Description

HM Prison Bendigo was a medium security prison facility and opened in 1863 after building began in the 1850s. A major refurbishment which included sewering each cell was undertaken in 1993-94.

The prison was officially closed on 5 January 2006 and in April 2015 the prison was reopened as the 1000 seat theatre for the Bendigo community,

This stunning buiding is now an amazing theatre and learning centre.  Ulumbarra, means ‘gather  together’ and ‘meeting place’ in the language of the Dja Dja Wurrung people.

I f you get a chance take a look inside but if you are not able to then please take a photo of yourself somewhere in the vicinity.

After all the years of coming to Bendigo it was time to finally check this one off the list Very Happy

'Uncle Dan' finally decided to let us 'unclean' Melbourne Metro people to travel to regional so was great to be able to get back to Bendigo to catch up with family again and to grab a cache or two. Dancing

Many thanks again The Morris for highlighting this area. Clapping

out for day with my son. we have both been ins oi de on another day for a performance. a few months back I also did a backstage tour. fantastic insights to the running of this magnificent building.

We were very fortunate to have been inside this magnificent building to see a performance of Les Miserable (which was a marvellous production as well).
It was wonderful to see that the internal entrance was retained as cells, and, considering the show we were there to see, it was a most fitting setting for it.
I was most impressed with the fact that they left the entrance to the downstairs kitchen, accessible by a narrow circular staircase, covered by a glass section of the floor, it was lit from below and one could only wonder how difficult it would have been to try and carry trays of food up those narrow winding stairs.
It was a brilliant conversion of the historic prison to a very modern theatre, retaining so much of the original structure, and highlighting its features.
Highly recommended for everyone to see inside it if you can.
Thanks for the Virtual The Morris

It was a day if exploring Bendigo cache by cache.

This was the morning's second. A couple of dead gum trees frame the old gaol, giving it a macabre atmosphere.

Found on the final leg of our 2017 escape trip.
A warm cloudy Spring day for a final drive around in Bendigo.
Hardly any muggles around today, and mostly good quick finds.
It looks like it would a great theatre in there,
Thanks for the cache,

The wench had an appointment a short distance away so I wandered over for a quick photo. It was quite cool and very blowy so I'll have a better look around next weekend when I drop of a load of passengers.
I remember finding a Romax cache close to here a few years ago. The building had a vastly different use back then.

Our thanks to The Morris.

911. Walking to this one from the last lot and a few of the trees sticking up above the wall made it look like a three headed dragon.

TFTV and the Monday.

Early this morning we used the virtual caches to guide us around parts of Bendigo. The mixture of sculpture and historic locations was very interesting, a tour we thoroughly enjoyed.

The vision of transforming the old gaol into a theatre and cultural centre was superb. The dominant placement of the gaol overlooking Bendigo has resulted in a grand location for the arts in the city. A photo of Mrs y'stassie at the front of Ulumbarra has been added to the Gallery. Thanks The Morris for the cache and the series.

A hot walk down from the tower to find the gates locked. I would have thought they would be openbon Saturdays. A quick pic and back to the air conditioned car. Thanks to The Morris for this set of virtuals.

What a busy place today. Looks like an interstate gymnastic competition was in full swing. Didn't see any with Tassie tracksuits on though.
Wandered arond this beautiful old building and was impressed with the way they have blended the old and the new.
Grabbed 2 photos, one inside and one out.
A classic example of the places geocaching can take you. Thanks.
