Attempted this with Buz21b today just as the tide had turned. My Earth Science degree failed me entirely here in terms of answers (my memory!), but I very much enjoyed seeing the fossil stumps and having a paddle. Answers sent, which are probably no good, but I enjoyed trying! TFTEC!
Perfect day for a drive down to Caves Beach and there were a few caches in the way ??
What an amazing location ?? I arrived as the tide was turning so my visit involved looking at the waypoints and rock-hopping back to the beach. At the top of the carpark there’s a trail that leads down here.
Dropping off a **FAVE** ??

This Earthcache certainly brought us to any interesting area. We found it interesting to walk around the rock platform finding many examples of these petrified trees.
I'll have to admit that the questions made me think and I had to read through the notes several times. Hopefully I have interpreted the questions correctly.
Thank you, Marcus Vitruvius, for organising this informative Earthcache.

TFTEC.absolutely loved the area and if it wasn’t for the rain I would have stayed there for a long time. I’ll have to come back. I have never seen so much fossilised wood in one area. So many amazing rocks scattered everywhere.
Logged with CO’s permission. A great earth cache. I didn’t get the right answers but the CO very kindly told me what they were and now it makes a whole lot of sense. TFTEC
Also a very imressiv location on the beaches around here. Really nice to see all the stumps.
Thanks for the cache.

My advice to other cachers in not to arrive at high tide. It looks like a great spot to explore but pick the tides correctly.
In the area for a few days of holiday with geopartner and geohound. We really enjoyed the walk along the rocks, especially as it was low tide - perfect. Found the info and sent to CO for confirmation. Met a chap enjoying a beer or two in the shade under the cliff face - he seemed to know a thing or two about the area. TFTC MV
Hi Marcus
Fascinating area giving a very different view of the channel.
Not overly confident about the answers but here goes.
1. 60cm
2.Silica
3. East to West
4. At the edges of the rock shelf there are Dykes which are formed when magma rises into an existing fracture or creates a new crack by forcing its way through.
5. I think it runs N -S.
Thanks for bringing us out here.

Great and informative earth cache, the more you look the more of the fossilized forest you find. TFTC
Arrived at the suggested parking spot air was lightly raining. So I got out to see how far away it was and if it was low tide. Sure enough all was good apart from the rain.
I went back to the car and read the description and what was required. By then the rain had stopped and I made a run for it.
Talk about perfect timing, I was able to explore and enjoy all the different colours, textures, shapes and sizes and gather the answers.
Favourite point given.

The Petrified Forest sounded intriguing, we've been wanting to see it for years. After working out the tides we rode from Blacksmiths allowing plenty of time. And all the online hype is right... the Petrified Forest is an amazing location when you know what you're looking for. An excellent earthcache, thanks Marcus Vitruvius. FP.

We came to this area to collect a sample of sea water for another Earthcache, but seeing we were so close to GZ for this one , I thought I’d get the information required for this geocache too while I was here. The landscape type is fairly familiar to me, coming from Phillip Island in southern Victoria. We don’t have a petrified forest like this one there were bases of petrified trees scattered over a large area here. There weren’t any significant trunks of trees to see as you see in pictures of other petrified forests, but once you tune your eyes into what you’re looking for you can see the bases of the trees.
This was quite a different Earthcache to the 100+ other Earthcaches I’ve done.

I found lots of caches on a roadtrip holiday up to Byron Bay. Over the course of the week, I targeted a variety of caches that worked towards different statistic-based goals. Thanks to all the Cache Owners for their contributions to this fantastic recreational activity.

Great place to take the kids. Explored as far south as we could go! Great way to teach the little ones. Very interesting! Tftc
We were heading up to Belmont to stay the weekend with some friends who had recently moved up here. I decided to try and pick up a few caches en route. This one was definitely on the list of likely candidates. I had checked the tides and was really pleased that we would be arriving at very close to low tide, as recommended. On a previous weekend I had missed out on an EarthCache elsewhere on the coast because the tide had been high and I had been unable to see the feature.
We parked a little way off, but a nice little walk after a drive is always in order. From there we made our way to the beach and I immediately began looking for the feature at GZ. I had told the family that we would be visiting a really cool place, though I was not letting on what we were about to see.
At first the others didn't recognise what they were seeing. On that note, I probably also wouldn't have known for sure had I not read the cache listing. On a visit to Newcastle quite a while back I had also found a similar EC there, and what a beaut that one was, too.
So, after looking at the main fossilised tree stump we had an animated chat about what happened here, and what we were examining. We found several other similar remains of stumps nearby, mostly smaller than this one. We also saw a group of teenagers who were on an outing here, also examining the same features. At first I had thought they might be cachers, but they were on a geography excursion to the area to complete a project. Great stuff!
I have come across several interesting geological features through ECs while geocaching, and I'm often surprised that there is very little to no information at the site, not even to advertise the features. Is this sort of stuff just not a big thing, as though the people are quite blasé about these amazing sites? Dunno ... but I certainly enjoy them and have been lucky to find them through caching.
After taking a few photos and examining the site we had to leave in order to meet up with our friends. They were really interested in what we had to tell them about this spot, and will probably come here at some point soon so that they too can see the evidence of a prehistoric forest.
Answers were sent to the CO via the messenger service and eMail. Thanks for bringing us to this very interesting spot -- something we would never have found without the EC listing.

