Description

Lighthouses of SA - Troubridge Hill Lighthouse

The Troubridge Hill Lighthouse is unique because it is built from special wedge shaped bricks and has never been rendered or painted, creating a very distinctive day mark.

The area is known for the treacherous Troubridge Shoal and nearby Marion Reef which by 1911 had claimed nineteen ships. The lighthouse is built from special wedge shaped clay bricks that were fired especially for this lighthouse. The lantern room is fabricated from fibreglass. One of only a handful of brick lighthouses in Australia, the lighthouse is unique as the bricks have never been rendered or painted, making it a distinctive day mark.

The tower is designed to resist earthquakes and high winds. Both Troubridge Hill and Corny Point suffered from several earthquakes in the early 20th century.

Height: 32 metres
Elevation: 62 metres
Pattern: Group Flashing 2 in 15 sec
Range: 22 nautical miles / 41 km

Photo: Ed Kavaliunas

Fun fact: It received a special award from the South Australian Clay Brick Association for an outstanding application of clay brickwork.

For more information, see Troubirgde Hill Lighthouse at lighthouses.org.au.

Very impressive structure.

The ocean today was deceptively calm but this magnificent structure stands tall and proud remembering decades past when she assisted unwary sailors Smile
Many thanks for showing us this beautiful area Team MavEtJu ClappingDancing

This is the third time we've visited the lighthouse in the name of geocaching. I even have a photo of me in front of it that we used to log a virtual cache on Terracaching.com. I could have cheated and recycled the old photo, but decided to swing by once again for an up to date pic. Nothing seems to have changed with the lighthouse itself.

Thanks Team MavEtJu.

Found whilst out and about caching the Yorke Peninsular. Looks like a gigantic pepper grinder.

While in the area tonight and while filling in a little time before a 2.30am flash mob event I called by here
Very spectacular here by moonlight [^]
And the lighthouse seemed to reach up to the sky in the reflections
Cheers

Found It!
A relatively 'modern' lighthouse as far as lighthouses go - by 1980 the importance of lighthouses were almost coming to an end...
A nice (by windy!) little stop here today while in the area getting the June LWE event organised!

Another find on a leisurely drive around the heel of Yorkes Peninsular.

Have been guided by this lighthouse as a daytime landmark and its light on a few sails in the area, but this was my first visit to the lighthouse itself.

Whilst visiting the southern Yorke Peninsula today we visited the very impressive and unique Troubridge Hill Lighthouse. The brickies certainly earned their pay building this structure. The required photo has been added to the Gallery. As there are no other logs, we will claim FTF. Thanks Team MavEtJu for the cache.
