Description

Lighthouses of NSW - South Solitary Lighthouse

This lighthouse was considered the most isolated on the New South Wales coast. It was the first and the last New South Wales lighthouse to use kerosene.

As early as 1856 it had been suggested that a lighthouse be established on either North of South Solitary Islands, near Coffs Harbour. When asked, ships masters favoured South Solitary over North Solitary for the location of a light by 3 to 1.

Pedal radio established in 1937 so the the keepers could communicate with Norah Head. This was later replaced by a Bendix radio which relieved the need for pedalling. Previously the only communication with the mainland was by signalling lamp or heliograph.

Height: 20 metres
Elevation: 58 metres
Pattern: Flash white every 5.00 seconds
Range: 20 nautical miles / 37 km

Fun fact:

Conditions for the builders of the new light were most unfavourable as stated in From Dusk Till Dawn:

"The weather was often so bad that several times steamers attempting to land materials and supplies had to slip their cables and run for shelter. A small crane erected on the landing was twice washed away during construction; since then three others have been washed away. Once during construction a hurricane drove the sea over the centre of the island (twenty-seven metres elevation but not the highest point of the island)."

It goes on to say:

"A tiny eleven hectares in area, the island supports only harsh, scrubby grass. The first government supervisor arrived at night and when he saw it next morning he was so startled that he remained only a fortnight."

Didn’t check to see if a cache here when I was part of the tour today. So the best photo I had was outside of the lighthouse trying not to get blown away

After a few years of covid and everything being cancelled, it was nice to see this tour operating again, so we decided to do it. I’ve always wanted to hear the stories from times gone in how island life was lived – and our tour guide today told us all about it.

The trig and this cache were a nice bonus, and I’ve got a new appreciation for your lighthouse series now, and wonder when I’ll be logging the next one.

I was glad I was able to visit the island in person – it’s not easy to get too with tours so limited these days and I think a trip out here is well worth the money. Especially when the weather was as good as it was today.

Plenty of whales and turtles splashing about in the sea below us today too, which added another level of enjoyment to the days activities. I don’t usually find much joy in virtual caches, but this one is an exception. Thanks for listing the lighthouses here on GCA. I’m going to try and tick a few more off my list.

Look at all these telephoto logs! haha. Well Edwin, here, have some detail photos of the lighthouse on South Solitary Island. I didn't get many because I was too busy enjoying the day.

How did I get close up photos?

MattyRx and I had both been eyeing this island voyage off for a number of years. I can't recall if we'd discussed it before but recently MattyRx mentioned it was that time of year again when you could access the island. Immediately I thought, LETS DO IT! So we did.

There will be a video made soon. I'll log a write note for that later. If you want a more detailed adventure story, read the trig log.

Since it seems to be OK to grab the lighthouse from a distance we are logging it while up in Arrawarra for Christmas. One day we hope to get over to the island itself when the helicopter tours are up and running again. When we do we will recognise with a close quarters shot.

This was as close as we could get ,while visiting family in the area

Well, it seems as if it is kosher to claim this as a lighthouse from a distance, but not the trig. Oh well...when in Rome, eh?

Day 78 Mainland trip (now heading to OZGM)
Out and about caching in and around Coffs Harbour and we stopped to photograph this lighthouse from the beach. As this is the closest we will ever get get to it, we have logged a find. We are not claiming a first to find as someone may get closer. Another in the series ticked off. TFTV
