Stayed in Whangammona last night. Drove the remainder of the Forgotten World Highway to Taumarunui today, picking up three caches along the way. This was the last of them. A much nicer day weather-wise than it was yesterday and very pleasant scenery along the way! Took longer than it should have to locate this one. Pleasant surroundings. Wandered around looking for the hint object! Eventually managed to spot it, quite well camouflaged and a little bit past the bridge. #8026. TFTC.
Found yesterday with bkj97, during an Easter trip to this region. This is an interesting location historically. Cache was in good order. TFTC
Sixth find of the day while playing support crew for some cyclists riding the forgotten highway. Caught up with them after a few cache visits in Taumarunui. Nice to have some caches to fill in our time between check in spots. Interesting history. Access easy once we ignored the distractor and found the gate access. All good here. Tftcsl
A short walk across the field, through the gate and to the remains of the mill and the small island - only we didn't find the cache.Ein kurzer Weg ber das Feld, durchs Tor und zu den resten der Mhle und der kleinen Insel - nur die Dosen fanden wir nicht.
Day 15: Through the Forgotten WorldTodays journey was a challenging one, leading us through the Forgotten World Highway through to Stratford and onwards to the Taranaki Region. We were sidetracked by the closure of the Tarangakau Gorge for most of the day, so we detoured through some back country roads in the rain. Truly an adventure, and not without a few caches despite the desolation of the landscape around here. Thanks for all the caches that made this adventure even more interesting. (End of the cut and paste bit)Heres the specific log for this cache:This was also quite a bit of an adventure, as I had to cross the paddock - and the long damp grass thoroughly soaked my pants, shoes and socks which meant that I had to contend with wet footwear for the rest of the day. But it was all worth it, the glade at the end of the walk was a most tranquil and serene location, well worth the trouble getting here. Cache was found as per the hint, not too many hosts of the sort in the area. TFTC!
JD found it. He likes to say, " see dear you have to stick with the experienced" , Yes JD found the container. This is an interesting historical site. JD also unexpectedly found one of the trenches.
What a beautiful spot, nice for a picnic. Didn't have a pen, so left a couple of dirty finger prints!
Interesting location, always like these historical sites as I drive the Highway The cache was wet but signage. Found a couple of days ago, unable to log on day as no internet.
Heading on to Taumarunui this morning from Whangamomona - the first time I have driven this bit of road since the 1970s when it was all unsealed. When I got close to GZ the GPSr was pointing me across the stream and I didn't have waterproof boots. However I considered that a bit unlikely so I started searching a close-by hint object and soon came up with the goods. Interesting bit of history here. Signed log, TFTC!
Some of the previous logs mentioning bulls and unfriendly farmers were not very encouraging, but I decided to come along anyway. Interesting access via the little gate. Then I spent ages looking as the GPS would have me higher then lower but certainly nowhere near the cache. Eventually I stopped looking at it and looked for a suitable hide, and that worked. TFTC!!
Was trying to spot the gender of the bovines in the paddock in case there was a bull then the farmer turned up. He said there was a bull and it was his land. Wasn't going to go after hearing that.
After talking about it for a few years we decided it was time to drive the forgotten highway. This was found on day 1 on our way to spend the night at the Whangamomona Hotel. I had to do this one alone due to a bull being in the paddock, he took no notice of me as I headed to and from GZ. Found as part of our school holiday North Island road trip. TFTC
After unsuccessfully trying the second stile we discovered a useful gate. Found with mr c on our travels from the UK thank you.
Found with MrsC on our NZ travels, thanks. A great day travelling the Forgotten World Highway. I thoroughly enjoyed the high hurdle stile. The gate is a better ption.
Scouting out Taumaranui before heading south today. Came and checked out the local notice board. Then to search the hint item to get this one tagged. Cheers
Day 17 - Sunday 29 December. Taumaranui through to Hawera today. So lets go!!
The Seagnoid, Zara, Toby and I are spending Christmas exploring Taranaki via geocaching. Its been an amazing 3 week adventure. Rattls BBQ was a great event, meeting many other cachers. But also managed to fit in a few more events, especially New Years Day celebrating the start of 2020. Lots of caches - over 500. Lots of cache maintenance. Lots and lots of kilometers. And lots of amazing places visited along our journey. Mt Taranaki remained elusive for much of our travels and the caches on it at the top. Loved Pukekura Park Night Lights Show and the the Wooden Mechanical toy exhibition at NP Info centre.

