The spacey cache is dead. Long live the spacey cache.

Sorry Guys. This cache is definitely no more. I went up to the spot a couple of weeks ago. The hill was really badly burnt. The big log that the cache was hidden under was totally gone. There was only a few bits of ash left. I was able to sift though these bits and I found some remains of the cache. See the photo.

This area has been badly affected by the fires in the ACT. The road to area has been closed and will be closed for a least another week. I have not been able to get to the cache but I suspect the worst as the hill around it are very black. When the area opens up I will go and have a look. Sad

Found 11:110, an easy find after a stiff climb up the hill, more great views, another excellent location.

Took Buzz Light-year (“To infinity and beyondâ€) figurine and left Space suited action figure from Caught in the ACT.

Cache is in good shape.

Found at 12.15PM Quite a climb up the hill. The trail bikes made it look easy and it probably was for them. Good views from the top as usual for a Canberra cache. Nothing exchanged. Greg and Bev

Enjoyed putting our recently purchased AWD to the test on the roads in the area. After experimenting with a few really rough tracks, we finally found a way across the river. After that it was easy, until we came to the hill from hell!!! No way we're driving up there, so we legged it. The tracks at the top indicate other ways to access, but these weren't marked on our GPS?!?
Easily found, as we're getting the hang of these ACT caches!!
Didn't have any spacey things, so took jam and left R238 4WD (maybe he could get up the hill)

[No disrespect intended for heading off on a cache hunt on ANZAC Day...but my thoughts of rememberance were expressed during the morning]

An energetic and invigorating afternoon's climb is an understatement!! A 4WD or trail bike would shave untold expended calories off the trek to the cache. After the huffing and puffing had subsided, the clues made it easy to find the hidey-hole. Scanned the panorama with binoculars for some time to pinpoint and take compass bearings on some favourite landmarks (including the site for a new cache...nudge nudge, wink wink!).

Took the Army ration pack drinking chocolate sachet...err, I mean the astronaut's pre-packed, vacuum-sealed, survival energy food [in keeping with the theme of this cache Wink ] and replaced it with a chunk of genuine, glow-in-the-dark space chalk...which is likely to be the sought-after trinket for any budding young space cadets that next visit A Spacey Cache!!

WHAT A DAY!!!
Started beautifully by dropping in at the Star Wares shop at Stromlo for a cuppa & cake and to buy something spacey for the cache. Then the fun began, first tried a road in my Subaru that it shouldn't have attempted, damn near rolled it and solidly jammed it in a big rut. Got off that and tried a different route, but none my Suby would handle. So no choice but to clamber up the steepest mongrel hill by foot. This convinced my kids that Geocaching Sucks. At the top I find the co-ordinates pointing me deep into the bush. Something not right, oops, when I downloaded the local place names I must have forgotten to change to WGS 84, and that overwrote the correctly downloaded co-ordinates from a previous download. A quick mobile login to geocaching.com with my Pocket PC via mobile phone (thank goodness we had reception), to correct the co-ordinates that I'd overwritten. And Viola, now with the GPS pointing me accurately, found the cache, and Exchanged a watch and Star Wars figurines, for a holographic alien mobile phone screen protector (stick on fits any mobile), and some glow in the dark planet stickers.
Then back down the hill and off to the Tracking Station for a late lunch to top the day off very nicely. Great Cache, pity so many are at the tops of mountains, but that's where the best views are I spose. What a day, I'm exhausted but exhilarated. Another successful find 3/3 100% success (but close to failing if I hadn't had my iPAQ) Now it's time to place one. I know just the place....but will have to wait till my Geocoins arrive from Canada, I want to make this a real special cache.

When your GPS says 500m to go, don’t believe it – it fails to mention the 150m that you need to increase in altitude at the same time! Certainly those 500m took me a lot longer that the first 1000m. The fact that I’d had a BBQ lunch and a few beers down below just before I started up didn’t help.

Swapped a book for a buzz light-year.

Started at the Murray's Corner picnic area and
walked 1.5km to the cache, including the
treacherous climb to the top. Like other
groups, this climb also nearly killed the missus. Smile

The view was terrific, but the large blowflies proved to be a nuisance.

Nice walk (not). The cache contents where great, we spent ages looking though all the stickers and pins deciding on our favorites. Continued with the space theme and left behind some star wars figurines, a space transporter and a video.

We loaded up our overseas visitor on Monday, and drove out to visit the Spacey Cache. It was great! The view was super - well, all I could really see at first were my shoes, as I stood there, bent over double, panting like a fiend, after the steep climb up the hill.

Saw a few lads trying to get a Datsun to drive up the hill (nutters!) -
I left my vehicle down at the bottom, and we trekked up the washed out
rutted dirt track (the one nearest the river). Of course, being 4WD'ers, we truly
enjoyed the river crossing down below. Excellent!

Unfortunately, I didn't have anything spacey to add to the cache - so
added a treat, and swiped some of that military coffee - yikes! We
haven't actually been daring enough to drink the stuff, however!

Found it Sunday 21 October - but not by using the coordinates provided. As others have said these put you in the middle of the space complex!. Found it following the clues provided and my knowledge of the area. Almost killed the misses though walking up the hill. Pleased to see the coordinates have been updated. Great views.

Found it Saturday 20 October 2001. The First !! Rode up there on our Mountain Bikes (^$%#^$&^% Difficult). GPS put us on top of log on top of cache. Fantastic views. And what a ride back down the hill ! Coo-ee !!.

[?] Looked for the cache today but the coordinates put me in the middle of the Tidbinbilla space tracking station. Will look again soon.

By following the co-ordinates I ended up in the Tidbinbilla gift shop. Could not find the cache but I did get a lovely tea towel of Neil Armstrong
standing on the moon!
