TFTC. Sneaky quick day trip to Whyalla on day off work to pick up some caches!

I remember having to wade across Brearley Street in the late 1940s and the road to Pt. Augusta was cut. Obviously there was no levee then.TFTC.
I stumbled about the scrub, myself still just a shrub. In the darkness I sought treasure, but only felt under pressure. But alas it has been found, and my sprites are thus bound.
After arriving in Whyalla with iluvtrekking on a wet and gusty morning we headed out for some caching after setting up in the caravan park. Had a dnf when we were here 3 years ago so happy to correct that today.
Found while visiting Whyalla for a few days with Team Waldron and TeamAstro, with the aim of finding as many caches as possible in Whyalla and surrounds. Day 1 saw us travel up from Adelaide and tour the very scenic coastline around Port Bonython and Point Lowly. On Day 2 we headed out to the Fill In The Gaps (FITG) series, then to Iron Knob and back via the First To Find Power Trail (FTF PT) series. On Day 3 we cached in and around the City of Whyalla, and on Day 4 we made our way out to Whyalla Conservation Park before heading for home. Thanks for the cache IlludiumPU36!
Away for a few days with Featherwaite and Team Astro.
The plan was to get all the whyalla caches as well as the FTF series and the FITG caches.
Nearly got them all, just a few left for next time.

Another cache found during our 2022 South Australia Adventure using Geocaching as our guide.
We had a great time today driving some of the numerous 4WD tracks around Whyalla. Most.

Another day of our celebrations of birthday week for the cats, Purrfect Di and Mattycat kept on birthday caching to see what we could unwrap in the way of iron triangle log books. Yours was one we found along the way, with the help of Jack. Good fun time for all and an insight into the impact of mint tins on the aussie steel industry [:o)] Most finds were straightforwad, some were a little obscure, and some were just rusting away!!! A good way to keep fit on a warm day.
Hard to imagine it flooding out here, but there are signs the tracks get some rain from time to time!
Sincere thanks to IlludiumPU36 for placing and maintaining this cache on our geo game map
[:o)]
We must note that we certainly do appreciate the way those mint tins age to blend in with the rusty outback earth!!! Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, plastic cracks and mint tins rust!
---
Searching around every day finding and signing using some or all of the resources of GSAK (Geocaching Swiss Army Knife), Whereyougo, Garmin Montana 750i, Montana 680t, Etrex 35, Samsung S20+, Samsung S9, with Geocaching App, c:Geo, or Geooh Go, and Android Auto and other maps... or often with just plain old dumb luck Quite a lot of that actually!!!
*Logs are composed and published using GSAK of course.*
---
Please do stay as safe as possible when caching.
Keep a lookout for bogs, snakes, surprise cliffs, boxing roos, wombats, bulldust, and floods,
try not to get tetanus from rusty mint tins and don't fall out of trees...
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- but especially lookout for bugs from alpha to omega !!! . [xx(]
Try to keep Travel Bugs as the only bugs you share and pass on
Now our borders are open - even more important to sanitise and safely distance!!!
Much appreciation of all those placing quality caches out and about around the countryside,
in sensible safe places especially! - it keeps our game safe, fun, and interesting
[^] [:o)] [^]
A great caching start to Twenty Twenty Too

In Whyalla for a weekend of motorsport on the fire crew grabbing caches while in the area TFTC
Spent some time caching today with ilook4geo, in between doing some domestic activities too. All went well and a c0uple of multis were thrown into the mix. It was a good day and some of the caches found really socked it to us. Each log was signed with two more names and we then headed off to continue the hunt. Thank you to IlludiumPU36 for placing this cache which turned out to be a quite easy find.
Continued picking up some more of the caches available around Whyalla today, together with goingplaces2. Did more on the outskirts rather than in town. Had a good day and added some more smileys to the map. TFTC.
Full time nomads since 2014. Still tootling around the country trying to avoid Covid hotspots.
Back in SA for harvest work. Heading to Port Pirie but 4 days ahead of schedule so a quick detour to Whyalla was in order. There sure is a lot of puzzles here! Glad we had done the solving before arriving in town. 35 from 37 hunts today.

Found on our Whyalla holiday with hevwalker.....Davidwazza had joined us for a fun day of caching..... we had been able to get the FTF powertrail completed, lunch in Iron Knob and a few extra caches done and a lovely meal at hevwalkers event at the Eyre Hotel before heading out to get some caches in the backtracks....Wow didn't realise how many backtracks there were out here ...luckily geocaching maps helped us get around without any backtracking tonight...... such a wonderful night for caching with perfect temperatures and clear skies (wow the stars are amazing aren't they... wishing I had my SLR camera and light tools with me....will ensure I bring them next time I visit the area)...... We found the cache after a quick search, signed and replaced before heading off for more smilies... TFTC
In Whyalla with scramping on a mini holiday getaway...
We were joined for the day with Davidwazza...
After my dinner event tonight we decided to do a bit of night caching...
We were now heading out into the Whyalla Backtracks...I do love country caching...you have more freedom without wondering whose watching...
It was a perfect night for it too...warm and dry...