This I vaguely remember. a narrow stream, and remnants of foundations? If that's right I remember being impressed with the location. Gets a favourite.
I have lost my notebook! When I go on a geotrip I record my finds and notes in a log book or, in the case of this big circumnavicaching trip around Mt Taranaki that Taybeedragon and I did over Christmas, in three notebooks. And I have lost notebook number 3 - 29th December onward. Luckily I enter the caches as found on the GPS (helps with avoiding backtracking) so I am using my GPS log to identify which caches I found/DNFed. Alas, however, no cache notes. So it is now March - and I am relying on memory. A fickle thing, memory. I suspect most will have no notes above. Sorry, folks.

Found after a few red herrings here with a rather variable gps signal on my phone. TFTC
For our NZ visit we created a "wishful-thinking-to-do-list" ... knowing we can not do them all but we can at least try. Old caches, earth, virtual and webcam are on the top of our list... but also some traditionals, multi etc...
We finally met team DDM, Englisch cachers here... not seen other cachers before yet during our trip.. they just logged this cache and warned us about the two bulls we had to pass for the cache. After some geo-talk we went our way again, towards the bulls and the cache
What a nice gem of a GZ location here... very nice... took some picture off course..

Lovely cache, just as I got to the ridge a very large bull came into sight, but he didn't seem to bothered. Didn't use the stile with my short legs, found opening the gate and ducking under the fence a better option. On way back to car we met a couple of Dutch cachers, had a chat, nice to meet you.

On our way from Taumaranui to Taupo today via a few caches on the Forgotten Highway.
Our last find on SH43.
First time I've had to use a stile to climb over a deer fence. I wouldn't have wanted to be any shorter. Lovely wee glade where the earthworks had occurred.
To top off my visit a Cresco was operating out of an airstrip just above us from the ridge on the other side of the road.
Gee, those boys can fly a plane.

We are on vacation in New Zealand and of course we seek some caches.
Thanks for this one! And thanks for showing us this beautiful place.

It was time to assemble Team BOP as I hadn't seen these crazy people since the Mega. The plan was Taranaki via the Forgotten World Highway and we were all pretty excited about it. It was a big couple of days so forgive the cut'n'paste logs as I'm logging retrospectively and a few of the hides are blurring together. TNXPro, McJandals, Davidson Clan & myself signed our logs individually or as TEAM BOP depending on time, log space or mood.
This cache was found quickly and in good condition thanks to accurate coords and a straight forward placement. Cheers Tufty, TFTC

TeamBOP have come together again for a trip to the Naki.
We decided to take the long way there, via the Forgotten Highway, experiencing the world famous in New Zealand Republic of Whangamomona Day.
We got to the deer fence which was placed over the style and without hesitation I scaled the fence at the gate. Philip followed behind and casually opens the gate and walks through, ducking under the deer fence. Doh! Might pay CO to update the page letting people know to use the gate, as there is evidence of the fence being damaged from people climbing it.
Some nice history in here and on the page and a pretty area to visit.
Thanks for bringing us to this awesome countryside.

7.09 km out with Tnxpro McJandals and Philip.Perry for a weekend road trip towards New Plymouth.
Found using Cachly app and logged using the text template, so please excuse generic logging in advance. On a spur of the moment roadie with Phillip.Perry, TNXPRO and Davidson Clan from the Bay of Plenty, a plan was hatched and here we are. Great to have these places to visit and many thanks to all you COs for the placements. Cheers
Drove the Forgotten World Highway as part of a family road trip. The caches helped keep the kids motivated. My son wants to come back now and find the legendary buried treasure. TFTC
I've passed this location numerous times over the year, but never realised it was possible to walk across the paddock to the old mill site. What an absolutely lovely site it was - shady and peaceful, very tranquil. Found with salhud, TFTC!
Amazing there is nothing left of flour mill and I would have known nothing about if not looking up cache.

