An interesting topic for this Earthcache! I have been meaning to do this one for many years, but never quite had enough time to make the walk out here from the carpark. Today myself, Scaphoid and Toy Hunters made the walk on this gorgeous day (despite the wind!). It ended up being quite a nice walk along the sand dunes and across to the island. Watch out for the holes and cracks in the ground when crossing though.. deadly if you fell in! Thanks to Scaphoid who has sent out answer to the CO TFTC, great location! Appreciate you keeping this old EC active!
Found with Toy Hunters and Loci612 during our weekend Wollongong adventure. Toy Hunters had found this one many years ago and so it was up to Loci612 and I to formulate an answer. The description was so interesting, it gave us a lot of information about the Illawarra Lake, the little Island itself and what its fate could have been. Thankfully it's still there as it really does hold a lot of history. It was a beautifully sunny day out too so that made doing these EC's even more fun, although the wind was the funniest part as it was blowing a gale!Thank you for the EC!
Such a beautiful day for exploring the rock platform and heading out for a swim. Answers sent to CO. TFTC
Such a beautiful location, and in between the storms today, we took the opportunity to walk around and over Windang Island. The bird life is prolific and the island has wonderful geology and history. Thanks Krafty Charlie for highlighting this location through geocaching. Domsky
1049 for the tribeHappy Earthcache weekend! We've had this one in the radar for a while and today made the effort to come out into a strong noreaster wind. Fascinating area. There are wheels everywhere! Thanks Krafty Charlie for bringing us to this area, for the history lesson and for the EC. Will send answers in the next day or two.
I didn’t take a pic with me in it the sun setting was making the wreck look amazing
Now on my way south from Sydney.
What a place and what a history! Great to be here.

The second edition of the loop around Lake Illawara to find the SES caches Everest High and I missed or DNF'd during the previous loop. Of course some non SES caches was also thrown in the mix.
What an interesting history and location. This is what I like about geocaching, it is not about the numbers but the adventure. Answers have been send.

After dropping my wife off with her friends for a catch up, time to head out and pick up a couple of local hides. Such a beautiful if not a little windy day, and I enjoyed doing lots of walking in mostly deserted locations.
Wasn’t going to try this earth cache initially, as I wasn’t quite sure about it, but it was such a lovely spot on such a beautiful day, I thought I’d give it a try. So with my shoes off I sat on a rock and had a read. The tide was almost full ( great timing) so some of the aspects were compromised by the height of the water. But I did what I thought was needed and was given the ok by the CO. It was an interesting read as I have some history here with the Tallawarra Power Station back in the 80’s.
Thanks for putting this together and drawing me here!

Day 14 of our 2 week road trip south from Brisbane. After overcoming floods, a bogged car and vehicle electrical issues, we finally reached Canberra to spend a few days with relatives before continuing south for a loop around the Snowy Mountains. From there we headed towards Eden to commence the run north towards home following along the coastline.
After spending the night in Wollongong we had to backtrack a bit to pick up a few caches we had ran out of time for yesterday. Got lucky with a reasonably low tide when I arrived. Walked a circular route out to GZ and back, first out from the carpark and along the beach and then along the rock wall and lagoon back to the car. A Pleasant walk on a nice sunny day. TFTC

Thought I try my shot at one of these caches. I don’t do them very often but it was on the way back! I’ve sent through my answers. It was great to stop and look at the view and read about a bit of history in the local area. I was lucky with the tied as it was a spur of a moment cache. My attempt at taking a photo for my log was a challenge, I ended up having to shove my phone in my shoe, then I got photo bombed by a bird.. thank you for the great cache!
Day three of our caching trip and Tankengine, Kittykatch, Joolay and I were on a mission for a couple of caches in particular before heading to the event and then home for the girls, but more caching for Tankengine and I.
We traveled a lot, but it was fun and we saw some great spots.
This cache: We made the short walk over to GZ and even though it was windy and there were a few sprinkles of rain - this area was amazing. The rusty wheels were very cool.
The CO was quick to help out, explaining the geological experience you have here. But it was such a great spot so a definite favourite for that! Tftc!!!