working on clearing my 30k radius, So I got up nice and early this morning to make it here for low tide and it was really nice being there with hardly any muggles around, just a few dedicated fisherman. I enjoyed seeing the fossils I had never known they existed before this so it was very cool. Thanks for the cache Marcus Vitruvius def fav point for the location and helping me to learn something new

CacheKel73 and I started this , This morning but we were not quite close enough to low tide, we got to waypoint 1 ok but too much water for waypoint 2, We will be back
This is a thoroughly enjoyable spot that Genghicat and I made the most of splashing around and taking photographs. Initially we were questioning where all these tree stumps were supposed to be, but by the time we left we were picking them out everywhere. It was tempting to swim but with blue bottles lying all along the beach and 2500 stings this weekend we chose to be cautious. It's an interesting and pretty area. Tftc.
Genghicat will send in the details.

On a road trip with my muggle friend from Canberra to Brisbane with a stop to walk the 5night/4day Green Gully Track. First time for me to find them in water after exploring many petrified forests before. Loved the area and its colors. Enjoyed the road trip with all its scenery, towns, beaches and wildlife. TFTC

The tides weren't very cooperative today, with the morning low before dawn and the afternoon one after dusk, so I ended up arriving close on mid tide at around 9am, with water already lapping around my feet and the stump at the listed coordinates. I've sent my answers to the CO.
I spotted another smaller stump beneath the water and several pieces of what looked like bits of trunk. Also encountered a sluggish bluetongue on my way back to the car.
Many thanks for an interesting EC and I really should return sometime to take a closer look when the tides are more favourable.

Our first cache of the day after failing to find the nearby multi. What a beautiful spot this is, and a refreshing wade to the waypoints as it wasn't low tide. Thankfully however, it was very calm and sunny making it quite easy to see the bottom. This is a super earthcache and a very interesting location. It reminded us of one of our first ever earthcaches that we visited in 2005, which was a fossilised forest in the UK, and was very similar (https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GCMZRN_dorset-series-earthcache-fossil-forest).
Thanks for setting this earthcache up, and for showing us this great location!

I've had this EC book marked for a while now and unfortunately it took a nearby archived webcam cache which has recently seen some activity to bring me out. I arrived as the tide was coming in but it was a beautiful morning to do this cache. I did the bare foot jeff, explored for about 45 mins, enjoying the shallow water whilst spotting quite a number of the petrified stumps. Water is crystal clear today. TFTEC, MV. Counting lab caches, I think this is my ~100th non-trad cache in a row ..and it's not necessarily OZGM puzzles taking up the bulk of the space either.

We visited this earthcache with GoodLook and Micaparamedic, on a fabulous day out driving around the lake as part of the OZGeoMuster. It was getting quite hot and our brain cells weren't functioning well this late in the day, but Micaparamedic was patient with us and re-explained the strike and dip (like he has done for us many times before) so that we could understand the questions. We found the concept of the petrified forest very interesting.
We enjoyed pottering around the rockpools and chasing crabs while we were here. A truly beautiful spot. Thank you Marcus Vitruvius for placing this earthcache here. Answers have been sent.

Day 4 of the OzGeoMuster 2018.
Well the final day had to come. It's been a great adventure. Not looking forward to the trip back to Canberra, but there's no escaping that. A few events today and hopefully to grab the remaining lab caches. Yet another summer day here, 32C. No doubt the beaches will be packed again.
Apologies for the generic logs. I did enjoy exploring the area finding these caches and have met quite a few other cachers out along the way. Everyone is very friendly.
A wonderful spot with plenty of muggles about. Amazing to see tree truncks in the rocks here. Answers provided to the CO.

