173. A very cool cache container and easy to find. A trackable is waiting for the next geocachers venturing this way
#173 Not surprised with how long its been since someone has found this one. Theres a lot there to deter you. But got it in the end and Ive gotta say its a cool cache to find. Finally was able to pass my trackable on too!
Have been here a couple of times but looking for the wrong thing plus phone GPS not great.Realising what I was actually looking for made for a quick find and sign.TFTC
Definitely wanted to forget this place didnt they? A bit of tricky navigation to make sure we were not entering into protected lands (essential giving fines for doing so are now over $40,000) but managed to get here to find cache in pristine condition even after a year of being forgotten itself. Great history and hide thanks!!
Fabulous location, great history and we were searching for the cemetery and probably would not have found it without the cache directions.
Found It!
Interesting place. Found the nearby GCA cache then wandered over and soon found this one to.

#7035 (3 of 5 today)
Decided to head south this afternoon for today's finds. Thought I'd go for the three hides around Garrawarra Centre / Hospital. And one or two more en route...
Ended up getting all of the five I attempted.
###END OF CUT AND PASTE SECTION###
Like the last cache, my iPhone was less than consistent under the trees, but I got the right spot here much quicker than last time. Less viable hiding areas to check.
Completed signing duties and replaced, then headed into the cemetery for a look.
Cemeteries like this make me both sad and angry. Sad to think of the forgotten souls buried here - many I note less than a century ago. And angry to think that such a place can just be left to crumble.
It probably doesn't help in this case that one of my aunts could easily have ended up in a cemetery like this. And this cemetery operated at the right time as well.
Sigh.
Gets a favourite for bringing me here.

Found this with mrwhiskers76 the other day on the 4/3/20 but I forgot to log it. A quick find after finding another one nearby, my favourite container! Tftc
Found with teamMerlin and the phlphotos. With the cache in hand we signed the log before replacing as found. Both the cache container and log are in good condition. Thanks for the cache The Neighbs and sesblocker.
Out with phlphotos and JJCC in order to find a nearby large cache for some challenge caches in the ACT and Victoria...and picked up this cache on the way. Walked out along the tracks and made a very quick find at GZ. With the cache in hand we signed the log before replacing as found. 6 July 2019 15:57. Fortunately, team kiwichicks remembered to track this one down on the way back from the hotel. An interesting find and some sombre history. Thanks for bringing us here. A much appreciated addition to the Dgsc challenge ive been working on for a few years now. Tftc
Kiwi Chicks are in Aussie! We are Nosynel, Infoferret, Jude_E and Ethness. Over for the Ozgeomuster and trying to do as many caches as we can in the time we have here. Sometimes we signed as KC. This was a good walk for us. Three caches found. My gps on phone jumped about a lot but Infoferret honed in on it. Good container too.

Thanks The Neighbs for placing this geocaches 7123 find for me. There was no great plan today apart from hopping on a plane from Christchurch to Sydney early in the morning with one of the team Jude_E. The plan is to take the train to Wollongong and then get picked to go to the Mega. Who knows how many geocaches we will find today.
The time has finally arrived for a massive Australian road trip with The Kiwi Chicks. We are GraciesGPSfun , thedbees , Ethness, Infoferret , Jude_E and me Nosynel. We might sometimes sign the geocaches as KCs or TKCs.
Sadly there was no large event in New Zealand in 2019 but there are a few Mega events planned in Australia. New Zealand will have another large event in 2020 in Auckland.
======== NZ Mega 2020 ========
Planning for the NZ Mega 2020 event is well underway. It will be held in Auckland over Labour Weekend, 23 to 26 October 2020. Thanks for hiding this geocache.

Found it a lot easier then the last cache on the way to the five star hotel to drop of a travel bug.
Wow, I was intrigued, when camping with the CO's over the weekend after we'd been discussing abandoned cemeteries. The cache was quickly found and i continued along the foot pad. At first I didn't see any thing and then just like ghosts of the past, the headstones started to appear, first only 1 and 2 then more and more as I roamed around. I spent quite a bit of time here. So interesting and so young. Lost souls forever! I found a great video online explaining the back ground of this cemetary. Excellent history here.

