Logs
Yay, I finally remembered to log this Earthcache!.While here with Gorby and rustynz for Gorby's milestone , I wondered why I hadn't logged it back in the day!I was here with a big group of geocaching mates on 25/10 /14Nearly 10 years ago!Ric1942 sent the answers in on behalf of both of us as he had more skills than I did. Here are my photos from then and now!
Lovely day for a rangitoto trip, will message answers to CO. Thanks for bringing us here
Hard walk and it wasn't too hot a day today! 12km covered in 5hrs 40mins. Answers sent but extra photo sent with this log (no spoilers!) TFTC
Logging as note to preserve order. Will change to a find once answers submittedGreat to make the top of Rangitoto - surprisingly not too arduous a climb, though maybe because I took the gradual route from the back.Required calcs completed but will need to grab a PC to look at the GPS logs. Thanks
Brilliant EarthCache. We have done some excellent ones in NZ and this one is up there. Answers sent to ECO. TFTC
Greetings from Canberra, Australia! Today we walked 18.9km from our accommodation, to the Rangitoto ferry, then around the Island and back again. An absolutely stunning Island, the vegetation is beautiful and the volcanic rocks and caves are awesome. The views from up top were incredible, not only of the crater but for all of the urban and rural beauty that New Zealand has to offer. We had lunch at the summit and walked around to look at the war bunkers whilst measuring the distances that were required for the Earthcache. Answers sent to and approved by the CO. TFTC!
What an amazing hike! I lost my group finding the rim track length but it was worth it TFTC!#5 of the day
Our 6000th find was fast approaching and we wanted to make it special so we set our sights on this Earthcache.
Today was our second ever visit to Rangitoto Island despite living in Auckland for most of our lives. It was also the first time we have been to the summit as we decided not to walk up there the last time we visited. This was mainly due to the huge number of people visiting on that day and all of them had headed up the summit track so we decided it would be very busy up there and instead stayed down the bottom to explore the other tracks in peace.
But today our mission was the summit and we were pleased that the ferry was a little less full than last time so there were less people to contend with.
It was a nice walk up the track, finding geocaches along the way which we had planned carefully so we would be up to 5999 when we reached this one.
Once at GZ we were pleased to have the area to ourselves and enjoyed looking at the view across the crater and reading the information.
We struggled a bit with some of the questions as we are not used to using all the features of or GPS, but this has inspired us to make better use of it in the future and maximise its full potential.
We walked the crater rim walk and attempted to get accurate information, coming up with some figures which we hoped would be correct, or at least close enough.
The information was sent off to the CO who kindly gave us permission to log.
This is an amazing place and it really shouldn't have taken us this long to come here. We will definitely be back soon to explore more of the island because there is a lot to see and it will no doubt take multiple visits.
Thanks for a great Earthcache and a day of multiple milestones.
A favourite point from us.

Today was the last day we were here on the Island with team HeMaLuDy, and as this was my first time here I thought I need to get to the top.....so I set out around 7:30am for the summit, which saved me being out in the heat of the day, and dealing with many muggles that would arrive with the ferry sailings.....good choices, as I had the trail all to myself.....
Let's see how far I get....
Gathered all intel/learning, and have messaged the CO my findings.....

Out for a walk on Rangitoto today, aim was to walk as much as possible and grab caches that I hadn’t grabbed before.
Nice weather today, we ended up doing a good loop and grabbing a dozen or so caches.
Thanks to all the COs for their placements!
Cache specifics:
Always good to have a nice EarthCache at the top of a nice mountain.
Enjoyed my walk around the crater and the views from above.
Thanks for a little extra for our experience!

Spent a half day on Rangitoto finding a few caches and seeing the sights. Thanks to the CO's for the variety of caches, and nice to see some large caches in great spots. Some great views wandering around the rim track. Answers sent to CO. TFTC
We were lucky enough to be able to book one of the DoC baches on the island for a couple of nights so we worked on finding the caches around the bach and on the way to the summit (as much as the reluctant caching teens would allow. We have sent through the answers to the CO and are logging in anticipation of them being correct. Photos are included here as they are too big to email.
I write "WRITE NOTE" because it's a time when we can't go on a long adventure, so I travel in the memories of my visits. That's why I'm only stretching the Travel Bug from the adventures in New Zealand. Writing "Found it" is no longer correct, but it wasn't today.
I am sending a beautiful greeting from the Czech Republic.

