Love it! Such a special spot, and we would have never discovered it without starting our caching journey
I locked the bicycle at the road end, got my feet out and started walking.Nice straightforward find here, and these all generally tend to be.Love the bush in the rain. Looks all fresh and green. Of course, I am just as wet too! Dropped in a TB. I have been trying to get out of the habit I developed when I was working my streak - just get the bare minimum required - no more. Save the rest for later. When I finished the streak (1000 days!) I was working other calendar projects, so my map would only have those showing and again, I would just get the one.So I decide to go caching in Wainuiomata - there is a reasonable chance I could cache the place out. I cycled to Lower Hutt then put the bike on the bus and got a ride over the hill.Incidentally it is raining. Well, maybe just low flying cloud, which is much the same thing. Light drizzle, all day. I spent the day cycling around Wainui. After 15 finds and a LOT of cycling I got home with a mud stripe up my bum, mud on my... well, everywhere, really. Shower. Washing. And now logging.
My phone and GPS did not want to co-operate with me today, but once I had my technology sorted out it was a quick find here on my way to Kittyhawk down. Really enjoyed my walk in this lovely area. TFTC
This was a nice find this afternoon on a short family walk in the area. It was good to scope out the approach to Kittyhawk Down for a future visit when I'm better prepared for that.
We couldn't spot the cache on the way up the track, and decided to stop for another look on the way back down. This time we adjusted our thinking and made a quick find.
Sorry but we had lost the pen and a photo log is attached.
Thanks very much for the cache.

Found it!
Found on the way back using Jordanz hint in the comments. Was (of course) the last place I checked before giving up. Thankfully I found it! Cache was nice and dry and very well hidden
+ fav point for location & hide
Headed down to Wellington today to drop my parents dog back and dog sitting. Decided that we’d hand her back more tired than we got her by zipping up the creek to nab the Kittyhawk Down cache. Managed to grab a few extras on the way that haven’t seen action since 2021!
The directions in all the cache descriptions were very handy to get onto the right creek bed. The beginning of the creek there was SORT of a track but that soon disappeared. It took us 2 hours to do a round trip and we only managed to find the rotor pictured in Kittyhawk Downs description. I would definitely recommend some good boots as I got wet up to the knees and some long tights or trousers as the biddies covered us and the dogs completely

This one took the longest today. GPSr was of no help and even our cache sense took a while to kick in. We got there in the end. A very pretty spot. TFTC
Found it after walking up and down the stream... signal with the phone is 0. Hint helped a lot haha. Used handsanitizer.
Found during a trip with agcnz up Skerrets Creek He needed to do a maintenance check on his Kittyhawk Down cache before we then carried on up the creek to score Aces High #2 and returned via McKerrow Track TFTC
Submitted via Garmin Live Geocaching. TFTC. GPS was all over the place here and could not figure out which side I should be on. Thought to myself where I would have put it and sure enough there it was.
Nice quick find thanks to the cacher-friendly hint. I didn't have a pen on me so took a photo of the log. Up to look for P-40 relics from here!
My phone tried to take me to the wrong side at first, and some of the 'concrete bits I thought were solid moved under my weight. Fortunately, I didn't fall in - would that have been 'kitty hawk drowned?' All good with the cache, TFTC.
Picked up this one on our way out from Kitty Hawk Down. Found Jodanz's clue helpful once we deciphered it - we were puzzling likely suggestions on the way back down the stream and all was to be revealed! Thanks for the hide.
We decided to suss out the area here in the hopes of getting Kittyhawk Down one day- with 4 kids.
It got dark quickly up the creek, and so will come back another down to get Kittyhawk Down, when there's more daylight. Grabbed Kitty corner though

Only got it on the way back down from visiting Mt McKerrow and Clay Forks. Was quite dark on the way up and I focussed on the wrong object as the GPS was all over the place. Originally I looked an object with 4 letters starting with T but then decided to think like a person starting with T with 5 letters and quickly found it.
Afterwards I noticed that on the topo map on my phone the coords showed exactly the right spot but the tree cover made it more difficult than it should have been.