How could i resist an abandoned cemetery behind an old hospital?! :3 this place is so humbling! Alot of these souls where the same age as i am now and buried by their siblings or parents, i hope that the local council can maybe start preserving this history once more

The Neighbs I found your cache Forgotten on 3/1/17, 12:34 pm. This is my find #1820 and find #9 today. Thanks for bringing me here, such a sad piece of history. Thanks for the cache! TNSLLN
Found with Mikev1 as I edge closer to 1000 finds. This is #998.
Followed the trail from Six Towers and soon saw the geotrail. Found the hide easily. Nice big cache. Then spent some time looking at the forgotten graves nearby. Some of the people buried here died so young! Glad to hear someone is looking after them. A very interesting place to visit. TFTC.

Out on a perfect summer's day caching with Brewmaker (who was reaching a major milestone) around the Helensburgh and Woronora Dam areas.
After just having found The Six Towers, we continued walking to this nearby cache. Made the correct turn then found a little track that headed towards gz. There were a few possible hiding spots (having read the clue), but after quick search the right one was found with the cache sitting there. Opened it up, signed the log, and replaced. Then we went back to the short track and continued on a just a bit further until we came across the old cemetery. What an amazing location, all isolated here in the middle of the bush. It covers a large area, with the odd headstone, grave marker, or rocks indicating a grave. Many have been lost to the bush or fires, but it's good to see that some clearing has been going on here. RIP to the forgotten graves. TFTC and for bringing me here

Love a great sturdy ammo cache! A nice walk down the fire trail, before branching off onto this smaller path. We headed into the push and after a short search the cache was uncovered!

Found with Katsumar, Geopoppet, Diavolocacher and Geomum on the way to 5 star hotel. The discovery of this but of history was definitely the highlight of our day. Fascinating. Thanks for bringing us here.
Fascinating spot! Thanks for the geocache and sometimes forgotten info around places like this!
Thanks for another great cache lived in Helensburgh my whole life and never knew about the grave! Thanks once again loving the series!
Found with Clan of 6, Kool Kid and Pitbull83. What a very sad forgotten place, have looked up about this and I can't understand how a place like this gets neglected and forgotten about. A very well hidden but of history. Found the decent sized cache nearby. Thanks for bringing us here. If it weren't for geocaching I wouldn't of even known this was here.
Found while out adventuring on my way to Sydney for the day.

I had been staring at these 2 Garrawarra caches for sometime now, so I finally got up off my backside to find them. Found GZ quite quickly, and after a quick detour of the cemetery, the cache was in hand. The cache was dry compared to the area around it. Tftc
No cemetery sighted but felt very emotional after visiting this one. TFTC out on a caching day with luck6 & inthistogether
Such an interesting history. I love this about geocaching. Thank you for bringing us here.
The graves of the cemetery are approximately 25 metres South of GZ. There is a vague walking track between GZ and the graves.
I enjoyed the walk to the geocache. Unfortunately I didn't get to see the cemetery either.
I will make a point of revisiting here after I do some research on it.

Found with Irvaky. We could not locate the cemetery and our toddler would not let us continue looking. Happy New Year
I enjoyed the walk to GZ where I quickly located the cache. I was disappointed that I did not see the cemetery, but now reading CO logs the cache was moved 50 meters away from original location. I will come back and use the original coordinates to find the cemetery, TNLN thanks.
I didn't notice any signs of the old cemetery today, only a very obvious cache. Thanks.
We went to Helensburgh today... wow! Here are some very awesome caches! Thank you for this cache, really enjoyed finding this! (:
We have wanted to visit this cemetery for quite some time. We found it to be a very peaceful place. TFTC.
On my way back from finding 5 Star Hotel I couldn't resist taking another look at Forgotten which I had found back on the 24/11/13. I wanted to see the new location and the clearing work that has been done since my first visit. I was able to walk around and see many more graves that were covered in bush at my first visit. So many small graves with no headstones.
I came across an inscription on one of the headstones which I think is appropriate " deeply mourned but not forgotten".
I have left a note in the log of my visit. Once again TFTC The Neighbs.

