A trip over the dittecch and I'm in the land of the big white cloud. Yep, Made it to Christchurch and onto Dunedin for a week of caching.DAY Three, (24/10) yep, its the same crew of Bluewattle, Snickersallan, Wollaston and myself touring around town. Today we are doing a series of challenge caches, some solved puzzle caches and a few multis. It's a long drive to Diamond Harbour and Deep Gully Bay before heading over to West Melton and surrounds to get some of the eclipse series. Had a few others on the list as we passed by collecting some of Christchurchs cool caches. There are a few set target caches along the way.The are some amazing areas of Christchurch and I have enjoyed driving around and seeing the fantastic sights, thank you for showing us around. All logs were signed and all caches replaced as found. Thanks for the placements.

Touring around with a lovely group of Aussie geo friends for a few days in Christchurch, picking up some solved puzzles, and selected others on our to-do list.Very unique earthcache just on the side of the road.Answers submitted by Wollaston on behalf of our group.Thank you, TheWanglers, for placing this esrthcache.

Viewed the formation and collectively worked out our response with Chamad, Snickersallan & Bluewattle. This is my first ever trip across the ditch. After a week of caching around Brisbane and at events last month with other Geo friends, I couldnt pass up the opportunity to hop on board for a NZ Mega adventure. Another great day for caching. 10:45FITW GreenMenaceFound on a dog walk.Somehow this EC has remained unexplored for me for the 8 years I have lived and cached in Chch.Well, the annual Earthcache day is the best time to finally investigate what these dikes are about! We made a nice morning walk out of this and parked up at the bottom of Harry Ell track. Perfect day for it, and we walked up in no time. Many people and dogs put on the tracks today. The GZ is quite a hotspot for car and bike confluence so you have to be very careful walking around here.I came prepared with an 8m tape and measured away. Answers sent. Next year it will have to be a trip out of town to get another one unless there are new ECs out!Kia ora! Paldies! Thanks for the cache, TheWanglers!#11409

**Day**Doing a tour in and around Christchurch by bike. Nice and easy going on the flat terrain. Just had the webcam cache as main target and doing a lot of tradies and labs along the way. After a while the idea came to make this my day with the most different cache types found. Unfortunately I could not see an event for today but other than that I found: tradie, multi, mystery, lab, webcam, virtual, letterbox, wherigo and earth. That smashed my previous record of 6 and set the new record to 9, very nice! Thanks to all CO's for a lovely day of caching!**Cache**And finally, to top it all of (literally) I arrived here for the last cache type: earth cache. Quite late in the day and after dark but determined to make it work. Complicating factor was that there were a sort of street races going on with cars racing past the rocks I had to study. Nevertheless, I gave it my best and sent the answers to the CO. Afterwards, finally time to go home (to the motorhome): a nice decent and another hour of late night cycling. Luckily the bicycle infrastructure of Canterbury is great!Tftc & fp for making this my final cache for the day and 9th type for the day. Also, interesting to know more about these formations, thanks!

We came to do this earthcache today as lovely weather. Never stopped before to notice all the detail here. Amazing what you see after reading this cache description. Busy today with cyclists but one couple stopped and kindly took our photo as the selfies kept covering the main proof of being here lol. Thanks for the education and this earthcache TheWanglers.

Sir Belac, Nanzie and I came up here for Earthcaching day, we took a number of measurements and sent the answers off to the CO hoping they are correct. An interesting spot, we had never heard of dikes until reading the description on our way here. It was a very busy spot with cyclists making the most of the beautiful weather. Thanks for the earthcache TheWanglers

We went up onto Summit Road to do this earthcache for International Geocaching Day. While we were there we met a Geology Graduate who had also come to see this interesting phenomenon. He helped us to understand this geological feature and then he continued up the hill to see if he could see where the dike continued. We told him all about geocaching and he sounded keen to look into it.