Answers sent on 2 Jan following my visit to the crater that day. Fantastic cache thank you. My first visit to Rangitoto and I loved it.
For our morning walk we decided to get the caches up near the summit and then return for lunch before the forecasted rain. We just made it back before the forecasted rain but we did not make it back for lunch. Getting back at around 4pm. Did the summit ones then decided we would just get a few around the edge of the island. What an Epic walk. Have been to Rangitoto a number of times but this is the first since I started caching. Thanks for all the hides on this Island

It was a great birthday treat to walk up this volcano. We went up by the wilsons park track which got away from the crowds. The lava fields on the way were immense. It was a shame that the lava tunnels seem to be closed at present. Found with mr c on our travels from the uk thank you.
During our walk up to the Rangitoto we found some Cache, but this on was our main cache for today. We climbed the hill, walk around the rim, found the answers, sent them to the owner and got the permission to log.

Over for two weeks and while the wife is at work for the first week I get to go play. A few people had recommended that I visit the island and I am glad I listened. I had a fantastic hike. I am also glad I brought my hiking boots (they got a nice clean when I declared them on the way in!) as I had hiked on lava previously in Hawaii, so I knew they would make life easier.
Loved the walk around the rim. Gathered the information and have sent to CO. TFTC.

No Isla as left in UK, while we come exploring. A bit sweaty, by the time I reached the top. Disappointed with crater, but the views back to Auckland were great. Answers sent to CO. TFTC
Today I went for a day trip to Rangitoto. I did a lot of caching over there. After hiking up the top I had to do the crater walk twice, because I didn't meassure it the first time. Nevertheless it was a real pleasure. Tftc says Mafrika from Germany
While walking uphill we wondered why we were doing this. Somehow each vacation we spend at least one day hiking to the top of something. Today it was hot and sunny and since we have been in and up craters before... But we were rewarded with a different view than we expected or had seen before!
We then reset our trip computer on the gps and started walking around. Almost half way we discovered we apparently forgot to hit enter because the amount if meters we had walked was in km instead of m. Oops, but noticed just in time to give it a second try. Now we walked around, saw some nice views and ended up with the right circumference.

A big day on Rangitoto for us!
We had tickets for the (cancelled ) Metallica concert but the airfares were paid for and accommodation booked, so we decided to still come up for a look around (& some caching). I'm the mad cacher, Not Manly Jack (my wife) somewhat more reluctant though she tolerates me. It! I mean she tolerates it!
Unfortunately we were travelling light, with only carry on bags, so my caching gear was still in Christchurch. All I had was a pen (+ a spare) and a pair of plastic tweezers. No spare logs, bags, or containers, so I couldn't help with maintenance on any caches that may have needed it, I'm afraid.
Apologies, too, for the cut & paste portion of my logs (for those COs who have multiple caches I've found), I'll add a personalised bit below.
We approached this from the boardwalk, so I had a bit of extra walking to do to get the circumference measurement. Caused by a lack of planning on my part, of course! Other than that I pretty much had the tools I needed to get some answers and send them off. Yay! Learning!

I ended up walking part of the rim more than once due to the fact that the first time I got diverted by the view so went round again to get a more accurate measurement for the distance. Part way round I was stopped by a woman who had seen the gps in my hand she was a fellow cacher and has found most of the caches on the island. She was on the island with a school group and after a short chat she suggested I carry on ASAP if i wanted a peaceful walk as a group of kids were making their way noisily up the hill, a second group had already taken over the summit for their lunch break, took her advice and continued. An interesting earthcache and I loved the views from the top. Thanks for the earthcache the.pud

Its been many years since I have been up. The view is even better than i remember! Stunned how many people were up here as we had taken a less conventional path to the top and had hardly seen anyone all day. Walked the crater rim track to gather the info. Meanwhile this is my third geocaching-trip to Middle-Earth . And I love it! [:X]
Still there are routes and places in this beautiful country, that are on the 'discover-me' list and want to be visited and explored. - e.g. Rangitoto Island [:X]
Day #12:
A trip to the Island was already planned to be part of the last NZ-visit 2 years ago
But unfortunately, due to awful weather-conditions [xx(], the prepaid ferry-trip had to be cancelled .
So this year the island called for a visit again [^] - and the weather was awesome! .
Out there mainly for the NZ-geocaching license challenges[:o)]. But with a 16+km walk I managed to find quite some more interesting geo-treasures, just like this cool earthcache [^]!
An amazing scenery on top of the mountain, once you made it up there [^].
Thanks to the owner [:X] for maintaining this this more than 10 year old earthcache and for the lesson learned [^].
Best regards from Germany!

