Found by The Empire + HThe city hummed in the distance, but here, the peaceful flow of the Yarra River set a calm tone for the day. A temporary floating bridge stretched across the water, offering rare access to the island, and we made our way over, the bridge gently shifting beneath our feet as we crossed.Herring Island greeted us with a mix of open greenery and dense native vegetation. The island felt both remote and intimate, a hidden sanctuary just 4 kilometers from the city center. Picnic tables were scattered under large trees, and some groups had already laid out their blankets, basking in the tranquil atmosphere. We found the cache quickly, but something about it felt different. As I held the small container in my hand, I knew this wasnt the original cache that I had hidden with tackle_head all those years ago, on my birthday back in 2011. tackle_head and I had carefully chosen the perfect spot, nestled behind some rocks, hidden just enough to make the find rewarding but not impossible. The container back then was larger, with enough room for trinkets and a sturdy logbook that could handle plenty of signatures.Standing there, I couldnt help but think back to 2011. So much had changed since thenpeople, places, and even cachesbut the simple joy of geocaching remained constant. After sealing the cache and tucking it back into its hiding spot, we stood for a moment, soaking in the surroundings. It was a quiet place, unchanged by time, a reminder of all the little adventures geocaching had brought over the years. We got it done, even if it wasnt exactly as I remembered it, and that was enough. My thanks to the man himself, tackle_head for the cache! -M

Quite a few of us took the advantage of being able to walk on the water to access this cache this afternoon. An easy find set us up for the thrills of caching on The Island. Thanks for the introduction, TackleHead!

We arrived at Herring Island today mainly because the NGV had arranged access to the sculptures via a pontoon bridge for an event - PICNIC ON HERRING ISLAND -REIMAGINING BIRRARUNG: DESIGN CONCEPTS FOR 2070. Nice but there would also there would be a Geocaching event later today. What a great opportunity to find the caches on the island. This was the first cache of the day, a nice quick find - a familiar cache in a logical place. Log signed, cache replaced. Thanks tackle_head for placing the cache.

Great opportunity today to access Herring Island by temporary pontoon bridge to attend an event and locate the caches on the island. Very enjoyable exploring the island. This was our first find for the day. TFTC

08-Sep-24
With the lure of an event on Herring Island that didn't require us to cart a kayak into the city, Chook joined forces with Sunset62 and micaparamedic, catching the train in and enjoying a leisurely walk there via a handful of caches.A quick find by sunset62, it was one of the many finds that this cache had today, thanks to the above accessible event. The cache notes were appreciated, as at each sculpture there was not a lot of other information. TFTC tacke_head.

Today I planned to walkover to Herring Island for an event (not an easy task walking on water you might say) and I mentioned it to my caching buddy GemmaSistema. So a planned was hatched to catch up and do some caching before hand.I picked her up at a station and soon the day of fun and laughs started.Caches were mainly picked by if there was parking close by and also how much walking was involved. After touring the finer suburbs of Melbourne we have made it where we wanted to be and that is on an island.I mentioned that I was walking to Herring Island to my son during the week and he laughed at me.Photo was sent and the apology came.I have walked a couple of these wobbly bridges before. This one was the first one we came to as we crossed the bridge.Met up with a few other cachers as we were signing the log.Now to find a few sculptures on our walk around the island. Thanks tackle_head TFTC.

08-Sep-24
How convenient it was for the NGV to organise a temporary bridge on to the island to make getting there a whole lot easier... and how convenient it as that **ConnieandRick** took advantage of the NGV's offering and organised an Event on the island... when put together I, like many other cachers, grabbed the opportunity to wander across the water and visit the island... first visit in my case... and hunt out the caches that are there. Found this one before heading off to the event. Thanks **tackle_head** for placing this cache here.

08-Sep-24
Attending the event on the island today (as everyone else here has mentioned!) this was our first stop and an obvious find. Especially when there were 3 others already looking for it when we rocked up LOL!Thanks for hiding and keeping it going tackle_head!

