Description

Tamworth Street Lighting Plant - Historic Engineering Marker #11

Contents of the plaque:

On 9 November 1888 the Tamworth Borough Council inaugurated Australia’s first electric street lighting plant on this site. Two 12 horsepower stream engines driving Crompton 230 volt 18kw dynamos supplied electricity to 52 street lights with carbon filament lamps and 7 arc lights. The system was installed and initially operated by Sydney (SYD) electrical engineers Harrison and Whiffen, agents for R.E. Crompton & Co. of England. Its success contributed significantly to the acceptance of electric lighting in Australia.

When logging this virtual, please add a photo of yourself or your GPSr at the plaque.

What a great place! The history, the relics, the park. And it was great weather at lunch on Saturday when I came by here. It's days like these and places like these that make you fall in love with a town like Tamworth. Thanks so much for creating this series. I'm loving the places I'm discovering through them. Smile

Please excuse the really bad photo - it was the best I could get from a terrible film file. You should see the worst one with both myself and the plaque - actually no, no one should ever. haha

Another interesting engineering marker destination. These landmarks are certainly bringing out the inner geek/nerd.
Found the plaque and then found the themed cache nearby and enjoyed reading the information in the early morning, I will have to return to the museum with my family on my next tour up north. Thanks Smile

On our last visit to Tamworth we didn't take co-ordinates for this and just presumed we had the right spot ..... until we arrived at it. Realising our mistake we knew where we should have been. Brick Wall If it hadn't been so hot and the week before Christmas we would have made the effort to go to the correct location but as it was we decided to leave it for another less busy and cooler day. Today was it, and happily we're still FTF. TFTC Team MavEtJu.
