Description
One of a series of virtual cache visits to the centre of Australia, its states and mainland territories.
The thing I really like about the Geocaching Australia site is that it allows 'unusual' caches that aren't permitted on the International site. A recent GCA find that had me confused for a while got me thinking about a series that gets to the heart of our great nation and brings a smile(y) to those who find it.
The rules of the caches in this series are simple — find the cache, log your find. That's it.
So, let's go.
Centre of Tasmania
According to the Geoscience Australia website, one possible centre for Tasmania is found on the western shore of Little Pine Lagoon. This small lake lies next to the Marlborough Highway, between the towns of Bronte and Miena. On the Lyell Highway, just a short distance east of Bronte, lies a cairn that was erected in 1983 by members of the Institution of Surveyors (Australian Tasmanian Division). This marker commemorates the early surveyors who explored and mapped the state, and marks Trig Point 715 — said to be near the geographical centre.
The Google Maps view of the centre of Tasmania looks something like this:
Position on Tasmania South East 1:250 000 and 8214 Meander 1:100 000 scale maps.
If you decide to journey to any of the locations in this series, please remember:
- Travel in outback Australia can be extremely hazardous. Plan your trip with care and seek and follow local advice on what precautions to take.
- Be aware of private property restrictions — 'private' means exactly that!
- Do not risk your life to log a find on any of the caches in this series.

Logs
Love to get down to Tassie again. Looks like you could almost walk straight to this one.
I have found the belly button cache way back in 2007 as well. Thanks eludes this virtual tour.
Cheers,
The Hancock Clan
I had intended to walk to the location and see what was there some time ago but as time goes by and still sitting at home I realise that's not going to happen soon so as others have done I just log a find.

Unsure exactly what we were meant to do here, we read other logs and realize we can just log it. We took a photo on the road as close as we could get without going bush. We have found most of the other caches around here so will add this to our finds. TFTC
Today passing through and Mrs Felix noticed this cache!
Well yep we have found all the surrounding caches so guessing we qualify for this one too!

Geoscience Aust do indeed state the listed coords and also note that it is "found on the western shore of Little Pine Lagoon". Though as can be seen from any map or device of your choice it is in fact located almost exactly due south of the southwestern end of Little Pine Lagoon, which can hardly be said to be on the western shore, even if you were geographically challenged. Shame on you Geoscience Aust! I take the trouble not to resort to abbreviations here.
They go on to state this lake lies "between the towns of Bronte and Miena". Indeed it does if you assume the "town of Bronte" refers to Bronte Park. But then they muddy the waters by referring to a cairn just east of Bronte. This is clearly state trig point 715 (TP5641 on GCA) which bears the cairn "located near the geographical centre of Tasmania". This is located just north (not east) of Bronte Lagoon & some 6.5Km south of Bronte Park township.
So there is a distance of 19.2Km between the claimed "centre for Tasmania" at these coords & "near the geographical centre" at the cairn. So where is the true centre? Does anyone really care? All that can be said is that Geoscience Aust may know less than Geocaching Aust on this matter.
Thanks for the virtual EuDes, and for the chance to ramble on at length about very little.

I've been lucky enough to visit Tassie a number of times, seeing a bit of both Launceston and Hobart and places in-between.
However, my favourite trip was in a camper van, from Hobart out to Lake St. Clair. I'll never forget that week.
My now 39 year old son was then about 6, so that gives me the date, so long ago.
We never reached this 'heart' of Tasmania, though . . .
Thanks to EuDes for the Virtual!
Did the virtual search. Had a very good look at Google Earth. What a very good idea for a series.
Thanks for the great idea, loved it.
Done the virtual research now claiming a virtual smiley.
TFTC and cheers
OldSaint.
Never been to the Apple Isle, hope to one day. TFTC!