Spring Victorian Incursion 2024.Day Ten: The inner south east.Weather: a rainy end to the day.One of five caches (includes an event) found on Herring Island today thanks to the NGV fronting up the cost of a temporary floating bridge to the island. Talk about perfect timing for my this extended visit to Melbourne. Ive just set foot on the island at this point, Ive not yet run into any other geocachers, and so I had to do all the work for this one by myself. It wasnt hard. Thanks for the cache tackle_head. The cache notes are an interesting read.

I dreamt about the Herring Island geocaches for a long time before leaving the UK. A little planning was required in order to reach the island. When the appointed day arrived, we made our way to the island in the delightful company of our new friends. The sculpture park was awesome. Herring Island is a truly special place where amazing geocaching memories are made. Awarded a favourite point TFTC

Today was paddle day! Who said you cant kayak in the middle of winter. I teamed up with OzHockeyChick to tackle a couple of suburban kayak caches before the main event on Herring Island this afternoon. We arrived to see a number of cachers unloading their cars and carrying their kayaks down to the landing. A bit of a drop off made for a tricky entry but we all managed to make it without getting wet.Once on the island, we gathered at the event HQ before setting off to explore the caches on offer, of which this is one!We almost forgot this one as we arrived back at the kayaks. Phew that would have been a kick yourself moment. With the names in the logbook we set off for our kayaks and to rejoin the mainland.A big thanks goes to tackle_head for taking the time to add Herring Island Sculpture Park to the geocaching map for us all to find and enjoy.----------------------------------------------------------Are you ready for Victorias next big event?Join us for Victorias first ever *Block Party* to celebrate 25 years of geocaching.**When:** March 22 - 23, 2025**Where:** Hume Global Learning Centre, SunburyLog your will attend at [**GCAP417: The Sunbury Event** ](https://coord.info/GCAP417) Visit our [**Block Party website** ](https://geocachingvictoria.com.au/the-sunbury-event) for more details on the exciting lineup of events and activities as they are released!

Yesterday we came home pretty late after a brief evening in the suburbs of Melbourne and planned today as the day to walk the city center with Lauras muggle friend Julia who we flew down under to see. She was nice enough to take most of the day off, which meant that we could spend time walking today in the city and not only get our rings closed, but also to see a bit of the downtown. After a longer train ride, we made it to the Yarra river, along which we walked for some time. After several DNFs, we left the pleasant river walk and headed to the gardens and towards the local grotto. After success there, I decided to part ways with the ladies and let them spend some quality time together, while I returned back a bit and towards the little Herring Island. I noticed the few caches here which seemed like a fantastic way to spend some time. I took the bus down and then walked to the park ferry dock, which according to a quick online search was running every 10 minutes through the day. Alas, another problem encountered during the day. The ferry was out; the river seemed a little drained with works going on. And there went my trip to this little island to see the sculptures and visit the four stashes here. To pour salt in the wound, the nearby cafe didnt have beer or any info about the ferry, and the nearest stash in walking distance was a T5 tree climb, for which I didnt have the equipment (as it didnt fit in our carry on). Bummer. This wouldve been a fun little trip. But it is a T5 after all...Thanks nonetheless tackle_head for as least the listing of your Herring Island Sculpture Park stash; we were glad to visit it and spice up our Thursday while down under in ????Australia for our spring break, visiting from slightly-distant ????Myanmar!

**29/03/2024, 10:59:00****Find #5728****Traditional Find #3440**I'd been wanting to do the three caches on Herring Island for quite some time. Yesterday I realised that the punt would stop running after this Monday. Surprised Easter had crept up on me without me noticing. [:o)]I decided Good Friday would be a good day to attempt them as the roads should be quieter than usual, at least early in the morning. I couldn't get a park when I arrived around 9:00am so I went to the Shrine to do the earth cache there. When I returned, there was ample parking. SteMicMitSar joined me around 10:45am and we made our way over to the island.Steve had already found this cache so it was just me and it was an easy find. I hid it a bit better than the last finder. We also noted that there are racks for up to six kayaks here. That's good to know for future reference.**Thank-you to tackle_head for placing this geocache**

Found by Mary and David at 11:15. We'd arranged to meet McLookers, micaparamedic, muzza and Team Crackers at the Como Landing for the first ferry at 11:00. Arrived early and jagged the parking spot directly opposite the path down to the landing. Quite a few overseas tourists arrived for the ferry too, and it took several trips to transport them all 12 at a time. Glad it was free. Haven't cached here for more than 20 years. Our thanks to tackle_head.