08-Oct-22
Done in support of international earthcache day. Met a geologist at the site, who was interested in geocaching. Good exchange of stories. TFTC

13-May-22
We headed over to Diamond Harbour today, picking up a number of caches here and there. A great day for it and lots of pleasant scenery along the way! Detoured to this one on our return leg. My “caching companion” pinocchio59 did most of the hard work on this one, being somewhat more interested in earth caches than I am! The answers have been sent to the C.O. #5065. TFTC.

13-May-22
An interesting geology lesson that required careful reading of the description to be able to accurately answer the questions. Having said that, I have sent my answers off to the CO and they may not be accurate after all! Anyway, it was found on the way back from a trip to Diamond Harbour - another great day out geocaching. TFTC Smile

**This was 1 of 10 caches that was found by me on the 2nd of 19 days in New Zealand.**
**Which also was the 55th of 75 days that my travels thru southeast Asia and Oceania would last.**

This was sure an dangerous place to stand in the evening after sun set. There where namely a lot of rally drivers passing by in very high speeds.
So it took me 20-30 minutes before I had observed and gathered what I hope to be enough.

*During 19 days I traveled from Christchurch to Auckland in an SUV, that i also slept in during most of the nights. 5.956 km of driving did it take to visit the 351 caches that I have marked as found in c:geo.*

*Earthcaches was my main focus during the stay. And I manage to visit 106 of them. So New Zealand is right now the only country where earthcaches are my most found cache type Cool.*

Answers to earthcaches and virtuals did I send in via Message Center close after the visit, or when this log is written in March 2019.

Really enjoyed doing this one just before dusk. Driving into town there was thick fog/mist and I thought it might be possible to get above it at Sign of the Kiwi. Near GZ, there was a stunning temperature inversion over the city and the Harbour on the other side. Picture looking towards Charteris Bay attached.

Responses have been emailed to the CO.

Many thanks - really nice EarthCache.

Decided today was the day to get this one sorted. With Mr BP in tow for measurement help, we did all the groundwork as requested. Took a photo and have messaged the CO. A few cyclists and a couple of runners probably wondered what on earth we were doing. TFTC and the learning experience

Visiting from Brisbane with Slow Puncture for the Oamaru Geofest, and we're seeing all the wonderful sights the South Island has to offer as we travel along. Day 4: We said farewell to Oamaru and headed North in the drizzle to Christchurch, with a few sidetrips along the way.

What a fabulous example of dykes, I've seen a few before in my time but quite this interesting! Answers submitted to CO

Monday. Slow Puncture has teamed up with Orange Crew to make a Moreton Bay assault on the Oamaru Geofest. Day Four saw us travel from Oamaru back to Christchurch, with a couple of loop diversions on the way out to the West. Well, it certainly was an adventure to make it up here. On the last few bends we almost got wiped out by some idiot speeding around a blind corner where there wasn't enough room to safely pass. Twisted

At GZ we observed the geography and made our observations.

This was the 9th of 37 caches found on today's trip.

Thanks ***TheWanglers***, for showing us this place. Smile Answers have been provided to the CO.

We certainly found out alot about volcanic rock and yet again would have had no idea as we drove past of the significance of such an ordinary rock wall found with team_macdonald TFTEC

02-May-17
Rayzr 2 has sent through the required info.
Thanks for bringing us here.
I had no idea there was this much info in the rock formations from volcanic activity, just another one of those things that we take for granted and if it wasn't for caching would probably have never learnt. Tftec found with Rayzr 2

An interesitng subject for the Earthcache at this nice place. We visited this spot with Murazor during our New Zealand explorations. Thank you for the lesson and for the EC!
Greetings from Krakow, Poland!

30-Dec-16
Hmm, this was a tricky one. With Lady Murazor we have quite a few EarthCaches found yet here we were puzzled; we were looking at the stone wall not 100% sure what we see there. Is that part basalt or not? Is that thing a dike at all? Maybe too many impressions per day made our heads and eyes spin... Nevertheless we did our best to send our findings to the CO. Smile

Thank you for this EarthCache and greetings from Kraków, Poland.

