#8377. I had been looking forward to todays geocaching adventure for weeks. I love exploring the back roads of Wairarapa and southern Hawkes Bay and the gravel roads north of Route 52 are certainly in the category of "the road less travelled." I had mapped out a long trail of mainly skindo caches to find starting at Rimu Road and taking us up around Waihi Valley Road, Towai Road and Waitahora Roads. Barefootguru joined me on the quest today and we left Wellington at 7 am and reached Rimu Road at 9.55 am. We got back to Wellington via Dannevirke and Palmerston North at 9.30 pm. The weather on Friday was horrible with rain and hail showers and strong winds. But Saturday dawned clear and sunny and the Tararuas looked magic with a fresh coating of snow all over the tops and snow sprinkled over the upper beech forest, below the tops. Lots lambs in the paddocks, kowhai was starting to flower and there were plenty of birds singing for me to record for the NZ Bird Atlas.
It was starting to get towards sunset by now and the day was getting cooler. Almost through this road. Birds have gone very quiet as they head to roosts. BFG raced over to the water tanks and soon had his thumbs up and cache in hand. He has been doing a great job of finding them while I take bird notes and hobble around with my strained calf muscle. Thanks skindo for the huge effort you made to put geocaching onto the map of the Wairarapa. Cheers GSEL.

Shiver’d in the dusk and hopp’d across to GZ. Sign’d log and jogg’d back. CO be thank’d!
#11,346. Park and grab on Waitahora Road in Waitahora. Fortunately GZ was all quiet at the time of our visit. Relatively quick find. The cache was in fair condition. The log was a bit damp but was just ok to write on. Took nothing, left nothing, signed log.

Another great day out in the countryside. As I had down loaded my PQ and done my prep work for today's trip prior to Queens Birthday Weekend I had no idea this had been Archived until I sat down to log it tonight. Cheers and TFTC
11.40: On the way from Dannevirke to Martinborough. Getting through the wet grass was the worst thing here[xx(]. Otherwise a quick find at the tank site. Plenty of water available today - inside and outside of the tank... Some noises from farming work around, but nothing watched our activities here. STF in 2018, great!
Weather: overcast, drizzle, 15°C;
Wheelchair: at the road possible in general, close enough to watch;
State: logbook wet.
Thank you!

Today's hunt for caches are those that are a few kms south of Dannevirke. I try to individualise each log where I can apart from the generic first line.
I found this by standing on it about 500mm from the fence. Still OK.
Cheers for the cache.

Did you know that planning has started for a Mega Event in Wellington in 2018? Check out the details on the [Wellington Event NZ (WENZ) Website](https://sites.google.com/site/wenzgeo2018/home) or visit the event's page on [FaceBook](https://www.facebook.com/groups/590545297801072/).
Thanks to the Cache Owner who has gone to the trouble of creating this cache, determining the coordinates and then averaging them to make sure they are accurate, placing the cache and registering it online for our enjoyment. Without Cache Owners doing their bit, there wouldn't be a fun hobby that we all love - so again a big THANK YOU. For our bit, all we need to do is find and log the cache that was carefully placed for our personal enjoyment. As we log it we should consider that the Cache Owner also needs to maintain it - when the log sheet fills up, they must replace it. When the container becomes full of water, they need to empty it. When the container is broken, they need to repair it. When it goes missing they need to find or replace it. Well..... the great news is we can do our bit too - make sure your log doesn't take an entire page - just a name and date. If full of water, empty and dry the cache as best as possible. Be careful when handling the cache and make sure you replace it where you found it. If it has a bag, seal it. Just remember - the Cache Owner showed respect to you by placing the cache - please respect them and fellow cachers that follow you by being careful with the cache. And if you have a spare log sheet and the cache you are at needs one, please leave it behind. Finally, if the cache does need maintenance, please let the Cache Owner know - you can log a Maintenance Log or you can drop a line to the Cache Owner. Above all - have fun and remember the Geocaching Code.

Off into the Wairarapa today for a little expedition with edvern - Pahiatua Track, Pahiatua-Pongaroa Rd, Coonoor Rd, Waitahora Rd, Dannevirke and back to Palmerston North. We hoped the forecast wild weather would not be too wild and indeed it was quite a pleasant winter's day for the most part. We were quite happy with our success rate too - 24 out of 26 caches. The other two must be missing!
Quite a cute little tank and a quick find. Getting very windy here now. TFTC

Found on a drive through back country Wairarapa. Enjoying the scenery and the company of the geodatums. Glad of my boots for this one. Thanks skindo.
Saw a tank in the distance and soon had cache in hand. Trickier finding in the dark. TFTC
On a road trip over the Wairarapa collecting a few more caches this weekend. Lots of rain but managed to make this one a quick find.

Operation 997.
After our recent mission to the November snow I realized I was now within 47 caches of 1000. The idea was then conceived to get three under 1000 (997) in order to get cache 1000 in Rarotonga at the end of November or early December. To get these last 44 we headed to Wairarapa (AKA Skindo Land) to pick up mostly park and grabs. The planned route had 49 to allow for DNFs, of which we used four. The mission took longer than expected but it was an interesting day - from getting stuck behind cows and then sheep through to an awesome lunch in Pongaroa - all in nice weather.
We over shot this so it was on me to run the 50 odd meters back to the cache, which upon arrival I instantly remembered the name of the cache and realized identifying the parking spot should've been a lot easier. The cache was quickly found while avoiding the electric fence before ensuring my feet wouldn't dry out today by walking through more long wet grass.