Down at the coast for a few days. Met up with some overseas friends who were interested in finding a cache. So off to Windang Island we went. Very interesting to read about the late 1800s activities on and around the island. The old wheels are very cool. Info sent of to the CO. TFTC Krafty Charlie
A great cache with a lovely walk along the beach, perfect for a late afternoon stroll. TFTC
First earth cache in a while! I normally avoid these because I'm not too good at them! Thanks for bringing me to the island! Sorry my photo doesn't have my face, I'm a little camera shy haha TFTC
What a beautiful beach and tombolo, and surprising rock platform. Visited here on a heatwave day with Brewmaker. TFTEC Krafty Charlie
Found with EH on a very hot day. We enjoyed the walk from the carpark along the beach to the tombolo and rock platform. Quite impressive. By the time we headed back to the car the temperature had dropped by about 15 degrees. TFTEC
Great cache. We all enjoyed this. Kids enjoyed the walk and I enjoyed the history lesson. Tftc
I'm choosing to stay close to the sea breeze today... if there will be any in this heatwave. Doing a few cases along the coast whilst exploring it. This was one of them.

101 km of 805 km into my mid-week camping and caching trip.
I had no work this week, so decided to organise a loose camping trip with my brother-in-law. The car was booked the night before, and we set out at 8am, heading south out of Sydney and onto some lovely beaches and later the Southern Highlands.
I usually fully plan ahead, but decided to take it as it comes this time around. Heading into Thirroul, and driving south of Wollongong, we decided to make our first stop here. A great scenic area, we had the whole island to ourselves.
I have sent the CO a message about this one, and am logging it now. Happy to discuss it further with the CO! TFTC.

#7328. I was over in Australia in July to attend the Wollongong Mega event. Spent the night in the city and next day I visited this earthcache in the morning. Gathered the information requested but had trouble uploading images onto the website during the trip. So left all the earthcaches and virtuals to sort out until I got back to New Zealand. This was one of them.
Enjoyed the walk along the coast here and learning more about the history of this site. Interesting rock formations. Have sent the requested information to the CO. Thanks for showing me this spot Krafty Charlie, Cheers GSEL

So glad we saw this earthcache and decided to check it out.... interesting geology, a great location but the history is priceless. A fantastic earthcache that gets a fav point from us. Thanks Krafty Charlie. Answers sent.
While many people were doing power trails this weekend I headed to locations that suited me more. Like this island! It's good to read of how nature has reclaimed its ground.
This is a lovely spot that I probably would not have visited were it not for the EC. Then I went up the little slope to the top of the island to take in the views from there.

Mountains to the sea and here I am visiting a buddy and heading to the MEGA. This place is exhilarating and fascinating. I came here to visit the cache attracted by the idea of its special geology. Pleased I had the chance to visit. The wheels are surreal, littered about the landscape and demand their own story . Answer sent. TFTC Krafty Charlie.

Our first geocache found in Australia. We arrived to Sydney just when the storm was flooding the city and drove here to nearby camping area. Today the weather was much better and we enjoyed walking the beach. Awesome place, I hoped I would had my fishing gear with me. Answer mailed. Thanks for an earthcache.
All caches were found sometime between 5:49am Friday 2nd and 6:28pm Sunday 4th November.
I’ve been invited to attend a special event in Wollongong on the Saturday, well why not make it a whole weekend away with some caching to go along with it. About a month ago I started looking at caches I could find along the way and noticed that if things go to plan I could make my #1000. This didn’t end up happening. I found out when I approached the GZ’s of a few of the caches I had chosen didn’t have parking space to stop and/or were difficult to find which lead some caches into DNF’s. I did however love finding all the caches I did find and to end on an even happier note the last cache I found was a FTF (GA13111)!!! There were lots of great camos and styles of hides that I hadn’t come across before and new styles for common hides that provided me with plenty of fun and ideas for new caches. Most of the caches I found were in great condition but for the rest of them, the maintenance required is log books/sheets and/or containers need replacing, camo needs replacing, D/T and coordinates need correcting. On some of the smaller logs I signed as 2/11 JM, 3/11 JM and 4/11 JM. TB visit on all found caches over the whole weekend. I would like to thank all CO’s for the caches I found, the locations I visited and for the fun it provided me over the whole weekend!
Weekend totals:
45 Finds (41 Groundspeak and 4 GCA)
4 DNF’s and a lot of drive-bys
Cache Types: 7 (Trad, Virtual, Mystery, WherIGo, Trig-Point, Earth and Multi)
Logged with Permission
After finding the nearby Trad I made my way back to this EC. After spending some time admiring the view, I then got started on answering the question I needed to answer. When I got home the next day I sent through my answer and not long afterwards I had the green light to log as found. TFTC and FP given.
P.S. Sorry about the generic log.
P.S.S. All Caches found have been logged in order and backtracked to the correct day.

