Description

One of a series of virtual cache visits to the centre of Australia, its states and mainland territories.

The thing I really like about the Geocaching Australia site is that it allows 'unusual' caches that aren't permitted on the International site.  A recent GCA find that had me confused for a while got me thinking about a series that gets to the heart of our great nation and brings a smile(y) to those who find it.

The rules of the caches in this series are simple  find the cache, log your find.  That's it.

So, let's go.

Centre of South Australia

According to the Geoscience Australia website, even though three sides of its border are straight lines, defining the centre of South Australia is still no easy task thanks to an irregular shaped coastline.  According to one method, the centre is near the Churchill Smith bore, which is approximately 12km north-east of the Mt Eba cattle station. In relation to more commonly known landmarks, the centre of South Australia is located some distance south-west of Lake Eyre.

The Google Maps view of the centre of SA looks something like this:

The centre of SA

Position on SH53-11 Kingoonya 1:250 000 and 6037 Eba 1:100 000 scale maps.

If you decide to journey to any of the locations in this series, please remember:

  • Travel in outback Australia can be extremely hazardous. Plan your trip with care and seek and follow local advice on what precautions to take.
  • Be aware of private property restrictions — 'private' means exactly that!
  • Do not risk your life to log a find on any of the caches in this series.

A novel idea, closest we can get to this point is the Highway approx 55km which we have travelled a few times over the years, fun to actually get to the centre but its in the Woomera prohibited zone, so the highway will have to do.

I've been closer than some and further than others but thanks for the virtual visit to this beautiful state. Good to know where this centre is. Clapping

This is a fun little aspirational series. We will add these to the list of places to attempt to visit in the future, although a few will be pretty difficult.

Good to see another desert location. There are a few tracks around, but they are probably private. May be a challenge to get close to this one.

It is interesting again to zoom in on this landscape. I haven't been very near to this place..maybe flinders ranges the closest.
Cheers

Been along the Stuart Highway between Coober Pedy and Port Augusta so only a stones throw away LaughingLaughing
Thank you for this virtual series, it's been fun Smile

We visited here virtually today although we have been within 60klms of this position on our visit to Alice Springs Clan Minotaur

Looking through caches that I could possibly find without leaving the comfort of my own home and these popped up. It was great fun visiting the centers Australia. I hope this is a correct way of logging these caches (Virtually visiting). If you are not happy with this method of logging, please let me know so I delete my logs. TFTC's Very Happy

Been up and down the Stuart Highway many a time, including a stop and find at the 'No Butts" cache in September 2011
Have also camped within about 10km of here on a couple of occasions. That is close enough for me Very Happy
Cheers & thanks for the memories EuDes

I am covering some Kms today and my second last stop for the day is South Australia. We come to South Australia each summer to watch the Tour downunder but unfortunately have not ventured this far north. Another place to visit in retirement! Thanks EuDes for this series now just to get to the centre of Australua and my journey is complete

We got to within 54.8 km of the centre, once on the way to the Alice Springs Experience Event and again on the return journey south. TFTV

This one popped up on our GPS as we were driving down the Stuart Hwy - 54.9 K's away mmmmm were's that going to be. Checked out the cache page and it was easier than we thought. So close but yet so far. Thanks for the virtual.

Having recently got to the heart of the matter in our home state we thought it would be disrespectful not to do the virtual grand tour so to speak. However, as we're that way inclined & just love pouring over maps and fiddling with coordinates we gave ourselves the additional task of determining how close we've physically managed to get to these virtual locations over the years. We were quite surprised with the results as all 9 were well within the 100Km range.
The Stuart Hwy figures again, getting us to within 55Km odd of our target. We've been to Roxby Downs & travelled the Oodnadatta Track but they're further away. TFTV EuDes.

We love travelling in the outback and stopped in Glendambo about 4 weeks ago.
Discovered this cache, by accident on a rainy day
Thanks

Well, we continue on a virtual tour of the centres of each of the Australian States. Although we have driven the Stuart Highway from south to north, we didn't venture off "the straight and narrow" in South Australia. Thanks for this cache EuDes - all Australian States and Territories now "visited" and just the centre (one of them!) to visit virtually.

I haven't travelled very extensively in South Australia. In fact, I think I've only visited twice and probably flown over the state a couple of more times. I've certainly never been anywhere near 'the heart' of SA.

However, once when I was in Adelaide, attending a conference of some kind, I remarked on the very hot weather. On the day I left, I was sitting in the Adelaide Airport and noticed that the weather themometer was showing 44 degrees. As far as I know, that's the hottest temperature I've ever experienced in Australia -- or anywhere else, for that matter!

Thanks to EuDes for the Virtual!

Another of the heart of the matter caches that you simply need to find the cache page? Logged as found.

Did the virtual search. Had a very good look at Google Earth. What a very good idea for a series.

Well that is an interesting journey. I am all for new adventures and this one is unusual to say the least. Amazing really what you can see on Google Earth!
Thanks for the great idea, loved it.

Your virtual "page" and a look on Google Earth are virtually two different experiences (TeHeHe)
