste log, Zal included more details Wink

Permission granted so logging away a windy but scenic virtual cache! Lots of caching action in the area with trigs, a Earth Cache, GCA trad and this. Top spot for a quick reccy in Devonport on our way through to Cradle Mountain today. Cheers from Sydney!

I arrived to the area at sunset, which was purely by chance, and it was a particularly nice one. There were a few other people there readying themselves to photograph the lighthouse at the nicest moment, and it seems there was almost an unsaid "go" as they clicked away for a minute, then just as suddenly stopped as the sun dropped that little bit further. I got the answers and took a few photos then headed off for Hobart. Was pleased to get the OK to log tonight and a very speedy reply too. I've enjoyed the Created from Chaos series very much. Thanks 2y'stassies.

On a recent trip to the coast we targeted this series of caches.

The weather was perfect and we thoroughly enjoyed learning about and following the Created From Chaos Geological Trail.

While we have visited each site previously we have never stopped and read the signs. Thanks 2y'stassies for giving us a reason to stop and enjoy the wonders of nature and for a fantastic series.

We appreciate the time and effort gone into creating this series of caches and the prompt response to our emails.

Ah made it Very Happy Would like to say a big thanks to 2y'stassies on a terrific virtual cache series that was thoroughly enjoyable and informative. We have previously been to all of these places and remarked on the formations but have never taken the time to read the information.

And last but not least, thank you for the quick response to the emails.

We had a great day caching in the Devonport region. Thankyou 2y'stassies for such an enjoyable and educational virtual. We are making the kids work out the answers, so hopefully they are learning something about the region and how this coastline was formed.
