Description
Join the fun of an event and competition chasing new caches
Come one, come all to caughtatwork's cache chase. Based on an event held by Big Brothers Big Sisters and administered by Geocaching Australia in 2011 and 2012 this event will stretch you and your caching ability to the limits.
The event will start at 9:00am and will run until people decide to go home, when the weather gets too hot or when caughtatwork decides he's had enough.
- As the event is in high summer, remember to Slip Slop Slap Seek Slide.
- There is 3 hour free carparking within a short distance from the posted co-ordinates but it will your responsibility to ensure that you don't run foul of any parking inspectors. Longer, paid, carparking can be found in other areas of Docklands which are only a few minutes' walk from the posted co-ordinates.
- Catch the free City Circle Tram or take one of the following:
- NewQuay and Waterfront City - tram 30 via La Trobe Street, tram 70 via Flinders Street or tram 86 via Bourke Street.
- Victoria Harbour - tram 48 or 11 via Collins Street.
- Trains are available to Southern Cross Station, but it's a long walk from there to the posted co-ordinates so consider using the tram to get from the railway station to the event.
- You could hire a bike for the event provided you think safe and wear a helmet.
- There are a few BBQs in the area (non-reservable, so first in best dressed).
- There is no seating or tables, so you will need to bring your own to suite your own level of comfort.
- Toilets are available in the nearby pavilion.
- According to council restrictions, no erections are permitted in this park, so gazebos are not permitted, but there was no mention of umbrellas so that may provide you the best shade.
- There is a lack of shade in the park area but the area directly under the bridge is shaded at various times of the day and the veranda at the pavilion may also be helpful if you need a few moments out of the s.
- Check out http://maps.melbourne.vic.gov.au/ for an interactive map and look around for things that you may need or want in the area.
- If you have someone who will stay behind with the kids, there is alo a neat playground to keep the kids entertained while you're away finding geocaches.
The competition will run from 10:00am to 12:00pm (2 hours).
On the day there will be 50 geocaches to find, spread out across the Docklands precinct from Costco in the North, to Webb Bridge in the South, from the Railway Good Sheds in the East to Ron Barassi Snr Park in the West. The competition area is between 3 sqkm and 4 sqkm so be prepared for some decent exercise. 47 of the geocaches are permanent and will remain in play after the event day has completed. 3 will only be available during the event and there will be a special requirement for you to achieve to log them. So potentially up for grabs are 50 brand new Geocaching Australia geocaches to hunt down and add to your tally.
There is a limit of 50 geocaching teams for the competition component of the event and teams who register their "will attend" first will be given priority on the day. If by the time the game is ready to commence there are fewer than 50 teams, team will be added on a first come, first served basis. So log your will attend, just in case.
- Your team must stay together and be present at all geocache finds. No splitting your team up to cover the largest area. Spotters will be placed around the game area but you will never know where or when they may appear to check your team is together.
- You will need to find as many of the 50 geocaches as you can. Whether you ride, walk, run, drive, swim, fly or apparate is entirely up to you. Remember if you ride you MUST wear a bike helmet or bring one with you and hire a bike at Docklands.
- Points are allocated to the geocaches based on a variety of factors including difficulty, terrain, distance from the start point and any other random number used to make some more challenging and worth of chasing than others.
- You will be told the points on the day so you will have a few minutes to strategise before heading out.
- You will be provided with the details of the geocaches to find (including the name of the geocache, difficulty, terrain, co-ordinates and a description).
- You will be provided with a hints envelope which if returned unopened will garner you additional points.
- There will be first to find prizes in some of the geocaches which will garner you additional points.
- You will need to engage in 3 additional activities to claim the final of the 50 geocaches and details will be provided on the day, and needless to say that they will provide additional points but must be completed in the 2 hour competition window.
- Confirmation of you having found the geocache will be one of 7 coloured stickers that you will identify from inside the geocache container and attach to your competition entry for each geocache you find. Not all stickers may be used, so guessing will not help. If you intend on logging the geocaches at Geocaching Australia after the event etiquette tells you to ensure that your name is in the logbook.
- A GPX file will be available for download from a publicly accessible website starting at around 9:30am. There will also be a limited number of laptops available where you can copy the GPX file for the game across to your GPS. More details will be provided on the day. GPS and laptop compatibility is not guaranteed and you will need to provide your own cable.
- Once the game is over the geocaches will be published and you are welcome to log them online at Geocaching Australia provided your name is in the logbook.
- Please treat the geocaches with care as they are permanent geocaches and will be in play for a long time to come. Treat them as you would your own, rehide them the same, nor worse, not better than when you found them. Treat the containers with care and handle as you would like your own geocaches to be handled.
Prizes
Of course there will be prizes. What would a caughtatwork competition be without some prizes.
- First place - Gold Ammo Can with geocache contents and swaps / trades ready to hide.
- Second place - Silver Ammo Can with geocache contents and swaps / trades ready to hide.
- Third place - Bronze Ammo Can with geocache contents and swaps / trades ready to hide.
- Last place - Wooden "Ammo Can" with nothing inside, not suitable to hide anywhere, really, more of an embarrassment than anything.
Logs
Although we were a little light on for attendees, those that did show up seemed to have a great day working their way around the Docklands area searching for some of the new Cache Chase caches, gathering points along the way. The three activities back at the event sight also generated a bit of laughter from everyone, even though my frisbee score was a bit less than 1
Thank you, CaughtAtWork. It was a very enjoyable day and my first opportunity to find more than a couple of GCA caches in a single day. You've obviously put in a lot of time and effort to create and hide all these caches. Thanks also for the chance to score a few more points for Clan Phoenix.
I'll be in Docklands for a few days next month so I might get a chance to find a few more of these new GCA caches and add to our Clan dominance.
Through a little bit of shameless sequence shuffling I've managed to log this as my 500th GCA "find".
Go Phoenix.

Mr Morris spent his time wandering about with a wooden box and collecting a few caches while Lady Morris sat in the sunshine and had a lovely relaxing couple of hours admiring those shiny pretty ammo cans.
Love your work GCA and congrats to all the winners who got a shiny pretty ammo can. I have can envy
Once back at the start point at the appointed time, a couple more games were played, more points scores and then the big announcement of the winners. Congrats to all who did well and took home a nice shiny ammo can. Hope to see those deployed on GCA somewhere in Melbourne for us to find another day......
Many thanks to caughtatwork for putting the event on. Certainly a big effort went into setting up all the caches and the extra games. Great job. Big thumbs up for suppling the sunscreen and the ice cold water as well.....certainly made a difference on a day like it was. Thanks to LouiseAnn and The Morris for helping out on the day. And great to catch up with those I knew and those I met for the first time.
Hope everyone had a great time....I know I did.
Many thanks must go to caughtatwork for putting on a fun event.
Back at the event site we did well in the stacking and poorly on the other two events. In the end somehow we did just enough to take out second place and walked away with the beautiful Silver ammo can. I'll have to find somewhere to hide it now.
Thanks caughtatwork for organising this fantastic event and thanks also to the helpers.
Have fun everyone.
I'll be bringing the clan along this time to "help"
Sounds like a good day, see you there......
