Description
One of a series of virtual cache visits to the centre of Australia, its states and mainland territories.
The thing I really like about the Geocaching Australia site is that it allows 'unusual' caches that aren't permitted on the International site. A recent GCA find that had me confused for a while got me thinking about a series that gets to the heart of our great nation and brings a smile(y) to those who find it.
The rules of the caches in this series are simple — find the cache, log your find. That's it.
So, let's go.
Centre of New South Wales
According to the Geoscience Australia website, one possible definition of the centre for New South Wales is located just off Cockies Road, 33km west-north-west of Tottenham (Tottenham is 110km west of Dubbo). This spot, south of the Fiveways Intersection, is marked by a large sign, constructed for Australia's Bicentennial celebrations.
The Google Maps view of the centre of NSW looks something like this:
Position on SI55-03 Narromine 1:250 000 and 8333 Tottenham 1:100 000 scale maps.
If you decide to journey to any of the locations in this series, please remember:
- Travel in outback Australia can be extremely hazardous. Plan your trip with care and seek and follow local advice on what precautions to take.
- Be aware of private property restrictions — 'private' means exactly that!
- Do not risk your life to log a find on any of the caches in this series.

Logs
A few years ago the kids were gifted an annual pass to Taronga Zoo by the Grandparents so we came out to Dubbo every school holidays. We even stopped by the nearby cairn marking the centre of NSW, but can't find any photos. Guess we will have to head back there sometime on the future and update this log.
Cheers eudes.
Sorry we didn't get any photos this trip.
If you are planing on heading out this way be mindful of the wildlife especially around Tottenham where We got a roo on the way home. Thankfully very little damage.
All that was left to do was run the gauntlet of the road back from Tottenham and Tullamore, must have been about 40 roo's and they just the ones we seen. Was well worth the later trip back (7.30-8) after a nice Chinese feed at the Tottenham Bowling Club.
Thanks
Albida
The NSW heart is a little disappointing as although we've travelled through Nyngan on at least 3 or 4 occasions (the first we recall distinctly was a memorable stay on 1/7/2000) en route to points outback, we can't recall ever coming via Tullamore. The Barrier Hwy just out of Nyngan puts us 65Km from our target. TFTV EuDes.
In years past (maybe late 1970s or early 1980s) I visited the Warrumbungles and recall driving through Nyngan at some point. That's the closest I've been to this remote NSW spot, but have nice memories of the general area.
One day I hope to pass through this territory again, now that I'm retired.
Many thanks to EuDes for the new Virtual!
Another of the heart of the matter caches that you simply need to find the cache page? Logged as found. Did the virtual search consulted Google Earth and enjoyed the virtual realm. What a really good idea for a series. TFTC
Thanks for the great idea, loved it.
