### New Zealand 2024 ###On our 1 week tour North New Zealand tour we visited many caches in Auckland, Habbiton, Taupo, Huka Falls, Piha, Devonport and Mount Eden.We had a lot of great experiences along the way and had a lot of fun searching for the caches. Thanks to all the owners for the great caches Team sissifalke
I needed an easy earth cache for this year's earth cache day, and since I am usually not really good at doing earth caches (volcanos and lava stones seem deadly boring to me), I was happy to spot this nice and, above all, EASY opportunity to earn my souvenir. I came here at low tide and I was surprised to find those old Kauri trees so well-preserved and still so clearly recognisable. I had somehow imagined to find fossils out of stone (this might be an issue of translation, though) and was quite astounded to find WOODEN tree stumps and stems... Very amazing! Very enjoyable earth cache. Very impressive! Thanks for bringing me here!!!
On our holiday in New Zealand, today we are in the city of Auckland. We also visited this Earth Cache, took a photo, and of course we sent the answers to the CO.

Greetings from BC, Canada.
We are a family of 5 on vacation in New Zealand. Cachers in the family include BeesKnees34, SOB_4M, AlexBN16 and me. We have been enjoying the beautiful landscape and visiting some awesome locations.
Stopping along the way to grab some cool caches. We targeted high favourite, old caches, different cache types and some other caches along our routes.
We visited this earthcache before heading to the airport for our trip back home. Gathered the information at low tide and sent to CO for the family group.
This was an interesting location.
Thanks sp8sm8 for the fun earthcache!

We had an early trip up to Auckland today to drop off passengers at the airport then spent a few hours geocaching. I enjoy earthcaches so I had a look at this one and checked the tides in google. Low tide was 7 minutes previous so it was a perfect time for this cache. We went and had a good look around - I can see why it’s best at low tide! Answers sent to the CO, a favourite point from me. After my event this morning, Lumin, Pax and I went off for some caching.
We made our way down to this EC as it’s international EarthCache weekend.
After a few minutes looking around and enjoying the views, we set off to do our tasks.
Fortunately I had a tape measure in the card so I brought it down with me.
We collected our info, came back up the steps and read the sign which helped us understand what we had just seen!
Thanks for the EarthCache! Beautiful spot!

Still out caching with CC and _Pax_ after CC's CCE earlier on today. We had to include an Earthcache since it's Earthcache weekend, and this is one I've been interested to visit for a while, so it was cool to make it here today. Luckily CC was prepared with a tape measure and between the 3 of us we were able to compile some answers. Very squelchy here today but lots of interesting tree remains to see, and a sign nearby to help explain what we were looking at.
Thank you for setting up this Earthcache! Would never have come here or known this was here otherwise, so I'm glad this was here as a reason to visit. I also like the South coords - was that deliberate?

A nice quick find thanks. I never knew this place or natural history existed! CO sent our answers, and allocated a fav point too.
Time for another trip to the North Island for Ms_KR and me. Wellington and beyond here we come. Today we did a little cruising around to the centre and south of Auckland.
Thanks to all CO's for publishing and maintaining their caches. Cheers.

Answers with Karma Reprint. An after dinner exploration on a sunny evening. Loved this place and its history. And the cache. Thanks.
A great place for an earthcache. Found the walk around here very interesting.
new concrete steps and handrail are in place so it's an easy walk down to the shore. Thanks sp8sm8 for bringing us here. Favourite point from us.

We were in the area to do a road side clean up and saw a cache here. Kids were reluctant to get out of car but once we got down to the beach they had a great time exploring the area and learning about the history of the ancient forest. The other interesting find was heaps of swans. Didn’t know they went in the sea. Thanks for this earthcache
I did this cache yesterday while out getting a few caches to get to 4,000 finds - this turned out to be #4,001. We got to the top of the stairs and indeed as the description states the fence has been torn down by the fishermen - at the time we arrived an extended family were getting ready with their fishing nets to do a bit of fishing.
Took the walk down to GZ and collected the measurements by myself while Mrs Tuolei looked after Albert at the top of the stairs. I thought it was very interesting to take a look at and well worth an earthcache - did my measurements with a measuring stick so hopefully they are close enough to keep the CO happy. All done and by now the fishermen had disappeared into distance - the tide goes waaaay out here - I hope they go plenty of mullet!
Thanks for the interesting earthcache.