On our 45th day in New Zealand we stayed in Auckland. We took the ferry out to Rangitoto and had a look at this great volcano so close to the city. We had also time to look for some caches.
What a great view from the top it was and definitely worth the climb. It was a very interesting site and the walk around the crater rim was great. We also enjoyed the view from up there. We sent the answers to the cache owner.

Logging my find having sent my answers to the CO - I hope they are correct as this is my second visit to complete this earthcache having completely forgotten to complete one of the tasks last time! A great spot and our third visit to Rangitoto since starting geocaching three years ago, it really does take you to the best places.
Had a sidekick today, Bennett24 to help and that meant we had two GPSrs - luxury! I did one task and he did the other, made it very efficient.

Continuing the Rangitoto adventure with Tuolei we made it to the summit about 11AM. Enjoyed the walk around the rim and sat down for a bite to eat at the viewing area as we made our way around. Tuolei took the distance from the waypoint while I recorded the took total distance of the rim walk, but noticed it had gone up 2m as we sat for lunch so GPS must have been bouncing around a little.

I'd been eyeing up this area of caches for a while but living in Palmerston North makes it a little difficult to get to them. I was staying in Auckland for a few weeks with the family and discovered another lower North Island cacher, TwigNZ, also holidaying here. We made a plan to travel to Rangitoto for a days caching and walking when the weather was fine. In fact, it was a rather hot day but the cool breeze was welcome.
#16 of 22 today. I've just met up with my family after they took the shorter route to the summit. After a quick read of the sign I started gathering the other required information. Right, got that. Impressive crater and views from the summit. Now I have a request from Mr 5 to find a book on volcanoes so he can learn more about them.

Ein schöner Track bis zum Gipfel (Earthcache) und ein toller Blick auf Auckland. Der Krater selbst ist ebenfalls beeindruckend. T4TC from Germany
It was a wonderful day so I was not alone at the summit Great to see what nature forms in hundred of years and great to be here. Enjoyed the walk around the rim and let my GPS track the path. Wonderful island and thx for placing this EC!

We had a lot of fun finding the answers to this EC although we had to improvise a bit due to lack of a GPSr.
Unfortunately, it was very cloudy today so that the views from the summit were not as awesome as they are for sure on a clear and sunny day. Still we enjoyed our trip to Rangitoto Island very much.

THis was Pratchetfans 2000. cache. Definitly a worthy cache for this aniversary with stunning views. Pratchetfan sent the solutions for both of us. Thanks for the cache!
We visited Rangitoto to go for a hike away from the hustle and bustle of the city and to find some Caches.
The summit was the highlight of our day. What stunning views! We had some time before the boat departed, so we attempted to collect the answers to this Earth Cache. Unfortunately, we didn't have a full GPS device, so we had to improvise a bit. The answers were sent by Geocaching Message.
As coincidence would have it this was my 2000st Cache! A worthy place for such an anniversary
Thanks for this Cache!

Answers sent, Hello from Australia, found this cache on day 25 of my new Zealand holiday. We decided to visit Rangitoto today so we caught the 12:15 ferry across and were disappointed at first that there was no room left to book the tour but after finding the lava caves nearby the walk was made so much better. A great view from the look out and this has been the 2nd volcano we have been to on our tour of New Zealand, the other volcano didn't have such a good view or even any trees around. thanks for this Earthcahe and for bringing me to this amazing place. A Favorite point from me.
Visited Rangitoto island today and walked the rim. Great views from the lookout. Answers have been sent to CO. tftc.
Loved this earthcache atop Rangitoto, the walk around the rim is met with spectacular views and I highly recommend it. We did this while on the volcanic tour and had just enough time to complete this and find two other hides, overall a great day on the island before rain set in, answers sent to CO.
Thanks from Australia