#21668 @0810In Melbourne for a few days for work. I came equipped with a kayak, especially to grab the caches on this island. This morning was my best opportunity. The hard part was finding somewhere to launch. A quick find here once on the island, which I had all to myself. TFTC.

On secondment to Melbourne, Australia, combined with short holidays here and there. SmileDay 28/74, Sunday. Today I visited the lovely Herring Island. I used the punt service (it was a bit after 1 pm when I went to the island and I was 98th customer of the day and there was still time until 5 pm, so the service is definitely popular) so it was easy this time of the year. I enjoyed my day a lot. I visited all the caches and the art gallery too. I loved the place! SmileThis was the first cache today and a quick find. Thank you for the cache and greetings from Vaasa, Finland! SmileLogged with [GCDroid](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gcdroid).

Today, we wanted a family outing, and I suggested Herring Island. It's a place I've wanted to go for a long time, but I just haven't got around to arranging it yet. We took the punt over and strolled around, enjoying the sculptures and collecting the geocaches. Huntress may have recruited some new geocaches in the Art Gallery. The was the first find of the day and 999HK sotted it very quickly. Thanks for the cache, Tackle Head.Hunter

I've been meaning to explore Herring Island for a couple of years but I've never been in the area the infrequent time the punt is running. Today with a free morning and a perfect summers day it was the optimum time for a wander. After grabbing the multi this was simple find on the way back to the punt. Thanks for the adventure tackle_head.

I loved it. A fun walk around the island

Nice, easy find on a lovely Australia Day. All in good condition. TFTC

20-Jan-24
I'm required in Melbourne for some work on a Monday. And I figure, that's an ideal opportunity to fly down early and spend the weekend geocaching and enjoying the suburbs. Flight delays and a well-past-midnight arrival means my start today was nowhere near as early as I'd hoped, but I'm still keen to complete as much of my plan as possible.Sometime late last year I heard about the Herring Island Sculpture Park and quickly added it to my to-do list when I next could. Then I noticed the punt across operates during the summer, which lined up perfectly. As such, it was the first on this trip! After a reasonably late coffee and a tram ride out to Williams Road, it was time to start the pedometer towards what would undoubtedly be a huge number for the day as I walked north. The punt had just dropped off a few people as I arrived and I was welcomed aboard for the short trip across this muddy boghole anabranch of the Yarra. When I realised there was also geocaches on the island, I thought I'd grab this first, but muggles made me abort and do the walk around the island first - which is fine by me. Having enjoyed my time and feeling a bit done, I headed back down towards the punt. I thought GZ was in full view of the driver, and instead retired to the nearby seat which is a bit secluded.Perhaps some help in the description. It's not at all helpful and just a bad copy/paste job from the Parks Vic website. My phone had settled and pointed to a less obvious hide and could take a few steps and a quick find at 15:50. Rusty but signable. Replaced as found and time to get the ferry back to the rest of Melbourne! Thanks for this geocache, tackle_head.

An event in Fed Square dragged me back into the city for the nth time this week, this time with buhfuhguh in tow, as we embarked on a fairly high-terrain caching day - especially peculiar given our largely urban environment! Some big targets were finally achieved with the aid of the ladder, tree fishing pole, whatever else was lying around in the car (toll road tag included), and the Herring Island punt!I've been meaning to head to Herring Island forever but have been limited chiefly by the punt's running time - I always seemed to be in the area on a summer weekday or winter weekend which yielded at most one of the two criteria required for it to be operational. But today lined up perfectly and we made it a priority to visit the island (though not before getting a bit too close to 5pm for comfort after burning most of the day reciting poetry in Docklands). The small journey across the Yarra on the punt was lovely and we were soon a little closer to this traditional cache - although, crucially, on the right side of the river this time!Only a short walk was required to reach a likely hiding place where the cache was duly retrieved upon our arrival and I was able to add my name to the logbook once the container decided to open. Thanks to tackle_head for placing this one here! Smile