We had a very nice holiday in New Zealand. Almost every day beautiful weather. We traveled with the camper home from the north to the south island. we have found a lot of very nice caches. Thanks for showing the nice places where we found the caches. Answers are send .

Find number 6494. Found myself at the carpark and the tide was out so thought I would give this earthcache a go. Made my way to GZ and started my measuring and then a local lady came along and asked me what I was doing. I duly read her exerts from the cache page and she was impressed with that. Her concern was that it may be lost should it become part of the airport expansion. Once back at the car I realized I had left my water bottle at GZ so it was back there again. Just before I drove off I checked cache page again and noticed I had missed 1 count so it was back down the steps and up again.
Thank you for exposing me to information I was not aware of.

Last day in Auckland, but have some hours to kill, so after my morning park run I thought I best get some more km’s in. Spying a central car park and two loops of cache off I trott. Thanks for the little adventure. Answers sent to CO, pending feedback.
Headed of at the ungodly hour of 9am to be sure to arrive at low tide. Empty\abandoned car parked at the end of the road and a fair bit of litter so the place gets a few visitors despite its remote location. Fortuitously for me there was no barrier to using the stairs to go down to the 'beach'. Made my beast attempt at DIY archaeology to satisfy the requirements, before ridding of for some more caching.
**This was 1 of 8 caches that was found by me on the 19th of 19 days in New Zealand.**
**Which also was the 72nd of 75 days that my travels thru southeast Asia and Oceania would last.**
This was the last earthcache that I visited before my departure for the long flight home to the north.
But it was close that there would have been no visit at all since there was an fence stopping the access to the stairs. Luckily ot was possible to squeeze myself between the fence and the slope. And the carefully walking down the stairs that had lost their ground support.
The tide was low so I walked around looking for trees and stumps for 20-30 minutes. Then it was time for me to head back to the car and drive to the airport since the time when I needed to return the rental was closing in.
The answers did I send via Message center on December 18th.
*During 19 days I traveled from Christchurch to Auckland in an SUV, that i also slept in during most of the nights. 5.956 km of driving did it take to visit the 351 caches that I have marked as found in c:geo.*
*Earthcaches was my main focus during the stay. And I manage to visit 106 of them. So New Zealand is right now the only country where earthcaches are my most found cache type .*

Out this way for Earthcache weekend and have been meaning to get here as this cache looked very interesting indeed. Arrived and had the place to myself, so didn't look to unusual when I took the rope out to measure the required objects.
Very impressive trees these once were.
Have submitted the required intel for your reading.

It was an early 4am start to snag a flight to Auckland and a few hours hanging around before snagging another flight to Raro - Our destination for a week caching. So lets explore around the airport while waiting.
We got here with the tide out so was able to check out these fossils. But what have we got to help measure them?? Downsized our cache kits so no tapemeasure today. The seagnoid suggested a pace of a note book but this trunk is huge and everything is very muddy. OK he has a 3m data cable - yep that will do nicely. He had his camping booties on and I had sandals so I had the job to go out to the trunks to get the info. The log was closer to the shore so we measured that at 2.75 cable lengths and remeasured with a tape measure later. Managed not to fall in the mud or get the cable in the mud thankfully. Then tried the traditional here with no luck. Thanks for the info on the cache page and for the cache. Fav from me even with the mud. Cheers

Got the early morning flight into Auckland, and have the late afternoon flight out, so Taybeedragon and I are killing time with geocaching. We walked for hours! Stopped here along the way.
I love earth caches, and as expected, this one did not disappoint. We managed to fluke the low tide, and I would have enjoyed stomping in the mud exccept that customs and plane staff would not have been two impressed. Interesting place here, thanks for brining us. Alas my tape measure was in my main back, so we measured this in units of USBChargingCable, so hopefully I can borrow a ruler to find how many USBChargingCables there are tot he metre.
Logged as a write note till I get my answers sorted and approved.