Bit of a delay in logging this one. Have visited this site so many times and love exploring the early train lines and rocky outcrops of the island. Development in the area over the years has made the trek out to the island a little longer but still worth the walk.

Logged with permission. This is quite an informative Earth Cache which I thoroughly enjoyed all-round. A really nice location too. Can't say I enjoyed sand hopping though, but it does give ye ole body a workout.
**The Day**
OCW *Little Kitten* and *DustyJapserJet*. I was keen to get in another day of caching in Wollongong today, but wasn't sure about it as I felt/sensed the need to head down the coast to see family, but the little whispers in my head won over, especially as I think Hubz was keen to go. I was intending to make more of a dent in the SES series of which I resumed at Lake Illawarra, but ended up over at *?Berageree Island* and *?Windang Island* by which time it was approaching 3pm and I had some wet, muddy, sandy young'ns to clean up. So, we just went and found a few easy P&Gs before night fell. We had a wonderful day in the Illawarra enjoying the beautiful warm sun, the water and a night view over the city from the *Pole Position* cache at upper Figtree.

Tuesday 12 September 2017 - a beautiful warm sunny Spring day in the low 20s travelling from Wollongong to Nowra on MuggleHusband's brief and unplanned 2.5 day holiday up the coast from Canberra. Found 6 from 6 caches (4 EarthCache in Lake Illawara/Shellharbour, Bombo, Kiama, Gerringong, + 2 trads in Bomba) walking up to 10kms around the shorelines.
We arrived at GZ just as high tide was on the rise but not before seeing the geological feature which stood out like rabbit ears. WOW - impressive contrast! Loved the geology, the walk around the rocks and the views over Shellharbour. Thx MuggleHusband. TFTEC Krafty_Charlie.

DieFraudiemitmuss, Lundi263, Murri24 and I made this year a very great tour together. Our first target is Melbourne. So we started early in the morning to visit the city and to make a few geocaches. We found very nice locations and interesting spots. One day we rent a car. Very early in the morning we drive from Melbourne City over Geelong to the Great Ocean Road. Along this road we found so much interesting spots, we see a great landscape, and had have not enough time for sightseeing. The weather was fine but a little bit windy. This day was very long and hard, but wonderful.
After that we visit the Grampians. A little bit rain, a little bit windy and a little bit sunny day, we had fasten all weathers. We visit waterfalls, canyons, sandstone fomations and any Look Outs. Puhhh, what a great landscape.
The next part of our journey is to explore the Outback. From Ayers Rock we take a car and drive over Kings Canyon and many other Look Outs to Alice Springs. We visit any very interesting Caches and had a great time by comfortable temperature.
Now we drive from Melbourne over Canberra, Batemans Bay, Wollongong, Blue Mountains and Sydney. We want to see so much as possible of this part of Australia. Today we started in early in Batemans Bay. We drive along the coastline and visit any Earthcaches. So we saw any nice beaches and romantic places. Once more we visit great locations.
This Cache was one of my favorite Caches, wich I would visit in Australia. Thank you very much for showing. This theme was very interesting. I have learned a lot over the australian geology.

