Ocw the Bebes as we stay in Karratha a few days. Enjoyed the visit here and searching for the info. Answers sent in by the Bebes.
OCW PelDroedGwin A very interesting visit to this supersize plant. We parked at the closed gate, the visitor centre is closed until April. Upon returning to the car we were questioned by a (very apologetic) security guard who took pics of the car and copied down PDGs license details before wishing us a good day. We just told him we wanted to read the info panels.Answers went to CO.
Big thanks to Matthew Supertramp for placing this earth cache. We found this earth cache on September 20, 2024 while exploring the Dampier Peninsula. Amazing experience.
On our Australian trip . After started for some days in Darwin we are on the road to Perth now .On the Road after Katherine, Edith Falls, Kunnurra, Bungles Bungle, Emma Falls, El Questro, Mitchel Falls, Manning Gorge, Galvans Gorge, Bell Gorge, Tunnel Creek and Windjana Gorge .Now again on the sealed road again. From Derby, Broome, Port Hedland direction Karratha .Not so interesting, a lot to read, but impressive .TFTC# 17'197
This sure highlights the very region, the industry, and the scenery. Both have their fascination. Thanks for highlighting this and for encouraging me to visit and experience it with this VC. A nice original Virtual too.
A caching trip from Canberra, ACT to Cape York, Qld and then around the gulf to East Arnhem Land, NT then over the top of WA to Perth.Interesting detours to Thursday Island, Mabuiag Island, Mornington Island, Doomadgee, Hells Gate, Nhulunbuy, Wadeye, Litchfield Nat Park, Wyndham and the Gibb River Road.TFTC.What an enormous factory with enormous production. Looks odd when you spin around 180 to look at the Pilbara rock mounds.
Found with e.gregory1 on a trip from Adelaide to north-western Western Australia. We spent four nights in the north-west, staying at De Grey River near Port Hedland, Point Samson, Dampier and SW of Karratha to target a selection of caches while in the general area. Very impressed with the interpretive centre and sculpture as we investigated the gas operation. Thanks for the interesting earthcache Matthew Supertramp!
Found on a trip to Western Australia from Adelaide with FeatherWaite. We stayed at Dampier last night and after a short detour back up the Burrup, we cached around Karratha, did some shopping, restocked and refuelled before heading to Miaree Pool the set up camp for the night. An interesting overview of the NW shelf gas operations. Thanks Matthew Supertramp for the earthcache.
An interesting place to visit while spending a couple of days in Karratha.Unfortunately the visitor centre wasn't open but I got what I needed.Answers sent to the CO.TFTC
This was a sight to see, industry on a large scale.Very interesting details and a well made earthcache------Decided to do a long road trip, flying in from Canberra, starting and finishing the drive in Port Hedland. It was a long day of flights, followed by 7 days of lots of kilometres. I stopped at every 'point of interest' along the way, I wanted to miss nothing! Earthcaches, Virtuals & AL's are always very good waypoints for interesting things as well.Every night I downloaded a bunch of podcasts and these made the kilometres fall away. This was the first outback road trip I have done where I saw more emu's than kangaroos. The wild camels walking in the desert were also very cool to see. My trusty swag served me very well.
~ First stop of the day. The gate was closed so we parked outside and walked in. Started reading the signs and collecting the info needed when car drove in and told us we couldn't be there I said we were just reading the signs. "No you must leave"!! I started to quickly take photos and was told I couldn't take photos I said it was of the signs which they reluctantly allowed but when I started to try answering the questions from the photos I'd taken I realised I didn't actually have all the required info. I think some of the answer need to be gathered from inside the information centre. Was very disappointed that I couldn't complete this cache. Not sure if and when I will be back this way, but hopefully, if I do make it back, I will be able to turn this sad face into a smiley next time. Thanks for bringing us to this interesting place even if we were kicked out!
Great to venture here and definitely wouldn't have without the cache. Learned a lot even though it was closed!
A great cache, thank you!
A great cache, thank you!
A very involved and interesting EC. It took a while to read all of the information but, who doesn't love a good earth cache? Thanks, Matthew Supertramp.
Day 16 holidaying in the Pilbara & finding a few caches that we have ran out of time to do on our other days spent out here... We were initially unsure of doing this one but why not, we are here now Managed to find all the info required & only one question we got stuck on... What a shame this area is closed as it is well worth a visit, even to the outside!
Thanks for drawing this spot to our attention... Jase will be forwarding the required info, cheers [^]

The visitors centre was closed which was a shame but we took advantage of the shade while we read the information boards. TFTC Matthew Supertramp
Checking out the sights today with 2beez and geocaching is a great tour guide.
Interesting to see this area up close as we have seen the flames burning from a distance the last few days.
Thanks Matthew Supertramp for your quick reply and EC highlighting this area.

TFTC out exploring the area with Crack n Lee Lee. Interesting area. Answers sent in by Lee Lee.
Visited here on the 5th March but only getting a chance to log it now. This trip was a quick one for a family wedding so we only had a couple of days and a few family members to show around town. TFTEC.
Another great earth cache here. We enjoyed looking and reading all about the area and gas project and what was achieved, fantastic.
Definitely needs a fav, TFTC Matthew Supertramp!