Tide was out so it was a good time to do it and last one for the day.and found it with team HRP
Squirrel Nut Case and myself met up with the Franks from Huntly. Caching today was very wet under foot and even found a couple floating. We spent far too long finding some caches but got there in the end. Team HRP (Huntly, Rotorua, Papamoa)
With Gap (of Fap and Gap), ABCDF4, and eyespyben... Our plan for the day was to do a general tidy up of caches on Puketutu Island and Otuataua Stonefields... We signed logs as Team H (Huntly) R (Rotorua) P (Papamoa).
Caching today was hard work! We expected a bit of grief, but not to the extent that we encountered. Surface flooding has taken out a big chunk of the low lying walking tracks... Another pair of walking shoes are now soaked through. Some of the ground zones have not been visited in months. We had to do a lot of gardening, pruning, and landscaping to get our hands on several of the hides. Not a lot of quick finds today!
What an amazing setting! It’s a pity that some Aucklanders mistreat the area and dump their rubbish. The outgoing tide revealed a plain dotted with clearly visible stumps and remnants of trees. The silence was punctuated by departing planes... The approach to the beach below is roped off, but we ignored the barricade and carefully stepped down to conduct our investigation. Logging with permission... TFTEC.

What a great place! Had a fab time exploring. Would love to know what all the clicking noises are in the small pools. We hear a click see a scurry and then they bury in the sand.
Out for a round of mini golf with the kids so decided to pick up a few local caches. I've been meaning to grab this Earthcache for a while and today the tides were just right... although the wind was blowing a gale We spent a bit of time examining the huge trunks and measuring them before the cold wind got the better of us TFTC!
TFTC. This was an unexpected adventure - checked my phone and there was an earthcache not too far away. What’s more about fossilised kauri. I just had to get there and have a look. Luckily the tide was just coming in and we could get to see the kauri treasure and take the measurements.
There were lots of people a long way out in the sea hunting for shell fish or some kind of fishing.
A favourite point from me.
Thanks Sp8sm8 for creating this earthcache.

Good afternoon today good reason to do some geocaching in the area. Thank you for showing us this place. Visited beach at low tide. To be honest place is full of rubbish, broken glass , etc. History about trees, and Earth cache very interesting.
We were planning a quick visit to Auckland to do some geocaching and this Earthcache took our fancy. Close to the airport and sounding a bit different.
Even the low tide was working in our favour, with the afternoon low being 40 minutes after we arrived in from Brisbane.
Unfortunately we had forgotten to pack the tape measure, but the very helpful staff at the Novotel Auckland Airport kindly lent us the maintenance man's for the afternoon.
We enjoyed a carefully chosen path along the shoreline from the steps, before finding the first of several large logs and tree stumps.
We have submitted our responses to the cache owning and enjoyed our visit to the Fossil Giants.
A favourite point from us.

This one has been on my radar for some time, always hoping to visit at some point before/after/between flights. Today was a great day for it, even the tide cooperated although I forgot to check before heading out. I have to say that I did not have the best footwear as I had slightly different plans for the weekend, with only marginal geocaching (=roadside) but it all worked out a bit differently. Luckily it was not too muddy, although I did end up with a bit of it on my shoes. Great fun, and what a beautiful spot to be! TFTC!!!
My nephew, Agazo, dragged me off to this location to have me try out Geocaching. I just retired after driving a truck for over 5,000,000 miles in the US, so I might need a new hobby.
I enjoyed the trees in the water. Thanks for bringing me here.