Enjoying our Monday trip around the lake as part of our awesome holiday to lake Mac ozgeo muster MEGA. Caching with NZ friend granville86a. Very hot today so this was a perfect cache to do. Such an interesting "forrest" that I would have been totally unaware of otherwise. Thanks for bringing me here, and the education!
Just one more cache on the way home from the Mega! With EverestHigh and Max Adventurer. A very interesting forest on the shoreline! Thanks for the lesson and bringing us to the rock platform. EverestHigh will submit answers for us soon. TFTEC.
A wander down here after finding a nearby cache, we have been saving the local earth caches for souvenir days but this one was far enough away that we decided to find it while we try for many cache types in a day. Some very interesting formations around gz, and the water looked very inviting too bad we didn't bring swimmers. Thanks for the geology lesson a favourite point from me.
We (with Snickersallan, Bluewattle and Patrol14) came across your cache, TeamSenz, during day six of caching during the Easter Mega.

Last day for us at the Mega. What fun we have had. Meeting new people (Trekking Trev) catching up with old people. Tonight went off with a bang, but today we had unfinished business. We had a list of at least 20 more caches to find. We are not leaving the Hunter without more smilies!
I spotted this earth cache, and as I have one in Brisbane called Petrified Forest ( GC6YTTK ) I thought I should attempted the questions. After visiting GZ and the Waypoint, a nice young local helped with some information. My answers are in the process of being sent to Marcus Vitruvius. If you like this earthcache, make sure you visit mine in Brisbane.

This was one of my favourite places during the mega. It was a wow moment to see this petrified forest. Loved the geological history.
What an interesting place. Thanks for giving us the background to these formations Marcus Vitruvius, once you start to work out what to look for you see so many of them. The afternoon sun lent a nice warmth to their colourings.
Woooooooooowwwww!!!
I used to live at Warners Bay as a child and don't remember hearing about this place ever. Mind you I was a child and most undoubtedly self absorbed. But I certainly would have been in love with the place had I known what it was. As I am now. We ( me and BRYZEE ) had so much fun running around looking at all the fossilised tree stumps I definitely recommend this earth cache TFTC
After a trip to Sydney and heading home TOMBI! and I stopped here for a Multi cache, and since the tide was out, we wondered on to the rock platform to look at the formations here. Making this the last cache for the day. On previous occasions I would have to swim to GZ so it was put off til now. Very interesting features in this area that I was unaware of. Excellent cache and fantastic location. TFTC
Gorgeous day out and about today with 3Ferrets. What an interesting cache. Thanks for bringing me here, I would never have learnt about fossilised trees - so thanks. TFTC

This was our last cache of the day before settling in in Charlestown for the night.

Day 1: Sydney to Newcastle
My goal for the day was to reach Coffs Harbour but a "slow-down" at Lane Cove took away about 2 hours off my itinerary that I never quite gained back. Fortunately, the delay actually worked in our favor insofar as the nightly stops we made.
___________________________________________________________________________
Adventure Log:
What better way to spend vacation than traveling as far away from home as possible[?] When AMTG asked me a few months ago where I would like to go, Australia was the most auspicious target. While Perth would have put me 11000mi from home, Sydney was certainly sufficient. [8].
We only had a limited number of days, so I built a route allowing us to visit Brisbane, Canberra, and Sydney within our 6 days. This, of course, meant quite a bit of driving [8)]. This whirlwind tour afforded us many wonderful vistas along the coast, in the 'mountains', and through the countryside.
We couldn't have asked for better weather and were only hindered by rain on our last evening in Sydney. And by hindered, I mean that the rain and traffic made me late for (miss) my own event at the Opera Hall [xx(].
In our 6 days, we covered over 2400km [^] and managed to find 76 caches, comprised of 60 Traditional, 8 Earthcache, 4 Virtual, 1 Multi, 1, Mystery, 1 Letterbox, and 1 Event.

What a wonderful earth cache, truly enjoyed learning about this interesting place. Found many stumps and marveled at their amazing history. Thank you and a fav for me. Found with GeoIan. TFTEC
Thoroughly enjoyed this EarthCache. Spotted so many stumps on the way back, which we never knew were there before finding GZ. Still a little confused around the answers, but I will submit my answers and see how we go. Would love to have found some of the other fossils you mention, but probably more of a challenge than I was prepared to spend time on. Thank you Marcus for enlightening us. Visited with Madrabbitoh.
A beautiful day to be wandering the rock platform - thanks Marcus V for getting us off the path and actually observing the surrounds and going back to basics.
We had a girls weekend away at Lake Macquarie.
We solved a couple of mysteries before hand to pick them up on the way.
We stopped at many beautiful spots and swam at nice beaches and took some nice little scenic walks. We also swam in the rockpool. We found many nice caches.
Thank you

This one was the highlight of our day - after bad showings at Fernleigh Track #0 and Reid's Mistake (no 2 for them both!) we did this one, after having been here at high tide before.....
What a great spot! We thoroughly enjoyed wandering around here, and my son now has his show and tell topic for tomorrow as well.....
Thanks MV....

