Description

Lighthouses of VIC - Black Lighthouse

Queenscliff's famous Black Lighthouse is one of only ahandful in the world that are unpainted black stone.

The lighthouse was built to replace an earlier sandstone 1843 lighthouse that was under powered and the tower had structurally deteriorated. The new light was built in 1862 in conjunction with the White (Low) Lighthouse and therefore had many similarities in design.

The entrance was 3.5 metres above ground level reflecting the English lighthouses that where built on rocks at sea level. The entrance was later rebuilt at ground level. Fort Queenscliff was built around the light after fears that ships carrying gold from the gold rush may be attacked by privateers.Height: 25 metres

Elevation: 40 metres
Pattern: Continuous White Light

Photo: Winsome Bonhan

Fun fact: It is the only black lighthouse in the Southern Hemisphere.

For more information, see Black Lighthouse at lighthouses.org.au.

When logging this cache, please add a photo of yourself or your GPS with this lighthouse.

This is a good area for light houses. Black one seems quite strange?

Photo not taken from the given coordinates as we thought the view of it was better from here. S 38 16.260 E 144 39.723.
Seems strange to have a black lighthouse - surely that makes it harder to see.
Thanks for the cache Team MavEtJu.

#GA5698 - 13:55; Out on a day tour to Queenscliffe with the geomum and grabbed a snap of a couple of lighthouses while we were in the area. Managed to collect a few caches on the day and nice to add another lighthouse or two as well! Spotted this one on our way out of town! TFTC Team MavEtJu Clan Cerberus

We were adventure labbing in the Point Lonsdale area today and used the opportunity to grab a few GCA caches in the area as well, this one was on our hit list. They certainly stand out. TFTF

The thing I love about caching is the interesting stories, the extra interest and attention you take when travelling, the sight-seeing, the history, the interests of the individual CO’s, the fantastic photo opportunities and sometimes finding places that even some locals don’t know about. I, like most cachers, look for more than a mint tin or a container under a bush. I appreciate the time that most CO’s take to construct a cache and write up a comprehensive listing and to create an interesting cache. I love travelling this big land of ours. I love taking the roads less travelled seeing the sights, the amazing colours, the natural beauty. I love the diversity of the land, the different scenes in the different seasons, the fresh air, the open plains, the lofty vistas and the magnificent waters. Dancing
I love the different coffee shops I find. I love every different thing I photograph. I enjoy the times I cache with others but I usually cache on my own. I enjoy taking my time and meandering around rather than going from one cache to the next and so on… The geocaches are a great bonus of my travels. It's amazing to see the country in the eyes of a Geocacher. Thank you for adding this cache to my real-life treasure hunt. I appreciate your efforts Team MavEtJu. Clapping

After attending the Prom Flash Mob Event in Geelong this morning, my plan was to head out to this area.
The day out here with nirgalagrin and AlphaDeltaIndigo was most productive with many great caches found.
We checked the GA app on a whim and were pleasantly surprised to find two caches close by.
Thank you for the history lesson Team MavEtJu

Well, another day of filling in time between the earlier, but more civilized Flash Mob event and the later, but oh, so much earlier edition...

So AlphaDeltaIndigo, n0w0rries and I went off on the hunt. Probably far less finds than we might otherwise, but they were all high quality and there may have been hijinks involved. All up, a fun day and night.

Queenscliff was one of our priorities, as n0w0rries was chasing down some information. What he was looking for remained elusive, but we noted that we were almost standing on a pair of GA caches. His photo is far better than the ones I took, so I'll spare everyone.

Another lighthouse visited.

We came to Queenscliff especially to see this and the white lighthouse.
The only way you can get up close to this one now is if you pay to do the tour through the fort as well
We just had to be content for Muggle Hubby to take my photo from outside the fence.
However we were lucky to meet a local there who pointed out the tower we could see from the park. He told us it was free to access, and had a lift inside it, and there was a fantastic view from the top. He was correct. It is called 360 degrees, and the view is excellent.
Look out for my new virtual!

A quick visit to the location and grabbed the photo of this lighthouse here today. A pleasant location to be on a cold winter afternoon with great views of the water and the fort.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks for the geocache placed here for us to find today.

Thanks Team MavEtJu for the virtual.

We arrived in Queenscliff late this afternoon. Just after tea we visited both the White and Black Lighthouses. As the Black Lighthouse is located within Fort Queenscliff and is not accessible at most times, photos have to to taken from outside the perimeter of the fort. A photo of the Black Lighthouse is attached. Thanks Team MavEtJu for the cache and the series.