Needed a cache starting with F to complete the Canterbury spelling challenge so came out to collect this one tonight. Low tide and a bit of strategic walking enabled it to be done without gumboots. TFTC
Arrived in Auckland around 530am this morning with eltee291 and we started caching shortly after. This Earthcache was one of the first ones on our list. Very interesting spot. Not a soul around so early. I can't believe how fast the tide went out. It was crazy! Visiting from BC, Canada. Answers to be sent shortly. Thanks for creating this Earthcache.
Just arrived in NZ this morning from Victoria, BC, Canada with hingis20 to start 3 weeks of vacation - including geocaching of course. We started caching at the wee hours of the morning and came across this earth cache and had to do it. My third time here in NZ and I am just loving it. What a beautiful spot for this earth cache. hingis20 forwarded the answers for both of us. TFTC
#8432, 09:34,
During our holidays in Newzealand we searched some Caches.
Thx for showing this lovely place.

Together with arbor95 I am on a holiday tour in New Zealand.
We are two Germans, old friends since a long time. Together we visited a lot of other countries in the past, even before we started geocaching. [^]
For our trip we usually looking for some extraordinary caches.
Therefore we had mostly a lot of fun.
I enjoyed to visit the nice place and we have been lucky to be there at low water level. Arbor95 has already sent the answers to the owner.
Thank You very much for this geocache, for the challenge and for the maintaining.
Greetings from tripleclaus to sp8sm8.

Continuing my tradition of not checking the tide levels for tide-dependant caches but just going for them.
I was just in time before the tide started to come back over the stumps and trunks. I went down, walked along the mud flat, took the measurements and some pictures, and when I was going back up, the water had already reached the trunk I was measuring.
Just when the tide was back in, I observed some men going down in the water, probably to do some illegal fishing? [:o)] Well, at least if the sign up on the shore is still in effect, then it is illegal.
Thanks for the earthcache!

Last day of my New Zealand geoadventure trip. Caching close to the airport
A last Earthcache, a good ending to a trip that has been alot about this type of caches.
Tide was low and I could easily walk out to the stumps.
Impressive trees even now, did my measurements and had a look at the younger forest too
Thanks for the Earthcache keylev

I came by this way after several Grotty caches, I had noticed earlier that the tide was way out and that I haven't yet done this cache. So since it was a very warm afternoon and the tide was in my favour, I decided to have a go.
I always carry my gumboots in the car for caching, and naturally being a builder I always have a tape measure too! So off I trotted to GZ and was amazed to see the Kauri specimens here. Got stuck in measuring and photographing and having a good look at how big some of these trees might have been. I had a great time being absorbed in my little mission for the day and glad to see other areas of NZ where these dead Kauri's exist. The best example I have seen are at Curio Bay in the South Island, funnily enough there is an earth cache there too!

Found ... had been for walk earlier & the forecast wasn't looking good but needed to find a cache to fill in a hole on the calendar & it's International Earthcache day, so thought I'd head over & do this one ... it had been on our radar for a while but for whatever reason we hadn't got round to doing it till now ... quite a few cars in the parking lot but I recall reading something about a hikoi starting here & heading around to the Stonefields site ... anyway, I digress ... headed down to GZ just after low tide ... the beach was almost deserted, only one guy fossicking around & me ... took my measurements, & a selfie (not good) & a few other photos ... will send an email with all the relevant info ... will log this in anticipation of receiving a positive response from the GO ... Took only photos:Left only footprints, which will be gone by high tide:didn't Sign any Log ... TFTC ... #1,420 for us.
Today visits the fossil Giants! I was impressed by this size and the place! A nice Cache! Unfortunately, it caught violently in to rain and had to leave fast again! Many thanks for lay and maintain! Nice greetings
We wandered down the stairs meeting Team Welsh who had just completed the traditional cache in the area.
The tide was perfect for completing the task required. A favourite point given.
Thanks for placing this cache sp8sm8
Visited today with Tinytree24 for Earthcache day. What a cool area, had no idea this was here! Will post photo, logging with permission. TFTEC!
Out with Bennett24 for Earthcache Day. Enjoyed fossicking around the fossils here and exploring the caves. Photo to be uploaded later, logging with permission. Thanks!
After visiting volcanos features, now Ninalila and I went to the kauri fossils forest.
We had to wait a little in order to have a better low tide and it worthed it.
So many stumps and trunks everywhere, and we could even see gum on it !!!
We had to take off our shoes because it was too muddy, but it was fun at the same time.
A lot of crabs and small fish
One more fav point for this interesting earthcache, worth the detour