Out with Team Barritts finding caches before we head back to Perth. Loved this one, Tftc!
My last day in the area. Finished work stuff at lunch and thought I would pop out and learn a bit about the North West Shelf. Lots of good information here...and an impressive engineering feat. Its amazing what we can do as a species.

We visited the Burrup peninsula today. We really enjoyed the visitor centre, lucky there is so much information outside as it is closed due to covid-19. We had a lot of fun finding the information although we missed one crucial item. Have sent answers to CO. Thank you for this cache.
This area really caters for tourists so well. Even though the visitor centre was closed, the outdoor area not only provided amazing views but the signage and presentation was perfect. Thank you Supertramp for putting this cache here. Earthcaches are my most favourite type of cache and with ones like this around, it’s no wonder. A fave.
We have visited this outlook and learned a lot about oil and gas.
Thank you for showing it to us.

What a great gas factory here.
We stopped only for this earth, since otherwise this industrial area isn't really a great touristic sight, but very interesting.

Glad to finally visit an area we have heard so much about. Collected the info and submitted the answers. Thanks Matthew Supertramp
I am currently visiting Wickham/Roebourne on a geocaching trip
Today I am having a RDO and set off early in the morning to Dampier
I logged a couple of caches on the way into town and then
I continued on a drive around the area finding various caches
Just a short drive from the previous cache
I pulled up in the parking area out the front of the visitors centre and walked over to the information boards to collect the required information
Wandering over to the nearby sculpture I was able to collect more information and take a photo
The plaque telling of the killing of the people inside the bank prompted me to wonder why someone would do that, tragic!
Once I had all the information I needed I went inside the visitors centre, grateful for the coolth of the aircon
It was way past my lunchtime and I was kind of hoping that there might be a café inside, no such luck
I had a quick wander around, I would have like to spend more time here but I needed to go get myself some lunch
The view of the massive plant was a sight to behold and is mind boggling to see how humans have harnessed technology to create this monster

Wow - an amazing Project
Such a huge scale for industry.
We learnt so much about the history and production of something that unless we were Geocaching, we probably would never have ventured out this way.
Thanks for sharing this awesome place.

A nice place to visit later in the day when the visitor centre was closed and it was not too busy. Certainly learned a lot from the info boards! Thanks for bringing me here!
The Big Western Australia trip in 2018. Day 22. Today was a day around Karratha on some of the 4wd tracks inland of town before Heading to Dampier and the peninsula for more 4wd tracks and a final hill climb on foot.
Last time I came here the center was fenced off for some work. Today I was able to read all the plaques and gather the required information, although one had me worried for a bit. e-mail sent.
Thanks.

Located this cache today as part of our exploration of the area. Thanks for bringing us out here. Having difficulty getting the internet to send messages for full information and may have to wait until we get better reception.
Thanks for this cache a good way to explain what goes on out here to the kids. Cheers
One of the best things on my big trip. Makes me wish I had taken more notice in Chemistry classes

With so many caches around the area we decided to spend two nights here and have today to explore Karratha and Dampier without the camper trailer on the back and a very pleasant day was had indeed.
We enjoy doing earth caches even though we are far from geologists but this one had a slightly different twist and we didn't have to know one rock from another, we simply came here and learnt a lot about the North West Shelf and what they are removing from this planet of ours.
We were a little vague on a couple of questions but emailed the answers off to the CO to see how we went. Fortunately our answers were good enough to log a find and we can honestly say that we walked away from here knowing a lot more about the extraction and production of gas than we did when we got here.
We were fortunate that the information centre was open which also added to the enjoyment and understanding of what is going on here.
Many thanks for setting this one up, a favourite point form us.

Interesting info and displays inside as well as an informative young lady. Many thanks to Matthew Supertramp for bringing us here to learn about our gas fields and oil production area.
Day five of Barnzy12 and Cravo10 adventure to the Northwest of WA, filling out boots with LGAs, rare DT, old caches, and good old fashioned red dirt!
Today we had an easier day planned with not so much driving! Staying around the township of Karratha, we had a nice sleep in and then warmed the car up on the way to Dampier to pickup a couple of caches on the way to meeting local cacher grandadbazza at the same location as dimor recent event.
We had a crack at the archived cache nearby but couldn't get it from its hides hole so left it alone even with a previous finders assistance, after a good chat with Barry we parted ways to collect some very rare virtual caches around the burrup peninsula and some semi off road caches including an earth cache.
We were about two thirds of the way through out Dampier caching run when notifications came through for a new multi not too far away, so we completed the 4x4 duties and then backtracked all the way to the red dog statue and claimed a very swift FTF some 1200km from home. Special thanks to dimor for a well put together multi that was simple enough for us simple minded cachers.
We then continued along the plan collecting as many caches around Dampier as possible, with some not attempted due to the extreme heat and the amount of caches hidden ontop extremely hot rock piles which have burnt my hands enough this trip.
We finished up on the Dampier area after seeing my favourite little island around sams island, such a wonderful spot just a hop skip and jump from he shores of Dampier.
After lunch we collected a few more smileys around Karratha before heading to Roebourne, Wickham and point Samson to collect all the smileys in those towns to make tomorow Journey a little easier, as we now only have to detour to Cossack on the small ish drive to port hedland.
A huge day out collecting 3 virtuals, heaps of traditionals, several multis, a puzzle and an earth cache. Full on day for caching finishing up around 8pm with some take away atop a small lookout hill.
Looking forward to heading to Port Hedland tomorrow via Cossack, Whim Creek and a few other sights!