#5464. Saturday dawned fine and clear with light winds. Time to head out into the bush and do another Welly Climbs cache and get some exercise climbing the hills around Wellington. I have never climbed Mt McKerrow before so that was a target cache of the day. All up 34,000 steps achieved so the legs have been pumping. Great views in places and some lovely tall forest of rimu, rata and kamahi plus some open groves of hard, silver and black beech. Nice variety. Headed up the valley track to this cache. Took a while for the GPS to settle so while it did I grabbed the torch and went looking. Spotted the cache in the second place checked. Signed the log and replaced the cache as found. Thanks for hiding it here Oggies. The search for the kittyhawk will have to wait for another day.
The Wandering Dragons organised an expedition to Kittyhawk Down with cellojoss, the little dragons Violet Butterfly & Astro Hunter, GLAD-NZ, wb1116, and Denomynator & me. This was expertly found by Astro Hunter. TFTC Oggies!

I was close enough to this cache to give it another go but not ready to go as far as KittyHawk Down yet. As I thought might be the case, I found the cache within about 30 seconds of arrival this time leaving me to wonder why I didn't search here before. I found the hint to be no help but pleased to find it. Unfortunately the log is far too wet to write on (same story on several caches I've found today) which is always disappointing. So I'm posting a photo and claiming the find.
I've found a couple of tricky caches today but I was surprised that this was my only DNF. The most obvious hide that is consisent with the terrain did not have a cache.
I've been eyeing up Kittyhawk Down for a long time now, but the time never seemed quite right. Today all the stars aligned and my daughter we keen for an adventure, so we set off for the trip and the other caches along the track.
The GPS wasn't very cooperative here, so I just resorted to first principles and looked in the obvious spot. Worked a treat.

It was great having a couple extra caches to find on the way to kitty hawk down. It took longer to find than I'd like to admit. Made sense once it was found.

after going and up and down, we decided to go back to Wellington and finished our tour with this cache.
Thank you it was quickly found!

Found on Sunday tramp with HVTC on a rather damp day. The 10 of us then continued on up Skerrets Creek to look for Kittyhawk Down which we didn't find. We will return sometime for a further search.
Last cache of the day after a visit to the top of the hill. Very glad to find this one - the GPS was pointing me the wrong way, but my eagle eyed companion spotted the hint object and the rest is history. TFTC !
Easy find on a day out with wbond-jnr.

Found at the end of our Duke of Ed tramp. Took a little while to track down. TFTC
First of the day while waiting for the wee wiggles at a local camp. Second visit to this cache; last time i was way off but relied on intuition rather than GPSr this time and found pretty quickly. Cache safely tucked away and nice & dry. Great walk! TFTC Cheers!
dmckoJ and JohnyNopants. another find by the mighty Josh try and catch up the rest of you. very good find clues helped alot
Start of the long hike up the mountain with the Wandering Dragons. TFTC
Cache #930 - Did today with Downunder Wanderer. We made this the first stop of our trek up to McKerrow - didn't quite reach the top because we ran out of time, but a good day's effort. This one took a little while. Eventually followed the logs' advice and put the GPS down and used geocaching instinct. Turned it up pretty quickly after that, and good 7 metres from where the GPS wanted us to be. TNLNSL. TFTC!
Finally also found this one on my way to Kittyhawk down. TFTC. Sherlock Hood.
The first of the day before heading up to Mt McKerrow then on to the Clay Ridge Views cache then back to teh car past GZ with Fieldwork.
I had come past here before when I found Kittyhawk down but couldn't spot the cache that day. Coords were a bit of a struggle but spoted the bovious location.

Easy wee cache on our way up to Way to McKerrow. Dropped a GeoCoin for a visit. TFTC
GPS got a bit confused but I let my geocachers instinct take over and there it was.
Nice easy find on our way to Kittyhawk Down cache. In the company of CaligulaNZ and FiddleFingers.