Such an amazing day, thanks to geocaching, we discovered volcano craters, lava tubes and now a petrified Kauri forest !
Fefe.adrien and I enjoyed visiting this beach at low tide.
Some trees are so big, our measuring tape was too small ^^! The wood and veines of gum are still visible 100 000 years later !
+ one favorite point for this unusual discovery.

Master Seth and I headed out to Stonefields today for a day of caching and not sitting home . . . . . . . the weather was nice and actually got quite warm. Master Seth enjoyed poking around in the water for sea anenomes (?) whilst I got on with carrying out the requirements for this cache. Photos are attached as I have emailed the CO my answers. Thanks so much for bringing us out here today, I had never been here before and it's quite nice, very serene.
A fascinating place. I havent been here for over 20 yrs so this cache was a perfect excuse to come back. Hardly anyone here as the stormy weather was directly overhead but the rain stayed away long enough for me to get the measurements required. Answers sent to CO.
Had some time to spare before collecting someone from the airport. Sad to say despite many years living in Auckland this was my first visit to this spot. Might be a good place to show hanjac when he arrives in August. A cache and some plane spotting will get him in the right frame of mind for his visit plus I owe him for a similar spot many years ago. Always enjoy finding out a little more about the world we live in. Tftc

not sure what the oldest fossil was here, the ones the CO wanted us to look at or me, either way it was worth the trip, even though it was totally unplanned, thanks for bringing me here, it was great, tftc

Sent an email to CO, and got the go ahead to log this, my very first earth cache. I had been in Stone fields and had got the tides just right to do this one.
I left my older dog in the car and took the young one down to the beach. I nearly lost him as I clambered up to get the 'frame' cache. while looking through the empty frame I spotted the fossils.
The dog and I scrambled back down where he went up to his knees in mud. He enjoyed his time while I measured up. This is a very interesting area. have seen fossil trees in Glasgow, but never on a beach

Completed this earthcache today with tmann421. The tide was right out so the fossils were easily spotted. An interesting area.

I had noticed this earthcache not far from the airport and was pleased to see the tide was right for a visit today. It's amazing to think of the geological processes that have occurred. Thanks for bringing me here.
We came at the right tide and had fun completing the tasks required for this Earth cache. Logging with permission from the CO.

Found it with Team FIN [janahola, kapeka, laalaa & temyllyl]
We had fun with caching few weeks here in New Zealand. Lots of geocaches and many sort of them too. We saw awesome places, weather was pretty good all the time and people were friendly and polite. Caches were pretty similar like in our home country. Of course there were some exeptions. Nice and really scenary country!

Thanks for the earth cache.
First day in New Zealand, and caching our way to motel. Logged using our group nickname FIN with janahola, laalaa and kapeka.
Lucky was on our side, fortunately it was low tide when we got here, so we didn't need to leave with wet shoes. It was really nice to see how diverse range of Earthcaches you have here, I am just a bit jealous to you!