Found with Sambc72. Great to introduce a new geocacher to different sorts of caches. Holiday is over now back home to slightly colder Tasmania
The visitor centre wasn't open but most of the information could be found outside. TFTC.
Kids enjoyed going out to Dad's work!! They did a good job finding all the info. TFTC!
Found it. Couldn't get to plaque with history due to work being done in the area so found details online.
I had to go to work but Mrs DD2 took the famIly to this one and took note and photos of the answers needed. She knew, this way she couldn't get it wrong [:Df]
She said the kidlets loved the artwork. Also the smaller flame came on just before they left which was easier for the kids to see as the strong breezes was really blowing the flame around from the taller stacks that they couldn't work out if it was 2 flames or 3.
I will send the answers in a few minutes
TFTC and bring the family here. Always good to know where things we use comes from

I finally spent the time at the Visitors Centre looking for the answers to these questions. It was a nice shady stopover after a couple of other caches at the Burrup. It's interesting to see where you, and a bunch of other people that I know, work. Thanks for the cache Matt. Bjossi took photos, and I will post when I can.
The big move from Townsville to Mandurah WA. 5000km and lots of caches!:) Spending 2 days in Karratha and Dampier before we get to see some family down in Newman. Love this earthcache and will give it a FP because I enjoyed learning about how the gas plant works.

Our very first earth cache which we found really interesting. What a great experience, reading, learning, observing. Thanks so much for putting this together.
Enjoyed checking all the required info for this cache. The Info Centre was worth visiting with their film and info on the gas shelf. Many thanks Matthew Supertramp for the cache.
Really mind boggling at how this facility was built. It is huge!! Flames are quite spectacular too. Nice to see where a family member worked while Pluto was under construction. Will upload photo when we return home.
Answers on the way be aware number 7 is hidden near some current works but still accessible TFTC
Woohoo got the right answers tho I was determined to after my recent event in Dampier and having CO greatly emphasis that I had to be exact with question 4 so I used a converter to make sure my brain was working correctly, thankfully it was

We enjoyed our time here and were given some prizes for completing the kids activty section.

This was our first cache in a run on the Burrup Peninsula. Unfortunately when we arrived the Visitors Centre was closed so well done Matthew Supertramp on ensuring all answers were available outside. A bit strange for a centre such as this not to be open on a Saturday! It was also closed when we visited the area 4 years ago.
The scope of the operation in the area is amazing and has to be seen to be believed.
We certinly enjoyed our visit and the cache.
Thanks once again Matthew Supertramp

We really enjoyed this EC. Watched a short movie which was very informative then a short animation which I found quite cool (Mr M nearly fell asleep but he always does with screenings). Had a good look around the centre and through the glass lookout. What a massive place this is. Lots of info read and Mr M stated he had worked for the company which built the trunkline but back in the 70s - before it was even thought about. Loved the flame but it seems such a waste that they cannot find a way to harness the energy it contains. As I log this tonight we have been prospecting on the beach and clearing it of rubbish. We heard a loud woosh which sounded like a plane was about to crash into us then turned to find a second flame thrower had ignited. Suddenly there were two huge orange balls in the sky and the beach sand was bright orange with the glow. A beautiful colour all around and a great bit of fun... right spot, right time for once. This certainly added to our venture so a fave for you. And the beach at Withnell Cove is cleaner now TFTC

We enjoyed visiting this location, the centre was not open so we are pleased all the information we required was located outside.
Saw a number of Sturt Desert Peas in bloom along the road side.

A great Earthcache and area to visit. After reading all the was on offer, we'll almost everything, I was very enlightened as to what was really part of this LNG/LPG resource that we have here and actually how much of it is obtained each day. Very interesting. Thanks very much for bringing me here, not only once but twice. I would image it would be a very common incorrect response that I sent you and needed to reinterate. Once again, a great cache Matt.
This is a very different type of cache for me. Yesterday I sneaked outside the gate on my lunch time break with the question list printed luckily as I lost my concentration due to two dogs tied up outside the centre and they were not happy at all. The owners most likely enjoying the aircon inside the centre. Thanks Matt for another interesting cache.
Ahhh another FTF!
Took two days to solve the puzzle, but not because it is so complicated. I should have read through all the questions prior to the hunt. Instead of doing so I just had a glance on the questions, drove to the locations before work, and took some photos of the big signs out there. Then at the end of the day I realized that I should have been more careful, so had to go back for some missing pieces...
The view was really nice with the sunrise, I will attach a photo later.

Instead of doing so I just had a glance on the questions, drove to the locations before work, and took some photos of the big signs out there.