#10,534. Today we took a nice drive to Aukopae on the Forgotten World Highway (New Zealand State Highway 43). Headed over the stile to walk across the paddock to this Aorangi Flour Mill site. GZ was all quiet at the time of our visit. The GPS kept pointing us across the trench. Eventually found it after widening the area, about 9 metres away. The cache was in good condition. Although the log was slightly damp, it was still ok to write on. Took nothing, left nothing, signed log.

Another interesting stop - we are really loving the history of the area. The information boards are really great and so is the history on the cache pages supplied by the CO's TFTC
Out on a work trip with a Polish mate, a chance to intro him to the joys of GC. We had a great day and did do some actual work as well. Mission accomplished, this one is a wrap. Thanks for the cache from Blenheim Bear!

This has been a trip that has been planned fro a few weeks with the prime objective to Jet Boat down the Wanganui River fromTaumarnui to Pipiriki the following day, but firstly we had to get there. On this trip we were heading to Mt Damper, through to "The Forgotten Highway" before heading back up to Taumarnui to clean that area out.
So setting off after work in the company of HKCB, iammrwalker and Kyb3r we headed down this way to eventually make it cross country before thinking about a bit of sleep. Signed the log as HOAC to save valuable space in the logbook
Spirits were high, concersation rediculious and plans made for future trips. By now on this trip we were deffinatly on our own and the place was all ours (it would be hours before we saw another car, and infact we only saw 3 vehicles between turning off SH3 and when we finally made it sleep time at 4.30am).
A very interesting spot and great even in the dark being able to identify the various parts of the mill remaining. Would love to have stuck around and see if I could locate remnents of the mill stones but sadley expect them to be long gone
A big thanks to all the CO's who have placed and maintained the caches in the more remote parts of New Zealand.
Thanks for the placement, Thanks for the cache

I found this geocache in the company of Cats&Dragons, HKCB and Kyb3r. We were together thanks to Cats&Dragons who had organised another one of his infamous Geocaching ‘missions’. The goal was to pick up a bunch of T5 caches along the Wanganui river via speedboat. We met at his place after work on Friday night and headed out into the night taking the kind of detours only an overachieving Geocacher can appreciate on our way to Tamaranui which is how we ended up here. We signed the log HOAC to save on space and as a reference to our crazy trip together. We did eventually get to Tamaranui at about 4am after Geocaching throughout the night. We pulled the car over, got maybe an hour and a half of uncomfortable, disrupted sleep, and then set off again to meet with six other Geocachers from Hamilton and Auckland who were joining us on the boat trip. It was certainly a memorable trip.
Since it was late, or early depending on your perspective we wanted to be quick and quiet. Mission accomplished. TFTC.

We had planned a trip a few weeks ago to Jet Boat down the Whanganui River, something that had been on my to do list for a few years now, and the time had now come to head down to Taumarunui and jump on the water. However while discussing this with C&D we decided to throw in a side mission and try and locate a few caches along the Northern end of the "Forgotten Highway" including Mt. Damper Falls and finishing with a clean out of Taumarunui the night before because as C&D constantly reminds us "sleep is for the weak!".
So we set off at 5.30pm Friday night, with Iammrwalker and Kyb3r in tow heading to the first cache of the trip. This side mission turned out to be very successful with us completing everything we wanted with a few hours of darkness left to grab an hour or two of sleep before making our way to the Jet Boat. We signed the logbooks with HOAC a group caching name we use from time to time. A big thanks to all the CO's whose caches we found on this side mission.
Some great history here. Didn't want to hang around to long and check it all out as we did visit during darkness hours, so it was a quick walk to GZ, find the cache and head back to the car. Thanks for the hide.

with a last minute trip up north we decided to make a big push to my goal of getting 3000 before the end of the year, I think we will get close starting with picking up some park in grabs, weather is lovely and always glad of the aircon in the car, hubby driving and kaleb helping when he could, thanks for the placement. First time hubby and I have been on this road on our way to raglan for some trail finding. Cool but of history, looks like someone got married out here with the arch maybe?
I see we found this on the same day as marisa&caleb and I've just seen her photos on Facebook.
What a magic place and an interesting character. Thanks so much for bringing us here!
We also wondered if there had been a wedding here, under the manuka archway. What a wonderful venue!
The cache was in pristine condition, but devoid of swag, so I remedied that.
A fav from us.