On a geoholiday road tripping to Christchurch MEGA and around beautiful New Zealand. Our four people group (temyllyl, laalaa, kapeka and myself) from Finland used group tag FIN to log the caches.
Welcome to MEGA Finland in 5-7 august 2016!
Fortunately it was low tide so we had a chance to go see this interesting place and we had a measuring tape with us. Thanks for showing this place. Will change to found it after the answers are sended.
Welcome to MEGA Finland in 5-7 august 2016!
I have had my eye on this one for sometime. This type of thing really interests me. Was excited to see that the tides were right for EarthCache day, so after church bundled the reluctant caching kids into the car. Master 14 was hoping to get in a bit of plane spotting but it wasn't so busy today. The effort was keeping Master 12 from tripping Master 10 up and having him land in the water. Mother hadn't packed any spare clothes so thankfully all made it back to the car mostly dry. Thanks for another great learning opportunity and a visit to another I know gem. TFTC
Logging in anticipation of approval from the CO, as we'd like to earn an Earth Cache Souvenir today. Luckily low tide was at a convenient time for us, so we were able to splash about in our gumboots, measuring the fossilised remnants of what must once have been magnificent kauri trees in this area.
Logged with permission. What a neat place for fossicking around. When it was starting to turn into a mission to hire a car for a few hours I decided to take a taxi out to here - because of course I'm not obsessed, certifiable or addicted to finding things in strange places and it being International Earthcache Day etc! In the end that turned out a very good and cheaper option. The taxi driver was a bit suspicious because he'd never taken anyone out here in his 15 years of driving and couldn't quite understand why I wanted to go but latched onto the idea I wanted to take a few photos so I just went with that - whatever works. Anyway it was a lovely day to visit this quite special place. Such a pity this is no longer a living forest. So pleased to finally have the tides aligned with a time I was passing through. Last days for me in New Zealand after 3 months spent in this very nice country.
I find some time for a few more caches - so much nice caches all around Auckland !
I headed towards the airport area and I was trapped in the traffic jams... despite this, I managed to visit this area before sunset. Luckily, the tide is low at the right time !
This is an impressive discovery, seeing these trunks and stumps all over the area.
How to imagine this wood can be there since 100 000 years ! The wood didn't really turned into stone, I suppose there was not enough of the right material surrounding them. However, it is in good condition and was well protected under the ground.
The size of the stumps and trunk is also impressive - it should have been a huge forest.
Thank you for this nice earth cache.
Worth a favorite point for me !

With another day of questionable weather forecast my plans were all over the place and wasn't sure that a powertrail of Route 66 would be a sensible idea, nor any of the other walks that rae dotted around here. Settled instead to target a few earthcaches and get myself out of the 40 something amount I've been on for a few years now. Listed over a dozen and smattered a few others which took my fancy and set out nice and early whilst the rain had stayed off.
This has definitely been my most prolific earth cache day and just what I was hoping for when I set out this morning. It's sometimes nice to have a little break from other caches and get a bit of an education about our surroundings and see some cool stuff. By the time I got here it was hosing down but braved the steps which I counted and headed down to the main attraction. Stayed just long enough to get the answers then ran back to the car. What I did notice today though was hundreds or even thousands of either geese or black swans, seriously a lot!
Thanks for the earth cache here sp8sm8

Ahhh, finally - my third visit to GZ, and the first time when tides and daylight have coincided with my flight from Wellington. No problems collecting the requisite information, and enjoyed wandering out on to the mudflats in the rain, taking my measuring implement with me (not to self, had better wash off the sand and saltwater before it rusts up). Really enjoyed checking out as many of the stumps and fallen Kauri as possible. Absolutely love earthcaches that bring me to somewhere I would otherwise have never known about - I wonder how many Auckland locals know these fossilised trees are here?!?
Definitely gets a fav point from me!

We did this when we visited NZ in Feb/Mar 2015, thanks for this! Kind regards from Australia.
We had a great time finding this forest. Started with a lunch at the bench on top of the cliffs and then found our wet suitshoes, which were a good choise.
We had fund finding those old stumps and logs, and really were lucky, as we actually didn't check the tide before going there.
After having found the stumps and logs, we identificated the standing broken tree close to the staircase.
Answers have been sent and we hope for a "go"

On the ending of our trip to NZ we went by this nice beach for the final geocache on our trip, we did not know about the the tide so it was high tide when we arrived but we managed to get to GZ witout trouble or wet shoes and solved the questions, it was about sunset and we stayed on the Beach to get this enchanting moment when the sun dissapered over the horrison.
Thank's to CO for showing us this nice place and for the EC.