Find #1189. Found in the company of agcnz & Yeetrees as we walked in for a dayhike along the Mt McKerrow track, placing some caches, and the out the other side. It was rather gloomy weather - the overcast sky hung around, but luckily it didn't rain. That sure wasn't a guarantee of the wetness of the ground though! A nice quick find - but no time to go to Kittyhawk Down today however! SL TFTC.

Finally!
Not much point in posting the coordinates as the best reading I could get was only within 18 metres!
I didn't mind having to visit this spot a few times, it's a nice place and quite a short walk from Sunny Grove (and a doddle of a walk compared with Crowther's View I did earlier!)
In view of the virtual impossiblity of getting a good reading here I still feel a more specific hint would be helpful for other searchers.
Stream was flowing well today, (even though the streams on the way to and from Crowther were quite dry): would probably not have been a good time to go to Kittyhawk Down, not that I planned to anyway!
Several trackables visited, I had to hold down the Travel Puppy as it thought there might be a Kitty to chase Another coin represents an aeroplane (Cessna 177) so I guess there is some appropriateness there.
TFTC.
(oops accidentally encrypted the log, fixed.)

#3206. GPSr wasn't an awful lot of use; relied more on info in the cache description and past logs. Found after a bit of a search. Now, onwards to Kittyhawk Down ... TFTC.
Thought I would have another go at this one, it had been bugging me a bit being an unfound relatively close to home.
Last time I had difficulties (in fact I should say impossibilities!) with GPS reception so I thought now I have a better GPSr I would have another go. Unfortunately though reception still wasn't the best but I was better able to pin down where to search. However still no luck, and I don't find the hint particularly helpful. On previous occasions I had come in from the top track because this gave me a chance to check my own cache on the way in, but much easier and quicker to come in from Sunny Grove as I did today.
I did find a spot which seemed to fit one part of the hint quite well but no sign of the other item. Cache hasn't been found for a while so will just have to put this one on watch for now.

Nice short walk on pretty good track to this point. Took a few minutes to locate the cache as GPS was all over the place. However cache nicely hidden. SL TFTC
Had to wait for the GPSr to settle down here but soon managed to spot the hint object. Found on my way up to the Kitthawk Down cache, TFTC!
On the way to Kittyhawk Down, so couldn't resist stopping for this one. Great trails. TFTC
Had this one on my to do list for quite a long time being one of the few Wainui area caches I had not yet done which was within my level of fitness. Unfortunately however I didn't find the cache.
GPS was wandering and looked at several hint items but didn't come up with the right one, GPS did seem to focus roughly on one spot but nothing suitable there. Lovely spot, I don't mind coming back another time.
With reference to the kiwi project depending on who you spoke to they may be aware of caching, a while ago I had a fairly long and mutually beneficial chat with one of the leading lights in the project. GPS is of significant value for tracking the kiwis.

Beautiful day for a walk up the river with diziet sma. Clue very apt. Tftc! Took coin.
Out on a nice afternoon on the mountain bike to get this one. Enjoyed the ride up and the the one down even more. Nice spot for a drink before heading off on my next adventure. Dropped of geocoin. TFTC
Came to here via Nikau, then Way to McKerrow. Planned to do the bash up the stream too but time and events meant we had to defer this plan. So, we'll be back this way for another visit. No bad thing, it is great country to be getting about in. Got well muggled here today and got talking to a couple who work on the kiwi recovery project in this area. They had been monitoring kiwi activity in the area and reported finding 4 of 14 residents. Note the 'keep your dog on a leash' signs. Important that there be adherence to this.
Once the muggles had cleared GZ we were able to get on with the business. Find was relatively straightforward using the description and clue. GPSr readings not that helpful here.
Cache was found in order, signed the log and rehidden safely, as found.
TFTC Oggies, found with team cacher Sweet P too

Really enjoyed the walk to this one, a great idea placing a cache on the way to Kitty Down cache as that was not on the want to do list for Mrs Geckoh, so she sent Mr Geckoh in to complete that task!!
Cache all ok, and a hint that made more sense than the last one.

