Description

One of a series of virtual cache visits to the centre of Australia, its states and mainland territories.

The thing I really like about the Geocaching Australia site is that it allows 'unusual' caches that aren't permitted on the International site.  A recent GCA find that had me confused for a while got me thinking about a series that gets to the heart of our great nation and brings a smile(y) to those who find it.

The rules of the caches in this series are simple  find the cache, log your find.  That's it.

So, let's go.

Centre of Tasmania

According to the Geoscience Australia website, one possible centre for Tasmania is found on the western shore of Little Pine Lagoon. This small lake lies next to the Marlborough Highway, between the towns of Bronte and Miena. On the Lyell Highway, just a short distance east of Bronte, lies a cairn that was erected in 1983 by members of the Institution of Surveyors (Australian Tasmanian Division). This marker commemorates the early surveyors who explored and mapped the state, and marks Trig Point 715  said to be near the geographical centre.

The Google Maps view of the centre of Tasmania looks something like this:

The centre of Tasmania

Position on Tasmania South East 1:250 000 and 8214 Meander 1:100 000 scale maps.

If you decide to journey to any of the locations in this series, please remember:

  • Travel in outback Australia can be extremely hazardous. Plan your trip with care and seek and follow local advice on what precautions to take.
  • Be aware of private property restrictions — 'private' means exactly that!
  • Do not risk your life to log a find on any of the caches in this series.

I've been closer than some and further than others but thanks for the virtual visit to this beautiful state. I do love Tassie. Good to know where this centre is. Clapping

This is a fun little aspirational series. We will add these to the list of places to attempt to visit in the future, although a few will be pretty difficult.

Love to get down to Tassie again. Looks like you could almost walk straight to this one.

I walked near here back in the day when i lived near the great western tiers.
I have found the belly button cache way back in 2007 as well. Thanks eludes this virtual tour.

I am fascinated by this virtual tour. Enjoy visiting Tasmania at any time. This is by far the easiest - thanks EuDes ClappingClapping

Looking through caches that I could possibly find without leaving the comfort of my own home and these popped up. It was great fun visiting the centers Australia. I hope this is a correct way of logging these caches (Virtually visiting). If you are not happy with this method of logging, please let me know so I delete my logs. TFTC's Very Happy

Like all others have driven past here many times, unsure of what to was the go was with this cache appears to be in the water, we read everyones logs and seen that we could log it just like everyone else. TFTV Very Happy

We noticed this virtual whilst driving past nearby. After reading all the logs and noticing the D/T rating the penny dropped! TFTC!

Checking out other caches in the area, came across this one, We have just logged it like everyone has done, as it seems to be the way to go. TFTC Very Happy

Can't understand the reasoning behind the cache. The location is in a lake so you can't walk to it. Driven past here many times....tftc...cheers ST.

Stumbled upon this cache when I was sick and alone at home. At least I can do some caching on a winters day when I am unwell. TFTC

Hello EuDes thanks for the cache.

I had intended to walk to the location and see what was there some time ago but as time goes by and still sitting at home I realise that's not going to happen soon so as others have done I just log a find.

This one popped up on our GPS as we were driving past - a kilometre away guess thats as close as we will ever get.

29-Dec-15
We decided on a family drive in perfect weather. Leaving around 0930, we went up through the midlands and turned off at Oatlands (we chose this road rather than the one at Tunbridge because the egg had not driven this road before) to head through to Interlaken, then onto Great Lake and Miena, continuing on the Marlborough Road to Bronte Park and then home via Tarraleah followed by a well earned pub meal at Ouse. We arrived home at 2215 after a wonderful day.
Unsure exactly what we were meant to do here, we read other logs and realize we can just log it. We took a photo on the road as close as we could get without going bush. We have found most of the other caches around here so will add this to our finds. TFTC

As it is a long weekend here in Tassie for the northern part of the state we decided to head off with some muggle friends to explore the central highlands area before continuing on down to Bronte Park and then through to the West Coast. Came across this one in our search for caches to do along the way. Don't really understand the principle behind this one but we were in the area and as you apparently don't have to go to the exact location we will claim it as a find. Might have to do some research in to the related caches in this series soon. Thanks.

We visited this area a few weeks ago and it was all covered in snow.

Today passing through and Mrs Felix noticed this cache!

Well yep we have found all the surrounding caches so guessing we qualify for this one too!

OK, we've found this virtual cache hiding in virtual space so we think we may be entitled to log it... virtually that is. However, even though it's a 1/1, we couldn't just leave it at that could we? We're virtuous cachers, virtually or otherwise. So let's pad things out a little just for fun...

Geoscience Aust do indeed state the listed coords and also note that it is "found on the western shore of Little Pine Lagoon". Though as can be seen from any map or device of your choice it is in fact located almost exactly due south of the southwestern end of Little Pine Lagoon, which can hardly be said to be on the western shore, even if you were geographically challenged. Shame on you Geoscience Aust! I take the trouble not to resort to abbreviations here.

They go on to state this lake lies "between the towns of Bronte and Miena". Indeed it does if you assume the "town of Bronte" refers to Bronte Park. But then they muddy the waters by referring to a cairn just east of Bronte. This is clearly state trig point 715 (TP5641 on GCA) which bears the cairn "located near the geographical centre of Tasmania". This is located just north (not east) of Bronte Lagoon & some 6.5Km south of Bronte Park township.

So there is a distance of 19.2Km between the claimed "centre for Tasmania" at these coords & "near the geographical centre" at the cairn. So where is the true centre? Does anyone really care? All that can be said is that Geoscience Aust may know less than Geocaching Aust on this matter.

Thanks for the virtual EuDes, and for the chance to ramble on at length about very little. Wink

Found this cache page while searching for caches to find in the heart of Tasmania, which may have been published since our last vist. Have done the Tassie Belly Button cache and trig. TFTV

We have visited Tassie and few times and love the beautiful scenery. Last year we spent about 10 days in Sorrell and then about 2 weeks travelling in a camper - a great place

16-Oct-13

I've been lucky enough to visit Tassie a number of times, seeing a bit of both Launceston and Hobart and places in-between.

However, my favourite trip was in a camper van, from Hobart out to Lake St. Clair. I'll never forget that week.

My now 39 year old son was then about 6, so that gives me the date, so long ago.

We never reached this 'heart' of Tasmania, though . . .

Thanks to EuDes for the Virtual!

Having made virtual visits to the centres of some other states and territories, we thought it time to make a virtual visit to one of the designated centres of our home state, Tasmania. We have visited this general area many times and have actually found a cache within a couple of kilometres of this virtual. TFTC EuDes - another step on our virtual tour of Australia.

Another of the heart of the matter caches that you simply need to find the cache page? Logged as found.

Did the virtual search. Had a very good look at Google Earth. What a very good idea for a series.

29-Sep-13
Well that is an interesting journey. I am all for new adventures and this one is unusual to say the least. Amazing really what you can see on Google Earth!
Thanks for the great idea, loved it.