Celebrating earth cache day we decided to head out to complete this cache this morning. Sun was shining and the tides were in our favour, so we headed out with TOTT and a much needed coffee. Had great fun completing this cache. Never knew this about this area, thanks for bringing us here.
Third visit to this wee gem of a place, first time as a geocacher though always a new geological delight to find here
The tides were right, the newer forest giants were by the steps, and as I walked out the older giants revealed themselves. Wow, still complete with all the details of woodgrain. Started measuring and was amazed at the size of some of them. Thanks for a fascinating beachwalk sp8sm8.
I wonder what is the reason for the two "unplugged TVs" showing Indian gods propped up by the steps? A memorial?

As luck would have it the tide was high for my visit, and only a very few of the fossil giants were visible close in to the shoreline. Did what I could, but may have to visit again in the future.

I had a long weekend suffering from some back pain, so this was a logical one to go after today. I brought the family cameraman, but the memory device was left behind, so we didn't get any pictures. [xx(]
We were really amazed by how many trees were fossilized there. TFTeC.

What an awesome location. No wind. Silence and a science lesson. Doesn't get any better. Thanks.

What an amazing place to visit … extra special to see these fossilised Kauri trees as my son is named Kauri as well
Arrived in AKL for a business trip and after checking into hotel came straight out here… We drove down the gravel road with fingers crossed that Tangaroa would be on our side today and the tide would be out far enough for us to complete the Earthcache. Luckily for us the tide was right out and it was a beautiful afternoon.
I’ve never seen this phenomenon before and was very impressed, what a beautiful place. I love the ripple of the sand.

On great tour with Lemmer in New Zealnd we foundamazing spots. Thanks for all of it. Flatrate
The very last earthcache. Great spot. On the other side of the world we had an amazing experience while traveling New Zealand. Great impressions, lovely places and nice geocaches all over. Thanks for inventing and hiding. Lemmer
Its been a long time coming heading out this way to get this earthcache. Didn't even think about looking up the tides beforehand but we got to the parking spot and fortunately the tide was way out. On arrival we watched a few locals hauling a sting ray up to their vehicle bound to a couple of sticks and carried on each shoulder. The sting ray was massive! With a wingspan of 2m easily by the same in depth. Looks as if they had carried it back from the low tide mark about 1km out. There were others still netting/fishing way out there in the distance.
Anyways, we carried on down the steps and out to GZ. Wow, i had never realised that there was once a forest of kauri out here! We got to work measuring the three closest stumps to the published coords and also the length of one of the fallen trunks. Really enjoyed completing this earthcache, answers sent to CO for verification. Fav point added. This is up there with one of my most enjoyable earthcaches to date. Cheers!

We are leaving NZ today, so we left Hahei Beach so we had plenty of time to relax and find a few caches on the way to the airport.
I had spottet this earth cache to be near the airport and therefore a possibe find for today. We just needed a measuring tape - and we managed to find a little shop that had what we needed. The kids were all in, because they have never seen a fossil forest before.
Geocaching is a nice way to kill time to go geocaching and get some fresh air, before sitting down for many, many hours.
Thanks a lot for the cache
PS: I can add that this measuring tape was later confiscated in Dubai airport. It'a posible murder weapon - just so you know it... Remember to put it in your suitcase. I didn't ask about all the women's handbag with straps - no reason to provoke them

Having just landed in New Zealand, I picked up the hire car and headed straight out to this one as I was quite keen to visit this site as I too have an Earthcache in Australia based on fossilised tree stumps. I expected I might have to wade out to some of the fossilised specimens, which wasn't the case...and so each of the measurements were completed with the feet staying dry. This was a lovely way to kick start the New Zealand tour in the lead up to the NZ Mega event.

Logged with permission. Easy access to GZ at lowish tide and very intereasting to see teh large old stumps and the size of some of the logs. A windy day but enjoyable splashing about. Must have been some sight to see them being knocked over. TFTEC
Got very lucky with the tide on this one. What a beautiful spot. The road to the cache site was very full of pot holes and puddles today! Thanks for bringing me here on a short stopover. Email sent, photo to come.