As said in Tommygun9's log below we embarked on a mission to collect 44 caches before our holiday/ honeymoon to Rarotonga. I had a lot of Skindo puzzles sitting solved so I searched out a route to collect the required number of caches- and didn't end up going past a single puzzle cache! (Oh well, looks like another mission will be needed).
Pretty straight forward find here. TFTC

In my home area is a challenge cache http://coord.info/GC4642W that requires to log two caches, that are between 19970 and 20037 km apart. As the area of Dannevirke is just opposite to Madrid, I choose five caches to log here. This was the fifth of them.
Thanks for the cache and greetings from Germany, Peter M.

A day in the country, eating Waiwawapa roads with the XV cache-mow-bill, sun and wind on the face. Nothing better gets this!
Straightforward find, cache in order, log signed; safely re-hidden, just as found.
TFTC found with team cacher Sweet P too
The Turtle strikes again!
Retrieved Princess Lara TB - no sign of the Geogem.

Headed south with C&D, for a full weekend of caching, with the first cache being found at 6.00pm Friday night and finishing with an Event in Hamilton at 1.30pm on Sunday afternoon. Both of us had certain caches we were targeting for the Geo Licence series, as well as finding anything else we driving past, or near. All up we found 165 caches, travelled just over 1700kms and had around 5 hours sleep.
All in all it was an EPIC adventure, exploring in and around the Whanganui to Dannevirke area. We found some great caches along the way and saw some great sights. Thanks to everyone for placing all the caches.

A bit of a caching trip in the company of HKCB both of us endeavoring to know off a chunk of the requirements for the Geocaching License Series (different stages, different requirements for each of us), so what better excuse for a road trip.
Between 6.30pm Friday and 1,30pm Sunday I collected approx 140 caches (HKCB=155) and many of these needing to be a great distance from home, so little sleep, so much caching
Some figures for the trip were
1/. approx 1700 kms
2/. Caches mentioned above.
3/. some very memorable caches in Wanganui
4/. lots of laughter and lies
5/. 4 hours sleep
A quick little stop and grab, all good with the cache
thanks for the placement

Headed out on the first flight to Wellington Saturday morning with FMZ and Lostcourse. Relocating a vehicle back to Auckland meant we had a big caching road trip ahead of us...! We headed back through the Wairarapa towards Napier, clocking up the numbers through skindo land. Sorry for the copy/paste log as its now all abit of a blur having cached for 36 hours with only a few short naps in between. Enjoyed the drive through these rough and winding gravel roads and saw alot of interesting sights.
36 hours, 1,200km, & 315 finds made for an epic adventure! Many thanks for the cache and the perfect excuse to make a weekend of it!

Took the first flight down to Wellington on Saturday for a fly-down-drive-back-caching weekend with mike-miss and FMZ - basically a caching raid across the North Island.Team FML! for the win! We headed out of Wellington making a beeline for the Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay before venturing back to Auckland. We headed through a bunch of interesting winding back roads and saw a lot of beautiful sights and historic spots that only geocaching could have bought us too. We shared the duties around and took a few micro naps when ever prudent. Saturday was my biggest caching day ever, and this February, is easily my biggest month ever. The tank had one of those orange floats that indicates water level poking out the top, so was easy to spot in the dark. Cheers for the cache placement!

Headed down to Wellington for a fly-down-drive-back-caching weekend with mike-miss and Lostcourse - basically a caching binge drive back to Auckland, caching under the moniker "Team F.M.L." We headed out of Wellington as quickly as possible to get some serious caching done in the Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay before heading back to Auckland. Apologies for the copy/paste log, but we found >310 caches in 36 hours and for many it's hard to remember specific details. We headed through a bunch of interesting winding back roads and saw a lot of beautiful sights and historic spots. We shared the driving and stopped for about an hour to catch some shut eye in Pongaroa before continuing, caching all the way. Saturday was my biggest caching day ever, and this Feb, after just the first 36 hours, is already my biggest month ever. TFTC!!!
Great to see some wonderful back Wairarapa back country, heading for New years Eve at CastlePoint. Thanks for the hide.
Another fun little excursion on a nice sunny day, and a Wairarapa gravel road. Enjoying the finds.

With the Seagnoid on Skindo's cache trail and some others. 77 of 82 caches for today. Thanks for the cache.
[Green] With Popmac on the way home from a Gisborne geocaching / daffodil trip. Popmac grows daffodils and took a bunch to a daffodil tournament thingy in Gisborne with plans to cache along the way, and I came along for the ride. He won $100! Covers part of the petrol costs! Which helps, as we are taking the long way home.
Tank is full today. Didn't i write that on an earlier log? I wonder if I gotthat earlier log confused...

12149… Tank goodness it was a quick find… much smaller than what we anticipated (the Tank that is), TFTC.
Our first cache in the August streak challenge. I wonder if we can do it? A nice windy drive in the country. An easy find. TFTC.
Another nice find as we check out some of the many Masterton and Tararua council gravel roads - although also some nice none dusty tarseal ones as well. Some great countryside through this area, and fortunately very little traffic. TFTC
Another good cache located today on a trip around the area with TuisReturn.