Day 301 (Thursday 25th) of our trip. Caching along the way. In Whyalla today. A total of 50 for the day and 5826 for the trip. TFTC
This weekend, [@jesswrigley](http://coord.info/PRNW59T) and I headed to Point Lowly and Whyalla to scuba dive with the cuttlefish, who annually migrate there over the winter months to breed. The cuttlefish were plentiful, with the largest groups that I had seen from several prior visits there. Whyalla was a good little city, but unfortunately due to COVID-19, a number of steelworks and mine tours had been cancelled in the current times.
Our final day in Whyalla, and so we decided to do some local sightseeing/geocaching around Whyalla's old centre of town. This also involved a drive up a local hill. We then visited a few multi-caches around the area, including Whyalla's airport, and on its outskirts where there were some obvious 4WD and MTB tracks around the place. Our final adventure was a 4WD trip up Mount Laura, of which we had some nice views of the quarry below/nearby. We then detoured to back home via Iron Knob, where again the town was rather quiet, and we couldn't see many views of the nearby mine. It was then time to head home to Adelaide, driving back through Port Augusta.
So this levee is 4 km long to stop the floods! Wow; I guess the area doesn't have the ability for the water to soak. We did manage to find this cache reasonably quickly, with the cache container and logbook in good shape. Thanks IlludiumPU36 for the cache placement and ongoing maintenance.

And number one but the last one for us in this series! Thanks for placing these caches
After Whyalla's best rain in a while i was surprised that the road to this one was quite passable to my Toyota Corolla front-wheel drive 'rice-burner' lol.
Drove up to make a swift find and sign at 12:10 on Sat 15 June 2019.
The cover over this one's actual cache reminds me of a Multi in the central part of Whyalla in a graveyard with the same protection....... both were in prestine condition [^] 'They' sure work that's for sure.

Found at 2:42 PM GAFF1.
After doing a bit of a tour around the area, we found the cache about 12 metres from GZ and replaced it in accordance with the hint right at GZ.
Doesn't look like the CO is interested in doing any maintenance any more as there had been 3 DNF's since December! This is how towns get a bad reputation.
Thanks IlludiumPU36

Quick find for first of this series...
Spending a few days in Whyalla and found a few cache, or 300!
Had managed to solve all the puzzles before coming over too.
Of the nearly 300 found on the trip over and back from Adelaide, 95% were found within 50km of Whyalla Central, with approx a dozen dnfs also. Amongst all the finds was my 17000th find.
Also managed a lot of 'unloved' finds too.
What is it with Whyalla and mint tins? lol
TNLNSL
Thanks

On the road to the Alice Springs Mega with LuckyL10n and Albida33. We headed through Burra and Port Pirie before arriving in Port Augusta for the trek up the highway. Collected a good number of caches and all were found with no issues and the logs were soon signed. (Some logs were signed as S.A.L. to save space.)
Thanks for the cache and fun in getting to it and finding it.

Alice trip 2017. Day 6. With Sol de Lune and LuckL10n we spent today caching around Whyalla during a bit of s detour on our drive to Alice Springs. Heaps of caches with lots of DNFs we skipped but me managed a good day of caching. The caches in the scrub West of whyalla were all on very dusty tracks, but we managed most of them.
Thanks.

#6600 - 16:30; Day 8 of the Alice Mega Road Trip with Sol de lune and albida33, so most logs were signed S.A.L. as a result. Caching in and around Whyalla today and along the roads into and out of town we collected 69 finds and 6 DNFs. We visited many places of interest today in our travels and most of our finds were in good condition. After doing some back road caching to 'fill in the gaps' further south, we were now caching along the back roads to the west of the town and then along the levee. Picked up this cache along the way. Hi there IlludiumPU36.
We found your cache **"Whyalla Levee 1 – The Start"** at 1:46:00 PM today. (This makes our find count 15818).
We cached around the Whyalla area today. On our trek we found a wide variety of container types. & ended up finding 20 caches with 1 DNF's.
Thanks for placing this cache here, without geocaching as our guide we would never have found so many interesting places on our travels.
**Coordinate Accuracy:** We found the cache around 2m from where the GPS said we should be looking.
**Cache Condition:** The container and log book are in good shape.
**Took:** Nothing.
**Left:** A Smiley Badge.
Thanks for the hunt today,
Regards
Ian & Penny.

A great day weather wise .
Today am only locating caches 3LG have not found so will be back hopefully next year for the rest in this series.

After a good nights sleep in the tent we set off to clear the caches placed since we were here last, for the trip i packed the inflatable Kayak, the extendable ladder, waders and the pushbike so we had the equipment for just about any cache, after hiding a few extras along the track we slowly made our way back to Whyalla, we managed to find all but 2 along here so another trip will be in order down the track. I too went to the levee,
but the levee is dry [:o]
Like most of Whyalla, I s'pose
I don't think anyone would notice if you were drinking out here though
And after a short, dry stroll, from a nearby road, I soon found the cache
The camo works well, and thankfully, doesn't smell [^]

I found this cache on a return visit to Whyalla.
I lived here for a year, in 2011/12, before moving to Berri, in the Riverland region of SA.
It was great to revisit the Whyalla area and to explore some of the tracks and trails. TFTC

I was, very generously, offered a trip to Whyalla with Moneydork that was too good to refuse!
Tonight's stop was in Whyalla and between Port Augusta, Iron Knob and Whyalla I found 60 caches but ended the day with the only DNF
We had fun driving the area around the levee to find these caches, with the ups and downs and associated commentary that occurs in a geovehicle while doing drives such as this
Thanks for the fun and the learning, even a former Whyalla resident didn't know what the levee was about

A long, long time ago
I can still remember how that music used to make me smile
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And maybe they'd be happy for a while.