Having missed out on last year's event on this island, I had earmarked these caches and placed them on my want list. The punt hours and days, l think, have changed over the years, but finally, it's operating again, so a plan was hatched with Rebel Acts and Omegaman to venture out on a caching expedition to Herring Island. In true Melbourne fashion, the sky darkened, and the heavens opened up, but the sprinkling wasn't too bad. We had a great little walk around the island finding these 3 caches, including this Trad. I for 1 was disappointed that the island was so small, (would have enjoyed a longer walk) some very interesting history and great little punt ride.

Out and about with My good caching friends Omegaman1971 and tiz13, there are always plenty of laughs while we are turning caches into smiles. This is one of the caches found today. we have had a trip to the island on our to do list for sometime and today we finally made it, it was a quicker walk around than we thought. Thanks tackle_head for the cache.

A trip to town and beyond. The SS inflatable T5 was packed and put to use again for these ones on the island. Lowish water levels made for a quick but muddy landing.
This was very close to the landing stop so a quick detour, find and sign. TFTC

I have had my eye on this island for a while.
Knowing that the free punt was on it's final week for the year, as we will be away next weekend, and knowing that was our best chance of getting over there we weren't going to miss the opportunity.
My sister and her husband are staying with us, so what a great outing for the day.
We took the punt across and explored every part of the island, including the gallery which was open and very enjoyable.
Great to see this cache back online, so thanks to the crew who played a part in getting it back up and running. A straightforward find at GZ.
Thanks tackle_head and the maintenance crew.
A great day out.

Bunadoorian and I enjoyed our trip to Herring Island today. We enjoyed the walk all over the Island and was surprised to see many groups enjoying a picnic on the grounds. I found this cache first - the second time today - which is a novelty as Bunadoorian has been finding most of the caches recently. TFTC and for bringing us here tackle_head.

Thankyou for bringing us to this beautiful destination on a boat ride up the river.

26-Mar-23
A handy cache if the punt landing hadn't been temporarily moved due to recent flooding damaging the old landing. Which meant that Grub62 and I were forced to visit all the sculptures on the island. The hardships we have to bare for Geocaching. Saying that it's still one of the easiest difficulty 5 caches I have done so I should not grumble. To be fair even Grub62 and I were able to access it unassisted. Thank you tackle_head for this cache and TFTC.

Tick tick tick. Tick 1 - The journey was worth it. I paddled down here from Bridge Rd. It was a bit further than I expected, but the fancy houses kept me distracted. Tick 2 - the destination was worth it. I found this first, but the sculpture garden was well worth a look. Tick 3 - the cache was quickly found in excellent condition. Thanks Tackle_head for a good afternoon

Headed over here today on a spur of the moment excursion before the free punt stops for the rest of the year. We loved all the sculpture and felt a million miles away from the city. Such a hidden gem of a place. Used the hint for a quick find.

At last, first smiley for the day! Today we must have left our eyes and heads at home before heading out to do some caching

A Multicache on the island was published yesterday and there was talk about heading out last night for an FTF. We were out as we had just arrived home from yesterday's journey to Melbourne. A chat with Mr Sims_family and a plan was hatched to head to Melbourne this morning.

So after picking Mr Sims_family and the kayaks up, we headed into the big smoke. We arrived near the launch point and readied the kayaks. Boy, the tide was low, so it was a decent drop into the kayaks, and the Yarra looked like it was living close to its reputation of being upside down.

We made our way across the 40 meters to the Island and noticed a deep set of footprints in the mud leading up to the path. We had our suspicions, and they were soon confirmed when we became aware that we would be second to the prize.

While we were on the island it made sense that we pick up the other couple of caches on the island.

We were heading back to the kayaks and this one was nearby. We made a nice quick find of a cache in excellent condition.

