Description

Great Northern Railway - Historic Engineering Marker #90

The Hunter Valley Railway Company, formed in 1853, commenced work on the original railway under contract to William Wright for the section from Honeysuckle Point (near the present Civic Station) to Hexham (the present Tarro Station). This section had to cross what is known as the Hexham Swamp, and the experience of George Stephenson at Chat Moss in England was put to good use when a corduroy of brushwood was used as the underlay for the embankment: this embankment is still in use. A further contract was let to Wright and Randle in 1857 for the section onwards to East Maitland, finishing at what is now the Victoria Street Station. Much of the civil infrastructure for this section of line is still in place, making it possibly the oldest in Australia continuously worked by locomotives (a section near Port Adelaide may lay claim to being slightly older). The line was extended eastwards to the present Newcastle Station and westwards to near the present Maitland Station in 1858, then continued northwards on the inland route to Queensland, being opened to Wallangarra (HEM on station) in January 1888.

Contents of the plaque:

The Hunter River Railway Co., with consulting engineer James Wallace and resident engineer J N Gale, constructed this railway from 1854, the NSW Government taking over in 1855. Small culverts used brickwork and some brickwork remains; bridges were built of timber. Pioneering work used brushwood matting over soft ground in Hexham Swamp. Governor Denison opened the line between Honeysuckle and East Maitland on 30th March 1857, proclaiming it the Great Northern Railway. Extensions to Newcastle and West Maitland opened in 1858.

Last day of the Hunter expedition already. Starting with some local caching, then the lunchtime event in Morphett and then caching my way home for several hours.

The lads and myself were heading to the 'Hawaiian Shirts Galore' GC.com event in Monkerai, so headed up the back way to find a few caches on the way. The day started out cool and rainy but turned into a bottler, perfect for camping. We were cruising through Maitland and spotted this on the GPS - a quick diversion and we were off. We had to scrutinise this plaque a while back for a GC cache..... Thanks!

I walked past the plaque, missing it, and asked station staff about it. They had no idea, even saying there wasn't one. (I had a similar response in a Sydney railway station.) Anyway, I spotted the plaque as I left, near the front station entrance. I went back to tell the staff they do have this plaque Rolling Eyes. TFTC Team MavEtJu.

A fairly quiet railway station on a Saturday afternoon and a parking spot big enough for the campervan was found very close by.
Then it was just a short walk to get the required snap. Thanks.

Visiting Maitland today for Steam Fest and decided to grab several GA caches nearby. Lits of muggles about at the station and marker was covered with a banner...but all good as photo was taken and we moved onto the trig up the road.

Sadly didn't find it today. With railway work happening, the area has become a second bus stop and today everyone seemed to want to go somewhere. There were people standing and sitting all over this area. I didn't want to be weaving in and out of them and maybe even asking then to move just to get a look at and photo of the plaque. Another time. Smile