Out with DOC WHO today. I had been to this earthcache before but couldnt get to it cause of the high tie. This time after completing another nearby EC we went for this one and wow what a great lot of fossils TFTC
Yay, finally an afternoon with low tide
Picked up mr_roo and came up here just to do these two local Earthcaches.
Definitely Not disappointed either, great location and formations. Some great observations and lessons to learn here.
Will be awarding a Favorite Point for this cache, well deserved.

Have been meaning to do this one for a while but time, tides (not to mention poor geology background) had led us to procrastination. Mention of a souvenir was the impetus to go and get it at last.
Email was sent and answers were correct. Yippee. Thanks Marcus Vitruvius

Could only see water where the coords where taking. So I guess it's a boat cache.
Or...you simply visit the location at low tide like everyone else...and as suggested!
This one is one of the very few local caches remaining on our map within a half hour drive of our house, and with kids desperate for a beach adventure we took this one on at low tide and went for a rock pool exploration mission. Kids loved every minute of it, jumping in puddles, and importing bucket loads of sand into their geodad's brand new work car... Oops. Enjoyed a bit of a geology lesson - there are some really great examples of petrified stumps here. Heaps of them too! Lovely little spot nearby for a swim with the kids in summer too.
Sent through answers and am now logging with permission from CO. Thanks MV for a super fast response.

Find No: 4627. Not being much of a geologist, I have shied away from this one but, looking for a Geocaching Road Trip Souvenir, I thought I’d give it a shot. Unfortunately I am still very confused and was almost too embarrassed to submit my findings!
I was hoping that, having attended the scene (at precisely low tide), making an attempt at answering the questions and (maybe) getting some right was enough to claim a find?
Thankfully MV agreed to accept my attempt! It was an interesting excursion with many petrified stumps and fossils, thanks for the cache Marcus Vitruvius!!

I really like the petrified forest. I thought it was very interesting. There were some cool rock pools here. I hope to come back. I have sent my answers. Caching with McLookers today.
We checked the tide times last night before venturing here today. We were amazed at the petrified stump. We observed others similar but not as perfectly formed scattered around the area. Thank you for encouraging us to learn more about this very interesting geological activities of many, many years ago. Caching today with Tomstache and visiting from Ballarat, Victoria. Answers submitted.
Always great to see an earth cache, what a great spot !!Managed to get a break in the weather at low tide so off we go. Hopefully I can now answer the quiz TFTC - the salmon are on ( so they tell me ) so while I'm out this way my try my luck.
Found the area ok. cold wet rainy day but here anyway. email sent to co with answers to questions. Thanks for bringing me to this spot.
What a fascinating part of Australia, the Lake Macquarie area is, a playground for tourists, water sports lovers, geocaching and more. We spent the day adding a number of smilies to our map, however we will need to visit again to make any inroads at all.
This cache was on our 'must do' list, unfortunately the tide was against us.

I had been here before in between tides, but the water was to high and Junior was deathly afraid of water. This time I looked it up and got Orrsome to come with us. We were about an hour after the lowest tide, but it was still very low and we had the whole platform to explore. At GZ we picked which was the formation we were meant to be looking at and did our calculations, then headed over to way point two. After I climbed up the rock shelf that the waves were crashing against and got a nice spray to cool down. The only "tree" I had seen was the one at GZ, so we took a different way back to the car and started finding many more formations, some of them in even better condition then the given coordinates. Orrsome did not get his feet wet at all, whereas my son and I both got wet to our knees jumping in puddles, nothing a few seesaws and swings could not fix though.
Thanks the the informative and interesting earthcache!

Found with Tombi who was keen to get this one as it was the lower tide of the day. Had us scratching our heads questioning our interpretation of the formation and our limited understanding of geology. found some interesting artwork on the way to the cache. TFTC
Name: Double pluggers stalactitous. Artist: unknown. Formed: within the last year.

Returned for another try only to find a really high tide and millions of Boxing Day muggles. Should have known better. Thanks MV