It was really hard to find. Half a hour we jumped over the fench and over the little Rivera to this cache. A nice location between the cows and sheeps.
A quick easy find, after a short walk across the paddock. Not much left of the mill these days. TFTC
After being around New Plymouth for the last week or so visiting my sister, it was time to head up to the high country for the mega event in Turangi. So today wasn't a day for getting every cache along the trip, but more getting from A to B with some dots on the map along the way.
Made the walk in to find a fence has been put up above the original and blocks access from the 2nd stile to get over, so no choice but to go through the gate ducking under the new fence. Once inside found the cache fairly quickly, then back through the gate being sure to close it both ways, and past a bunch of sheep to the car. Thanks Tufty.

After crossing the paddock to the flour mill area we had a general look around the historical site then got down to business. My gps was sending me in all directions, after looking for a safe creek crossing and deciding to axe that idea I decided to look for any of the hint objects closer to where I was and bingo the cache was in hand. Heading home via SH43 after from a couple of days caching and baching in Kuratau. This time I crossed the bridge, and there it was.
But I'd stupidly left my fancy geopen as swag at the previous cache, so had to traipse back to the geovan to get another. That's the first time that's happened where I had forgotten my pen and there wasn't one in the cache. At the end of the day (& it is!), All Good. TFTC

So worthwhile to make this little diversion to such a serene spot with the only sound being the burbling of the stream and birds singing. TFTC
Found with stairman1. What a great little spot. I was a little worried about crossing the paddock and was hoping no cattle were lerking in the shadows. This one took a little while to find but stairman1 located it. All good here. Thanks for the history lesson. TFTC
Parked up at the recommended spot & enjoyed a wander to the flour mill site. It was beautifully cool under the trees which encouraged us to linger longer.

A lovely little walk off the main road to get this one. The Bulls in the field didn't seem bothered by us either which was good! An interesting spot for sure. Thanks for hiding!

Today we (Silli1310 and me) drove the "Forgotten World Highway". It is a perfect combination of a forgotten tourist track and a incredible history senery along the road. Although it isnt a long distance we need the whole day to visit all the beautiful places and of course to search for some of the caches along the road. We enjoyed this amazing "side trip". Thanks a lot for the cache, which gave us the possibility to stretch our legs during the short stroll.
Sorry for the late log, but during our [journey around the world](hoppundweg.piekar.de) we could log all cache "in time"

On our way to Owhango we came here, had a look at the old "mill" and found the cache.
A weekend road trip of epic proportions. Gap (of Fap and Gap) and I plan to carve our way through the Waikato, Manawatu-Wanganui and Taranaki Regions while collecting an assortment of caches for various challenges we are working on. Should be a fun excursion... Day 2 and the long ride homeward.
An easy stroll across the paddock to ground zone. After a brief check of some likely spots, the cache was soon discovered. Enjoyed reading the story behind this location and cache. TFTC.

It's certainly interesting to learn about such historical places. But unfortunately we weren't able to get to its location because some very curious BULLS kept us from getting close to it.

My second day on a cache run to Taranaki together with Slieschke. Today the goal was to explore the Forgotten World Highway and to make our way back to Auckland. We decided to take a longer break in Hamilton to help celebrating its 150th birthday with fireworks and a Time Warp. Quick walk to GZ to claim this smiley. TFTC
A cool spot, got absolutely soaked on the way back to the car. All in the name of fun. TFTC
Well, our 2nd trip along this road in 3 days, and we were half expecting a cache to pop up here. We'd noticed this signpost years ago but didn't realize we could actually walk in here. This time we came prepared with gumboots and dodged the sheep poo across the paddock. What a surprise awaited us, a secret hidden wonderland of green ferns and waterfalls. After finding the cache and an FTF, we wandered around discovering the old remains of the Mill site as drawn on the map and really enjoyed our history lesson. This cache earns a favourite point from us. TFTC.