Logged with permission of CO.

Visited this interesting location whilst on a caching loop around Gebes Pass and the Summit Road. I've driven, cycled and run past this geographic feature many times completely oblivious to its significance and what the different sections signify.

Many thanks for creating the Earth Cache and explanation.

A rather wet day for EC day but a team effort sorted out the tasks. Having driven past this area many times it was really interesting to find out more information about the geological phenomen.

09-Oct-16
I wasn't sure if I would be able to get an earthcache today without getting soaking wet. Luckily the rain stopped and the sun came out and I was even able to convince a friend to come with me today. As we approached gz we saw some familiar people looking at the dikes and soon joined them. Funny I have been past here several times before and never noticed the rocks. Tftc! Answers have been sent.

Took my geocaching parents out to do their first Earth cache on EC day, I felt it was appropriate as my parents are nearing ninety that due to pouring rain they could sit in the car, write down the measurements and Google any further research as needed. All went well and had tasks completed quickly so headed for GB for lunch. TFTC really interesting to find out a bit more info on volcanic activity.

09-Oct-16
The end of our run along the tops, KR and I had been on a bit of a hurry to get down to the other earthcache gathering today in the bay so it was a quick measure up (in theory). Met another cacher here, easily identifiable aren't we - especially with a tape measure in hand. Cheers, something else I didn't know tucked away in the recesses of the mind for a trivia night.

09-Oct-16
Stopped at GZ and had a 5m tape, so all was good. Another car pulled up and jess.daphne popped out to do some measuring too. My natural history of the Banks Peninsula area is expanding with every Earthcache. Cheers for the stop TW.

Kiwi Moose and I had a wet sunday morning drive, followed by a sunny afternoon. Nice.

Thanks to the CO's for the hides. Cheers.

With a blustery cold wind blowing had a picnic lunch in the car at GZ. The dykes are pretty impressive.

* Interesting geological feature from 12million year old Lyttelton volcano. 6 metre trachyte intrusive dyke with two thin basaltic dykes within it.

07-Jul-16
Went out on the seventh to get a few more caches, and drop off travel bugs before heading home. It was a bit nippy for geocaching, but it was worth it. Thanks for the cache.

11-Jun-16
Its was the day before night shift and I decided to make a run and do the bits for this, D'oh don't have a measuring tape, but that's ok the GPS has a swanky measuring doofer on it. I consulted with the reading and uncle google helped with some diagnosis to get the right rock type. This was a nice spot and in Winter a nice day, hard to believe that 4 years ago this spot would have been knee deep in snow.
Sent the answers off to the CO, who confirms I was right...whoop whoop TFTC and sorting the science, who knew I would learn stuff form this cool game, hobby, obsession??

Down this way overnight and as I was passing the EarthCache I just had to stop and do it. Always enjoy the learning experience which goes with an EarthCache and this one was no different. Completed the tasks between cyclists and sent those of to the CO. Shame somone has chosen to tag these rocks!

Thanks for the EarthCache TheWanglers - Gets a FP for the additional info I have learned about volcanoes as a result of the cache.

Well what can I say, what a tremendous view! Gunnei69 and I ventured to GZ and made our observations. Gunnie69 collected the answers and sent them to the cache owner for verification.

Cache was found on Day 4 of the NZ MEGA 2015 caching trip, as Gunnie69 and myself started the day by heading up the very scenic Dyers Pass Road, for a couple of caches and some magnificent views. We were then joined by Green Geckos, Kyzabra, Jinta29, tealby and urch, with the aim of collecting 12 different cache types in a day, that stretched from Kaiapoi to the centre of Christchurch! Big Grin

Thanks TheWanglers for the efforts of putting out the cache and making it an enjoyable day! Big Grin

Cache Type #1 for the day.

