Description

...it's the sound of the mighty Giants
You feel the ground a-shaking
The other teams are quaking
In their boots before the Giants
We take the longest strides
And the highest leap
We're stronger than the rest
We're the Greater Western Sydney Giants
We're the biggest and the best
And we will never surrender
We'll fight until the end
We're greater than the rest

This virtual cache is located at Manuka Oval - one of the many home grounds occupied by the Greater Western Sydney (GWS) Giants during the AFL Premiership Season. In an attempt to capitalise on the sporting culture of Western Sydney and Canberra, the Football Club was founded in 2009, played its first NAB Cup in 2011 and played its first AFL Season in 2012. They have succeeded in their intended purpose - due to their awesome gnuersey, their super fun club song (one of the best in the competition in my opinion) and their participation in the local community, they have attracted a lot of followers around Australia, especially among younger audiences learning AFL for the first time. In 2016, after a poor first five seasons, their recruitment and coaching payed off when they qualified for their first final series, where they got as far the preliminary final, only to fall short of the eventual premiers, the Western Bulldogs - not that we're complaining though, as we ourselves are Western Bulldogs tragics (GO DOGS)! Some people have criticised their quick success by claiming that it is due to them recieving unfair advantages from the AFL for the benefit of manufacturing them into a superpower - however it is undeniable that they have done great things for AFL in Western Sydney and Canberra!

For the virtual cache, all you need to do is visit the posted coordinates and take a photo of either yourself or your GPS (or both) at the front gates and the ticket booth. If you ever come to watch one of the GWS games, you may have to wait in line at GZ, so that would be a good opportunity to take a photo. If you're wearing a scarf or any other clothing that has your personal team colours, feel free to show that off in your photo.

#GA2587 - 13:20; I had to take the geomobile in for a service and so dropped the geohoney off for some retail therapy first. After the job was done, I collected a couple of caches before picking up the geohoney and stopping in Manuka for some lunch. Grabbed a snap of the Cathedral before crossing the road for another snap or two outside the gates today. I've played fotty here in my younger days, but I must admit the ground has been built up quite a bit since those long gone days. TFTC Toy Hunters Very HappyClan Cerberus

After spending the morning around Captain's Flat I was headed back home past here and decided to stop for a quick image of the gates when no one was about.

Thanks

After lunch at nearby Kingston continued here on my virtual cache run around the lake. There was a match in progress, with a guard near the front gate, so didn't get too close. Lovely winters day for a walk around this area.

Great to visit the oval that we had heard about on the AFL broadcasts over the years. Unfortunately the 2 gates we tried were both closed so we couldn't get in to have a look. Drat and curse!!! The lights looked interesting though - they were certainly at a strange angle.
Thanks.

F(H)ound It! #1775 - @5:13 PM

There's been a bit of controversy on the radio today regarding the change of name of this oval. The gate was firmly locked so I'll have to come back another day to collect the GC traditional within. Thanks for the cache, toy hunters.

Did a GCA Virtual ride today, taking in the virtuals around central Canberra and a couple in Manuka.

An eventful ride - I saw a 3 car pile up, and shortly after, huge storm rolled in!

Out and about cleaning up a few GCA caches and this one was on the list. No problems grabbing the photo, and I have a feeling I'll be back a couple of times this year.

Thanks TH.....nicely done.

Up here for a wedding tomorrow so I decided to take a quick stroll before meeting up with the others. The closer I got to Manuka Oval, the more people there around and it wasn't until I reached the ground that I realised that GWS were playing North in a practice match. Very Happy That gave this cache a little added pazazz as I took the shots at GZ at around 18:00

After meeting the others and a spot of tucker, we even strolled back to see the last 20 minutes of the last quarter. It proves that we're Victorians I guess. Wink

Thanks toy hunters.