Thank you for this Traditional cache tackle_head

This was a nice little find on a day of rides. Had a smooth ride along the Yarra Trail to the nearby cafe for a snack then a short punt across the river to this lovely little island. I'd never been here before so it made for a great day of firsts. The cache is in good condition. SL TNTL TFTC.

Takeing a punt on having a great day out! Herring Island has an amazing natural environment with a variety of sculptures on display. The best time to visit is when the Herring Island Summer Arts Festival is on - Mid Jan. to April.
( Check details on line).

Disappointed - this is not the usual type/standard of placement by this CO - looks more like a throwdown!

Thanks to tackle_head.

When we'd last visited here, it was pre-caching for us and our eldest child was a just a baby and the other two were just vague plans for more children....

Our eldest is now 16 and he is interested in Art, so we thought it would be a nice day for a re-visit, given the punt operates on public holidays. Managed to snap a photo of the Roulettes doing a fly by as well.

The gallery was open and we got to check out the sculptures on display - there were some quite interesting ones.

Of course we had to grab this cache whilst on the island, and it is the first T5 we have done (caching since 2016)!

TFTC tackle_head and giving us another reason to visit.

Cache found and log signed with dalerious Razz whilst attending an event on this unique island.

Thank you to nirgalagrin and n0w0ries for replacing the cache and keeping it in play Big Grin, and to tackle_head for allowing them to do so.

What a jam packed weekend dalerious and I had. Actually, we had two full on weekends in a row. This weekend we got to undertake some awesome "water" based caches, one of which was an event. This was dalerious's and my first T5 event Twisted.
What a start to 2023 and I hope that this trend continues Cool, because we have got some serious challenge caches to fulfill and we ain't getting any younger.

Busy busy! New Year's Day and a caching event on! I must confess I didn't have much time to enjoy the sculptures as time was tight. Now I know what it's all about I'm going to come back via the punt and enjoy the wander.
Thanks for the cache tackle_head

This was our first trip out to Herron Island so everything here is new to us, including this 2011 T5 cache by tackle_head. [^]
Having realised the cache placement had been altered before looking where it was no longer, my partner catnap777 and I made a wuick find and were all too happy to be first to sign the new log sheet. Red Face
TFTC tackle_head, and thanks for getting it up and running again in time for the New Year's Day T5 event. Happy2023.

we brought an inflatable raft
we borrowed it yesterday from a friend
they’d bought it cheap from aldi years ago and it sat unused in their garage
they were happy to palm it off
they made no promises it was watertight

so we came prepared
with duct tape and bathers and a can-do attitude
we pumped until the pump broke
we huffed and puffed some more
but the vessel became more duct tape than raft and still the air escaped faster than we could puff

thankfully, there was a kind kayaker with a spare seat
so the backpacker picked up a hitchhiker
(thanks again for the ride)

we made it across to the island
safe and sound and dry
and no duct tape in sight

Snips and Co invited me for the night to attend the event here and this gave us an opportunity to go for a wander around the island seeing some of the sculptures on the way.

There was a group of us when we made it to GZ and the cache was found quickly, in good condition.

I managed to hitch a ride back with n0w0rries and we took the long way back cruising around the island.

Thank you for the cache here tackle_head First cache for 2023

Found with CJDenno and many other geocachers. We were going to Herring Island to attend a nearby event and decided to get some caches with some other cachers. We arrived at GZ and then looked around for a bit prior to finding the cache which we found not long after. We all logged our names into the logbook and then walked to the event. The cache, container and logbook are all in magnificent condition.

I visited 4 TB

Visiting this island has been on my wish list for decades, and what better opportunity than a geocaching event.
As T & an E of iTEEM are working at Avalon Airport this week, we are kayakless, but a generous offer of aquatic conveyance from Crustyvarmint, and a suitably late start time meant that we were able to attend after work.
Paddling the tinny across was warm work on a hot night, especially as we went the long way around, but at least it meant we could say we have completely circumnavigated the island.
Some of the sculptures are quite interesting.
Great to catch up with some familiar faces and meet a few new ones too.
Finding this cache was a case of follow the trail of searchers to the likely spot. It wasn't as camouflaged as I'd expected, making for a quick find and sign.