25-Oct-15
A brand new day on the Christchurch Mega Weekend and Ghostgums had planned, like many others, to chase 12 different cache types in one day. First cab off the rank, we arrived up here nice and early, when the sun was not long up, but the air was still crisp... [^]

With a convenient car park close by, we wandered across the road, avoiding the keen cyclists and some joggers as we drew the tape out and took the required measurements. Quite impressive geology at this point and I don't think I have seen quite so many dikes in the one short piece of rock face. Nice... Smile

Obligatory pics, measurements and notes taken, the answers were forwarded to the CO and the green tick received. Another neat earthcache that we enjoyed doing. Naturally, we paused just across the road to take some pics from above, before heading a little further up the hill for some more angles.

A great location and nice earthcache. A favourite from me.

Cheers Wranglers.

24-Oct-15
"Enjoying the Port Hills" by Gordon Ogilvie says these dikes attract the attention of 'geologists from far and wide' so we felt obligated to put this earthcache on our 'must do' list. We looked, we measured, we photographed, we discussed the vandalism and we got another view of the dikes as we flew up to the Little Broomstick. What a great place to see - thank you TheWanglers!

24-Oct-15
I had a great day on the Port Hills with Daywalk, and jrb5050,, gathering caches from different points, and although the dike was near the end of the list for the day, it was a "must see and do".Really interesting and informative cache page which led me to do further research. We also went to the top of the hill for a different view of the dike. Many thanks to TheWanglers for this Earthcache.Smile

Logging after submitting answers to CO

I always like to get out and discover a new spot via ways of an Earthcache, and this one gave me a good little bit of learning, plus without having to go far a great view to get distracted by. I got set about answering the questions and then took some photos out over the bay and harbour.

18-Oct-15
Explored the area with some friends to show them some different cache types as introduction - and the area is great with Traditional, Multi, Mystery and even an Earthcache. This one had us with a lot of discussions around the different type of rocks and what we need to measure. We came up with a combined solution and got the confirmation that at least some of the guesswork is correct. The graffiti in the photo has changed as well, but this did not hinder us in finding the information. Really appreciate these Earthcaches as each of them tells a story and you can even learn new facts while caching. TFTC

cache find #3775 We have had such a great day out and about geocaching and learning more about New Zealand and the landmarks etc. We parked the geo hire car, and made our way to the earthcache. We did what was needed to answer the questions of the CO. A favourite point from us. TFTEC.

02-Oct-15
We made the windy trip up to the top of the crater rim today and examined the dikes. A good little spot where you could see the different dikes clearly. Tape out, cyclists past and then we were off down the other side of the hill. TFTEC!

29-Aug-15
Went to the GZ location back in November 2013 we mislaid the measurements and then forgot about the cache. I was looking for an Earthcache for the Geocaching road trip souvinir and this one came to mind. So made the journey back up the hill with all the required equipment to enable me to finally log this cache. After a wet start the day turned out to be a lot better which enabled me to find a few other caches as well.

We were out and about for a few hours of caching with sonia26642, and of course we had to stop here. We were quite relieved that the road was not busy just when we were hopping around, as otherwise half of the city seemed to be out in the hills today! TFTC and a very quick reply to our answers!

Mum was up for a few days, so naturally, what do we do, but go caching.
I can't cache too much around though, as I still need to leave enough for my streak. But Port Hills are a good place to go, as it's just a little far out of cache a day territory!!

So we came here, and ended up finding 15, and 16 for mum.

This was the first on the list. Parked on up here, and started measuring. We must have looked a bit weird to the people across the road getting their bikes out!

Unfortunately the rocks have also been graffitid all sorts of strange things too...

Will upload selfie we took soon.

Greetings from Denmark.
Our rented car had to be fixed and while we were waited we had a tinylittle one in stead. We drove around and ended up here at this fine place - learned about dikes.
Thanks for showing, learning and sharring this with us.

#8911. We enjoyed this earthcache (just had to watch passing traffic while we were getting the vital statistics of the dike). Troodles sent our measurement to the CO and was pleased to find me measured up OK. TFTC.