I'll definitely have to come back and spend more time on each of them!

Found it been walking around this island for years. Not as much of an island as it once was due to the constructuon of the lake enterance wall and sand build up.

We have travelled down from Sydney to Kiama for the April school holidays, camping for a week at Kendells on the Beach Holiday Park in our Jayco Swan Outback camper trailer. Today we headed up to Shellharbour to attempt a variety of cache types, a Wherigo, an EarthCache, and some Traditionals. This was the 3rd of 8 finds for the day, and the 20th find for the holiday.
After doing a Wherigo, and then a very messy Traditional, this EarthCache was the next cache on our list. Parked the geomobile at Pur Pur Point, and then we all walked across the sand to Windang Island, and over to GZ.
Found some wheels, lots of wheels, and answered the questions that were asked. Our answers and photo have been sent to the CO for approval. We then wandered around and found even more wheels, and also some railway tracks and other rusting remains of the old quarry railway.
Thanks Krafty Charlie for bringing us to this interesting place, and for the EarthCache.

After attending the neatby event I walked out to check out this EC.
I was surpries at what I saw around GZ.I cant believe they are still in such good shape after all these years.
The weather couldnt of been better,a perfect day out here to be wondering around.
Answers sent off to CO.
Thanks Krafty Charie for the EC.
Well worth a fav point !!

My first Earth Cache
While half the fan were surfing, the young fella and I headed out to the island, the rocks at the back are something to see as well, almost looks like and old road
Thanks for bringing us here, been here so many times but never headed out to the island

On a road trip as far down as Merimbula from the central coast this weekend for some gigs. Decided to drive down myself rather than be piled in with four others + all our gear ..and so I have left early to make a good day of it by caching along the way. I have chosen a handful of NON park-n-grabs to break up this trip, this earth cache being #1 of 12 I have planned for the w/e.
We were holidaying in Kiama about 2 months back and were struck by the rugged but beautiful coastline here with its many points and small islands and rocky formations. Similar to that of the central coast but ours has more cliffs. Knowing I'd be driving back past today I figured why not do a few earth caches? Today 11am it appears I have arrived at GZ on an unusually high 1.6m tide (checked after the fact). It is quite windy and very hot (high 30's on the coast) but I'm really glad I made it out to check out this island. TFTC, Krafty Charlie.

This is my favourite beach.Have been holidaying here all my life .. Beautiful landscape and ever changing sands ..was a windy day today got a bit sand blasted but love it in any weather conditions .How do i post a picture with my log online .. i did take photos of wheels that have been moved in very recent storms from king tides
We had a brief visit to this beautiful area. Thankfully with a little time to explore.
We are so glad that the area was not destroyed by a railway.
The bird life and shells along the beach gave us plenty to explore and enjoy.
We puzzled a bit over the question but It was obvious in the end.
I'm also sure this would be a great place to go fishing as well.
Looking forward to return here soon.
Thanks for a great cache in a lovely location

Signed back in to the gc website. Backlogging a majority of finds over the last year. Started my own account and it's time to sync it out. To avoid confusion I wont change the date logged. Send me an email (via profile link) or a message in the message centre (also via profile link) if you have any concerns.

What a fantastic site! We decided to do a couple of geology-based earth caches today, as the kids and I are doing a geology project this holidays (about different types of rock and how they are formed) and I wanted to take them to see some geological features as part of this. We had a great couple of hours walking out to the island, poking around in the rock pools and paddling in the sea. As a bonus, I am an archaeology student, so the wheels were of interest to me too!
Thank you so much for bringing us here. Not being local I'd never have known about this lovely spot had it not been for geocaching!
Definitely a favourite from us!
I'll post a pic and email the answer to the question to you.

What a great spot to visit. Easy walk right round Windang Island and the remains are spectacular to see.
Found with Davaura Inc, their first and my 2nd earth cache. Enjoyed the nice stroll out to the earth cache and was surprised to see so many wheels around the area! TFTC krafty
Thanks for a fun cache. We walked out the sandy pathways just before dusk and returned to the parking area via the pier where there were plenty of people set for late night fishing just on dark.

