Description

A cache at Somerst Cape York

Somerset is a settlement originally designed as a port for ships passing through the Torres Strait. The township was officially established in 21 August 1864 ad was abandoned in 1942.

The person who was charged with overseeing the development was John Jardine, a magistrate from Rockhampton. The settlement originally consoited of hte resident magistrates house, hospital, barracks to house 20 marines, police quarters, armoury and customs house. Unfortunately there was only room for about three or four ships at a time to anchor in the Albany Passage, but also only about one vessel in 10 passed within sight of Somerset.

Ill health forced the first magistrate, Captain Simpson, to resign and John Jardine's eldest son, Frank, was offered the position. In 1877 Somerset's administrative responsibilites were transferred to Thursday Island. Frank died in 1919 and his Samoan wife, Sana died four years later. They are both buried at Somerset.

Descendants of Frank and Sana continued to live in Somerst til they were evacuated during World War II. Unfortunately the old residence was burnt down in the 1960s.

To log the cache simply take a photo of yoursef, and/or GPS with the cannons and flagpole at the site.

Another interesting piece of history up here. The kids all loves the cannons and insisted on individual and group shots with all the cannons, which resulted in a late lunch. At least they were having fun

We did a trip to Cape York in 2014. We did a day trip to The Tip from the campground. On the way back headed out here and took the attached photo. Very windy here! TFTC

We are lucky enough to have very special geofriends who very kindly offered to look after our furbaby while we headed to the tip of Cape York and detoured to some lovely National Parks along the way. We attempted any geocaches which we passed along the way and this was one of themSmile

Very many thanks to all those who have placed and maintain their caches in this very remote part of the country.

Logging our finds in order and will upload the required photo as soon as possible.

Many thanks for the hide Shifter Brains ClappingDancing

Visited on our fantastic Cape York Adventure.

Thanks for helping us explore this amazing area.

Whilst at Punsand Bay they had a fabulous photo of the old homestead. We attempted to take a photo of the photo.

Passed by here a few days back. First time no flag was flying, second visit, someone had hoisted an aussie flag.