03-Jan-15
It's always interesting finding out about geological features of which I am unaware in familiar locations, as was the case with these dikes. I had done a bit of prior research but found the dikes quite difficult to see properly in the photos. Luckily they were very easily distinguishable at GZ and we were soon breaking out the tape measure.
We then walked on to A little broom stick cache, so had a look at the dikes from another angle. Thanks for bringing me here. Logged with permission.

27-Nov-14
TFTEarthcache. Nice geological formation. We studied the dikes in detail and measured as well as we could. Thanks for the lesson.Cool

TFTEarthcache. Studied together with Gunnar. We really enjoyed it.

19-Oct-14
Unfortunately a week late for Earth Cache day but one we found very interesting. In fact a jogger stopped & asked why so many people take an Interest in these particular rocks. We had great delight in giving him a very basic geological history lesson & husband pointed out the dies across the Harbour. We continued on with our task & hope we g have the correct answers. By the way we are fortunate to own a copy of the book mentioned, so will explore some more fascinating volcanic occurrences around the Port Hills. Thanks for re introducing us.

12-Oct-14
Well I'm now certain I was never meant to be a geologist. I'm really not a hundred percent sure of my answers - I actually found another couple of features further to the left that looked like even smaller dikes and had spent quite a while pacing back and forth with tape measure and Google at play.
I've sent my answers to Tim (fingers crossed).
Anyway, regardless of how well I've done: thanks for the lesson!

12-Oct-14
With the move taking place tomorrow and me meant to be packing - why am I up here doing this? Answer - RuruNZ's fault for ringing me and asking if I wanted to, not mine for accepting. Answers have been emailed and we thank half of the 2Wombles for their help in holding the tape measure. Great day to be out and finding a few - beats packing anyday. Now back to it.

12-Oct-14
As today is International Earthcache day we of course had to go complete the requirements to log one. As soon as we arrived, we started reading the requirements to log this cache, and saw too familar figures staring at the same place we were staring at, with a GPS in hand. Seems Ruru NZ and kiwicampnut had the same idea as us! It was good to combine forces (and make use of their measuring tape) to complete the earthcache requirements. Thanks for the education. Cheers.

12-Oct-14
I had the Earthcache for today all planned - 'cos I was supposed to be in Queenstown. But that trip was cancelled so when the phone reminded me to get an earthcache today I had a small panic ... which one?
A quick call to kiwicampnut and we soon had the "which one?" solved. Easy as this was the only one in town that neither of us had found and that we had the tools at hand for.
At GZ we were contemplating the dikes when from behind us we hear "Crikey, so that's a dyke" (or similar). Luckily for The 2 (nearly 3) Wombles we had the required tool and with a group effort had the required measurements and hopefully the right answers.
Thanks for the lesson and (if we are right) the smilies and the souvenir.
Smile

6163. A very interesting area and a great spot for an Earthcache. I didn't have a tape measure on me today so used my tramping stick which is just over 1m long. Measure everything in sight as I couldn't quite work out what exactly was wanted. Also took several photographs. I will send all this information to the CO when I get home and have my notebook with me. Currently I am at the mall having lunch! UPDATE - sent the info and got approval - WOOHOO! Big Grin Rodney

This was cache number 899. It was interesting as most Earth Caches tend to be. I noticed some more dykes today while I was caching on the Port Hills.

Wow, so many cyclists up here this morning! I only wish the ones coming towards us would stay on their own side of the road! Anyway, we arrived here and straight away saw the rather striking display of dikes in the rock cutting. I got out with the tape measure and mucked about, and I hope my answers to the questions are in some small way correct! TFTC!!! Big Grin

We have walked past here many times, and had often noted the eastern outcrop of the large dike about 25m from the road (as in the aerial shot), where it appears as two large straight-sided walls. In the past, my wife had wondered whether someone had placed boulders to make a building foundation, but now we see it is the harder edges of the large trachyte dike. The vertical layering is quite visible where the track crosses the dike on the crest of the rise just south of the powerpole.
Out on the road, looking eastward across from GZ at the carpark, we could easily pick out the series of dikes. Details emailed to cache owner.
I didn't have a camera or a tape measure, so my measurements are only estimates.
Many thanks for pointing this feature out to us.
Pity about the graffiti scrawled onto the smoother trachyte faces.
Thanks and cheers from Grandalf(2222)

Flew in from Nelson late in the day and had 5 caches planned that I wanted to get that were some of the older ones around Christchurch (hopefully before nightfall, along with this EarthCache. Collected this after Fore ball tastic and got asked if I was measuring it up for a "Banksy" type graffiti creation and whether it would be for sale in the next few days.