Wonderful part of the world, heading to the epic Kitty Hawk down cache
I made a bit of a hash of this search. My GPSr tricked me into going somewhere I didn't need to. After a while, I checked the terrain rating and thought it was most likely to be somehere else. And, of course, it was. TFTC.
Nice enjoyable walk to Kitty Corner. Mrs bjtrekker didn’t want to do a long walk and asked how long was the walk, so the rest of team bjtrekker told her it was 200 metres… Fun easy cache. Thanks Oggies.
Good excuse for a wander to burn off some energy late in the day. Rescued the TB which has been here for a while. TFTC
Found today while in the area for the anniversary event. Always a great spot to ome back to. TFTC.
Went for a walk to find this one this morning before going on to the nearby event cache. GPS was wandering all over the place so needed to use cacher's instinct and the hint. Lots of other cachers had signed the log already today but they were all still up the valley at "Kittyhawk Down" so I was able to work independently. Signed log, TFTC!
Found today as part of the pre-event team that assembled for the 10 year event cache. Great warm up for the rest of the days caching and a chance to observe some hunting techniques of other caches.
Found this prior to the main event.. It was an easy walk to this cache, and then the fun started..Thanks for the "easiest" cache of the morning...
#399. Found with an intrepid group the morning of the big '10 Years!' event. Miss 6yr old and Mr 7yr old got to this one with no issues. A nice teaser cache before the hard slog to 'Kittyhawk Down'. TNLNSL, TFTC
Found after the 10 year event. Nice end of day visit. Meet a kiwi tracking lady with amazing information re the kiwi release here.
#1264. A quiet walk to this cache after the "10 Year" event nearby. Most other fellow cachers from the event had visited earlier in the morning. TNLNSL. TFTC.
Found along the way of our organised walk to 'Kittyhawk Down' which is just a wee walk up the adjacent creek.
Good spot, plus a handy reference point for the turnoff too. Had to look a little bit even with the number of people assembled for the find, though there was only one place it was going to be.

As a "downed" aviator myself this seemed quite a fitting cache to find. An enjoyable wet feet walk up the stream to this historic sight. It was made even more enjoyable with the company of the other cachers celebrating 10 years of Geocaching. T4TC. Kamikaze

Found as part of the 10 year celebration group, a good lead in to Kittyhawk Down further in, thanks.
TFTC found with the 10 year celebration cachers. Pretty little spot - very manageable. Done and Dusted.
Just making sure this one was all ok for the event tomorrow (yeah right). Nice little track, easy find with the help of a spanner.
5th cache of the day ,found at 2.39pm ,nice and easy find before doing the slog up to Crowthers Cache for a maintenance check TFTC
A bit of an uphill walk but very pleasant in the bush. The cache was where expected.Thanls.
Last cache for the day was looking at the caches that are further up the hill but decided that it was getting a bit late now today to go up there, will leave those ones for another day when I feel like a bit more of an exercise. Found this one quickly no issues here, nice to see that boxhill has being here too. TFTC TNLNSL (1588)

I saw this publication at lunch time yesterday but couldn’t get away from what I was doing. Checked this morning to see it still unfound so head out the door and enjoyed the brief but brisk walk up the track.
I wondered a little if this and the other two new caches in the valley had some sort of embargo on them until closer to the Event Cache in two week time, but as they had been published and had no note to say please leave for now, I decided they were fair game. Surprised and pleased to get the FTF this morning. Quite a quick find in the end , the pen I found at GZ, which I assume was the owners made it all a bit easier. Note: I would say the terrain is more 2.5 to 3 than 1.5
Nice to walk this track again, I resisted the temptation to head up stream to reminisce about Kittyhawk Down.