Always wanted to climb Rangitoto, so stoked to finally get the chance! Super proud of the mini cachers (7,6 and 2) for their epic effort in not only making the summit (1 hour), then taking the long way home because Mummy wanted to get more caches (an extra 3 hours!). Great views, and great to see a rainbow at the summit! TFTC
Out for a day of caching on Rangitoto, me and rusty. We hopped on the first boat and arrived here at 8am to the island and took the very last one back at 4pm, so all in all, we walked a solid 8 hours and 16km in beautiful weather! We’re not mucking around either, rusty wants to get as many caches as we can today for a goal of hers.
Rustynz and I have come up to the summit via the wooden pathway but there is no rest for us, we're on a mission! So info gained, took some fotos here, then off to walk the rim. Picked up 'Bloody Red Sky' while we were at it then more fotos here and there. Called in to the bunker across the info signs and then down the mountain we go! Thanks for the earth cache, now we're about to head to another one at the caves.

On a caching adventure to Rangitoto with gorby
Its a beautiful day, its stunning. Auckland is putting on a glorious show. But.... we are on a mission finding the old traditional, and taking photos whilst we walk the rim circuit. Spotted 4 quails right of the published co-ords, and then near the ruins a Saddleback (Tieke)
Answers collected and calculated, sent to CO, so hope they meet requirements. Thanks for the Earthcache St. Quens and encouraging us to walk the rim.

Got up early this morning to meet Tramyard for our big trip at Rangitoto Island. The weather was perfect - in contrast to the previous days - so we could enjoyed awesome landscapes, beautiful views and, of course, a couple of nice and fairly hidden Geocaches.
That place was one of the highlights today. I have not often seen such a beautiful place so we stopped for a while and had a nice lunch break. In meantime we try to find the answers, was not to hard. Thanks to the owner for the quick reply and showing us this nice place!

Sunday trip to Rangitoto Island with companion of Janno216. Beautiful day on the island , blessed with good weather. We had pleasure to find several caches on the Island of Rangitoto this one was one of them. All caches found fairly quickly thanks to accurate coordinations and helpful hints. 16.2 km hike not too bad! Thanks for all placements on this interesting place ----- About this find -----> Many thanks to Janno216 for doing all hard job here with answers to CO. TFTC!
(3070) Out with 0B80B8 and the cache hound today to collect as many caches as possible between the first Ferry and the last Ferry for the day to the Island. Had a great day and enjoy this Earth cache with fantastic views of Auckland and the surrounding Island. Thank for bringing us to this beautiful place
In our holidays to New Zealand, we also visited the Rangitoto Island and the crater.
Thank you for learning a thing or two about this wonderful place.

A hike on the edge of the volcano. That was an experience on an eventful day on Rangitoto.

With the Planetary challenge currently on and the need to get a good number of caches to achieve all the souvenirs, a plan was made a while ago with DaffyNZ, to make an assault on Rangitoto Island today. Planning two weeks out, we hoped the weather would be good and thankfully today, is was just about perfect, except for the squally front that arrived just on ferry boarding time at 5:00pm.
Rangitoto was a place I had never been before, so I was keen to experience the unique geology and this caching game gave me a good reason to make the trip from up north. With DNZ’s partner along as well, we left before 5:00am to make sure of catching the 7:30 early ferry and once we set foot on the island, it was all go to find as many caches as possible during the day.
All up during the 9 hours before catching the last ferry back to Auckland, we clocked up over 33,000 steps for a distance of 22km, including almost 2km across jagged lava flows. We actively looked for 40 caches and managed to find 39 of them, with just one DNF, and this probably due to the rapidly approaching ferry departure time.
Thx to all the COs for placing and maintaining these caches and giving us an extra reason to make the journey to this neat place.
After coming up from McKenzie Bay we headed back down the Wilson track before looping back up here to the summit. Awesome views and amazing how the flora has colonized the volcanic lava so quickly. Answers sent to CO. TFTC

Good view from up here. Interesting to think that only 150 years ago there was no bush here at all. Logged with permission. Thanks!