Thanks for the reason to stop and admire the view and power of nature

How many times have I driven past here and not noticed this at all..hmm.. lots Red Face. I decided to visit the port hills today and do some caching. It's the first time I've visited up here for caches for over a year and as I was driving past here at least twice today I thought it would be nice to add to the day's finds.
What an interesting spot. I parked safely cross the road then where did all that traffic come from. They go real fast too, and that's just the bikes lol.. but actually it was the cars zooming by really fast that had me a little worried at one point. No problems we soon had everything done. I then went up top for a good look and was amazed. You just never realise what is around sometimes unless someone puts an earthcache out to make you investigate a place. As I was coming down I noticed a track closed sign...oops that's the second time today that's happened. Everything looked ok though so and I wasn't the only one up there!
TFTC, and the interesting lesson on dikes. Pix to come.

I have been passed this point so many times and not evdn notice the dikes. Took a bit of time to measure them up and a stab at which type was which, confirmed with Google. Thanks for the fun. Aslan*

I first visited a few weeks ago when the weather was nice but later realized that I had missed something. So, after some research, I came back on a cold wet day after the event in Kaiapoi. An interesting lesson about a geological feature I never noticed before. I will now be more observant of the other dikes located in the area. Cheers TheWranglers for the EarthCache. Took a long detour between jobs, to visit this cache, and gather the necessary info. Over the years I've walked, run, cycled and driven past here many times without taking much notice. Back home I spent quite a bit of time researching about the Lyttleton volvano dykes and learnt a lot - interesting stuff. TFTC.

I had forgotten to print out or copy the 'spoiler' picture before I drove to the earthcache GZ. But on arriving at the car park the earthcache feature was instantly obvious. Measurements were soon obtained and on returning home research was begun to identify what it was I had measured. Though I had come across dikes before whilst caching (there are some near a cache on the Gebbies pass - Sign of the Packhorse track and I had visited some on Rangitoto Island in my pre-geocaching days I was completely ignorant of the actual rock types. I found the topic quite interesting. It is neat when you learn something new. Thanks for the cache.

TFTC. When I saw this cache published yesterday I was delighted and decided to leave it as my last qualifier towards 55 Days of Caching, another TheWanglers cache. Here I am now logging my 55th day of continuous caching and it has been a great challenge for me.
I love this part of our city and coming up here to complete this cache was super this morning. I forgot my measuring tape and so had to improvise using a length of rope - a cyclist speeding around the corner on a fast downhill decent almost lost control as they tried to work out what I was doing!
Thanks TheWanglers for the geology lesson, the major dykes up at The Sign Of the Packhorse will be an autumn target for me.
A favorite vote from me.

Saw this published during the day...the Family and I just love the hills; knew the rough spot of GZ & thought it worthy of a family adventure after tea. Lovely early evening; knew the spot would be busy but wasn't prepared for just HOW busy....Sign of the Kiwi jam packed with cars, GZ carpark jampacked....nose to tail mountain bikers going down the Flying Nun track (below GZ carpark)....mountain bikers heading up the road to tracks...road cyclists whizzing down the road (fast & silent so watch yourself at GZ!)....WOW.
Great spot for an Earthcache; the hills deserve to finally have one! Facinating spot that you would normally just pass by without noticing the convolutions of the tortured earth. Great stuff. Thanks for making us pause, think & take a moment to admire the world in action (and the resultant of action).
Cheers Ears.