Found with Paegle on a trip up to Waterfall for a SeemyShell cache,
This was also on Paegles to-do list for a while.
Most days I feel wild and daring when crossing closed gates,
but when a blue ford falcon pulled up 50m back from us at the gate, I was really fretting!
Hopped back in the car for a little bit, created some alibis and different names and went for it.
Turns out we were free to wander down the track. Managed to find the cache relatively easy and made it back to the car.
and now it looks like there is a brand new cache further along the track. Dang, guess we'll be back

As a newbie, this cache was our first (actually found my my wife). It is shown on the app as a premium cache which confused me a bit. A very interesting area full of local history.
This is a very sad and lonely place with a dark secret. Some good clearance work has been done so far, but it is overall in a disgraceful state. Perhaps if the authorities spent more time with the upkeep of their responsibilities rather than wasting public funds on Keep Out signs and enormous steel gates and locks, places like this would be more befitting and respectful of their past.
There is a very interesting You Tube video about the location, which hopefully, will lead to some restoration being carried out. This is the link:
https://youtu.be/Cgx9vmnz3Po
I wonder what other dark secrets are hidden away, behind the threatening keep out warning signs in the dense scrub in this area?

A fantastic walk to this one. I loved finding thia secluded gem! Who wouldve thought without coming here that there was a cemetery here?! After a quick peruse of the gravesites and thinking how awesome things like this exist it was on to the cache. It was a quick and easy find, its a little exposed but not easy to see. Thanks for the trip to this forgotten place
One of those caches I've wanted to do for a long time.
Did feel a bit dodgy doing this, despite the explanations of where it is and isn't kosher to walk. The gate now has a no trespassing sign on it.
Cache found easily and then on into the cemetery. Fascinating place, amazing how quickly nature has reclaimed it, and the wear on the headstones has been very quick. Equally amazing what one determined bloke has managed to achieve.
It may be worth clarifying that it is legal to go through the gate for the purpose of visiting the cemetery.

Was a little put off by the trespassing signs and the work vehicles near the reservoirs but couldn't see anyone around so took off down the fire road. Almost missed the track into the bush towards the cemetery but found it. Despite all the recent wild storms cache was safely tucked away and undamaged. Glad I got to see part of this cemetery in it's overgrown state before it's completely tidied up. Many sunken graves completely filled with water. TFTC. Great location
I recall mention of this cemetery and the history of Garrawarra hospital when I worked there back in the 80's.
But this place was just a little out of the way to go exploring during lunch breaks.

Out to enjoy Mother's Day with friends, checked out a few cachers along the way. After a short walk taking photos of the wild flowers on the way to GZ, one of the mugglers found the cache. Did a little research on this cache and was intrigued. Teamed up with Theobayman & our better halves for the attempt. I recommend viewing this video http://www.helensburgh.com.au/tag/garawarra-state-conservation-area/. Heeded comments concerning access to the site and kept to the right as we drove in & a low profile as we parked near the gate and headed off down the access road. No sign of a rock cairn but a rough trail showed itself when we became adjacent to GZ. Shades of "Blair Witch" as we pushed through the undergrowth - then we were in. Graves everywhere. Cache forgotten as we moved from grave to grave. We eventually came to P J V Hanlon's grave and knew the cache was close by. (pefectly dry - love an ammo can) We took another path out as we continued to see more and more graves in every direction. Small ones, brothers & sisters, very sad.
The site is worthy of recognition and protection. We will be watching to see how the Custodian decides to manage the site following the recent study. A favourite point for this - goes without saying. Thanks The Neighbs.

Wow. What history this place has. I followed the instructions and found the parking spot without too much hassle. Then at the gate the "no trespassing" sign did seem a bit intimidating but we trusted the description, stuck to the fire trail, and walked on. I missed the cairn and had to turn back, but once found, the trail led straight to the cemetery. The cache was well disguised but eventually we uncovered it. Thanks for bringing us here and capping of a very eventful and productive caching day!
This place is has such historical importance that it should not be forgotten. However it is amazing how nqture is reclaiming the area.