Found it. Very interesting place with a little bit of adventure feeling and good information regarding the historischen of the region.
A nice walk on a somewhat cold and breezy morning. Email sent to CO and pictures uploaded.

Interesting to read about the history and see the old railway wheels. The nearby dyke is impressive and seems to be fractured further back at the head land. A good wind in the afternoon with the kite boarders making good use of the conditions. TFTEC

With my emailed answers being "Spot on" I had a celebratory dance... and an upload
Cheers Krafty Charlie, this one was a good one

On our way from Nowra to Sydney we visited several earthcaches. We saw very interesting places, that we would never have visited without geocaching. Thanks to all the owners for developing them !
TaurusSix and I were in the area and my 3000th cache find was coming up. I spotted this earthcache and thought it would be nice for such a milestone. Getting the last of the souvenirs for Aug would an added touch. There were a few caches between us and the earthcache and one of them looked as though it would be the mark. But a DNF at one and muggles at another meant we ended up at this cache. Enjoyed the walk and photogenic wheels.
Very nice walk to the top and along the side of the Island.
We stayed in Willara for the Weekend. Beautiful and peaceful Spot.
Had a Look at all the different Walter pools with the corals Growing in there, amazing.
Thank you

A moonlit walk to GZ then it was time to switch on the headlamp for the photo and scan of the area to come up with an answer for the question. TFTC and a bit of a geology lesson.
Despite the parentals concerns of me being cut off from the mainland at high tide (they lived in the area long prior to the breakwater days), made it safely to GZ and back without any risk of getting my feet wet. The strong winds on the day however whipped up the grains of sand, stinging against any exposed skin and filling my shoes. Once on the rock platform it was much easier to move about and explore, research and photograph… a camera is always a good cover especially when solo loitering for a cache. This was only my fourth earth cache and the fourth completed in as many weeks! Logged with permission.
During our trip from Adelaide to Sydney we had 4 weeks time to see a lot of this great country - some caches (mostly ECs) included.
A really lovely and amazing place we would not have seen without geocaching! We met nice Australian people here (too). Thanks for showing!

Initially we went to wrong side of the harbour, but soon realised that there MUST be an easier way.
Thanks for the history. Interesting geology. Would LOVE to know how it happened by being there.
Discover Me Tag thru for the distance.
TFT Earthcache Krafty Charlie, think this was Type 3 of four different caches found today - sorry about the late logging - 12/5

1800 GAFF1 While I was heading South to try and get a higher D/T cache (Eves) I was hoping to also get x 4 different Types of caches in the one day; and this was #3 of the four. The light was rather low by this time, but was able to get some photos of the wheels. Don't know how much longer they will be around for, as they are rather corroded.
Inspected the platform as directed; answers sent off (reply received).
And then back to the car to go and find a trig (which doesn't quite count as an extra Type of cache), and an Unknown.
Brought through for mileage: 12-12-12 Event, 3 Bros NSW, Auckland NZ'13, Aussie Christmas Geocoin, B 2 B Travel ingot, CII-35Z, CITO - Upper Swan and Beyond geocoin, Dixie, Explorer Tag - Jeremy, GCookie EARTH Cache 10 year Celebration Coin, GLORIA, GxPROXY Traveller - MATT, Iconic Bridges 2012, JERSEY THE WOOKI DOG RSPCA FUNDRAISING TRACKABLE, Mei letzter Schilling, cache critters Baa, Neigh Neddy, and Oink, NZ Mega 13 signature, NZ Mega 2013 GCookie Coin, Semmels first 1,000 Geocoin, Travel Bug Janklebu, X-Mas Geocoin 2011, and trackable shirts.
TFTC Krafty Charlie (Mark), Day 496 of Streak, and I still have only x 8 caches left to find within 80 km of home, as this one is 324 km! Should be able to get to 500 now.
