WA Big Trip Winter 2024. Day 8 - Whyalla Day. I spent the day in the Whyalla area caching to the north and the west. There are plenty of caches around town and I did some including a Lab set along the fore shore. I enjoyed a great walk along the circular jetty. Most of my caching was along the Iron Knob Highway doing more of the trail caches along that part of the road. I did heaps back in 2017 and managed another chunk today. Hot out in the sun, but cool in the shade. I am now getting behind in my logging, so hopefully it will not get much worse. I managed to find a few caches that were DNFd back in 2017, so I am happy about that. From here my day was caching along the highway for as many of these PT caches as I could find, even some I failed on previous attempts. They were all very good GZs and only one was not as expected. Thanks for the cache IlludiumPU3646529.13 TNLNVisited: World Traveling Gold GC A#6 & Crystal Compass Rose 2009 5th Ann Forest A#147**Albida**
On my way to Cowell for a couple of nights. Will finish off a lot more caches around Whyalla on way back
This series has been on my to do list for a few years and today I set out to make my way through most of it, although finding them all as I went it slowly got to 45 degrees according to the car so after a few hours of in and out finding them I stopped, I will be back to finish them off one day. With a few days off I headed over to the northern Eyre peninsula for a 2 night stay in Whyalla, my main aim for the few days was the FITG and the FTF trail plus finding a few caches here and there along the way. Just under 300 caches found for the trip. Thanks for the cache
Second day to complete this great series. Loaded before we left WA
Lying on ground. Sock way past darning!!!

We have settled into the Weeroona Football Club grounds
It has been 10 Years since we last did some of the FTF trail, started off poorly but then we had more success.
We are not used to the S.A saltbush which is so scratchy.
Need some darning on your socks here.
Glad to see this was not a Big Bad Brad cache.
Thankyou to the CO's for placing these caches.

Away for a few days with Featherwaite and Team Astro.
The plan was to get all the whyalla caches as well as the FTF series and the FITG caches.
Nearly got them all, just a few left for next time.

Another cache found during our 2022 South Australia Adventure using Geocaching as our guide.
We decided to have another go at the TFT trail and some others along the way, as there are some new caches since our last trip up this road.
Thanks IlludiumPU36, we had a great time but, there are some we will have to come back for another time

Another day of our celebrations of birthday week for the cats, Purrfect Di and Mattycat kept on birthday caching to see what we could unwrap in the way of iron triangle log books. Yours was one we found along the way, with the help of Jack. Good fun time for all and an insight into the impact of mint tins on the aussie steel industry [:o)] Most finds were straightforwad, some were a little obscure, and some were just rusting away!!! A good way to keep fit on a warm day.
So we hit some more of the f t f p t and that took a large chunk of the day! Glad to have that little bit of the map clear now. Some were easily found from the side track and others better from the main road, some were just a little buried, one had two caches with a recent throwdown right by the original! All were a bit of fun to add to our day.
Thankfully this wasn't a tribute to BBB. [:o)]
Sincere thanks to IlludiumPU36 for placing and maintaining this cache on our geo game map
[:o)]
We must note that we certainly do appreciate the way those mint tins age to blend in with the rusty outback earth!!! Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, plastic cracks and mint tins rust!
---
Searching around every day finding and signing using some or all of the resources of GSAK (Geocaching Swiss Army Knife), Whereyougo, Garmin Montana 750i, Montana 680t, Etrex 35, Samsung S20+, Samsung S9, with Geocaching App, c:Geo, or Geooh Go, and Android Auto and other maps... or often with just plain old dumb luck Quite a lot of that actually!!!
*Logs are composed and published using GSAK of course.*
---
Please do stay as safe as possible when caching.
Keep a lookout for bogs, snakes, surprise cliffs, boxing roos, wombats, bulldust, and floods,
try not to get tetanus from rusty mint tins and don't fall out of trees...
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- but especially lookout for bugs from alpha to omega !!! . [xx(]
Try to keep Travel Bugs as the only bugs you share and pass on
Now our borders are open - even more important to sanitise and safely distance!!!
Much appreciation of all those placing quality caches out and about around the countryside,
in sensible safe places especially! - it keeps our game safe, fun, and interesting
[^] [:o)] [^]
A great caching start to Twenty Twenty Too

TFTC. Day 2 of our Whyalla geocaching trip and we decided to tackle the FTF - PT series from Whyalla to Iron Knob.
Having previously completed the Iron Knob end of the trail, it was time to do the rest!
Unless already logged with a “note”, caches and logs were in good condition.
Happy caching and safe travels!

Goal to pick up approx 40. Quite the marathon with muggle husband. This will be a generic post. A couple I couldn’t get lids off or were too wet or no logs. Unfortunately I wasn’t prepared. Was a last minute decision. Thank you for taking the time & placing them. Tftc
Full time nomads since 2013. Still tootling around the country trying to avoid Covid hotspots.
Back in SA for harvest work. Heading to Port Pirie but 4 days ahead of schedule so a quick detour to Whyalla was in order. Headed out early today with lunch hoping to convert some to Not altogether successful, but still managed 39finds from 41 hunts.

A day set aside to explore FITG series and a few others along the road, a cool dry day had us scratchin our heads at some and spotting the obvious at others a few novelties get us on our toes, unless otherwise mentioned all caches were found in great condition with one DNF today
Having finished the series with some daylight we decided a quick run over to Iron Knob then head down the FTF series clearing a few we had missed on a previous visit some years back, with the sun setting it was down to torchlight which made the task a little easier and the chance to rectify a few DNFs as well

On a road trip around the Mid North and Eyre Peninsula, geocaching as I go. Predominantly targeting old caches, solved mysteries and grabbing some interesting looking traditionals.
Super windy on the road out to Iron Knob so I only stopped for a few caches in this power trail.
All caches were found in good condition unless stated otherwise.
Thanks for the cache IlludiumPU36.

Today was a big day of caching on my bike on the Iron Knob road. Geohusband and the hound were vehicle assisting me in the motor home. It was great for my morning tea and lunch stops. Cycled about 15kms and found about 50 caches for the day.
Finished the day in the city collecting a couple of must do caches and dinner at the pub. Our friends think we are mad having a day of our holidays in Whyalla but they don’t geocache .
TFTC and being a part of this great series.

This weekend, I headed to Whyalla to catch up with a few other Geocachers and attempt some of the trails there. On Saturday, we targeted the FTF power trail from Whyalla to Iron Knob, and then spent the evening and the subsequent morning driving some of Whyalla's back tracks. On Sunday, I visited Cowleds Landing and back north, only to get severely bogged in one of Whyalla's clay pans. I then returned home via the August series.
Today, I joined hevwalker and scramping with our goal to complete the FTF power trail. We got 75% through before taking a break for lunch in Iron Knob, and then completed the remaining geocaches, finishing in the early afternoon. We then visited the new Whyalla circular jetty, and then had dinner at the Eyre Hotel geocaching event. Finally, we headed out for a quick stop at Whyalla Conservation Park, and then headed around the tracks around the levee finding miscellaneous geocaches, all within a nice and balmy evening.
A quickish find at this location. The cache container and logbook were in good shape. Thanks IlludiumPU36 for the cache placement and ongoing maintenance.

On hevwalker and our Whyalla holiday.....Davidwazza joined us for a fun day of caching..... with clear skies and warm weather we set off with the aim to do some of the FTF power trail. Our plan was to get as many as possible in the day. My aim was to beat my previous record of 106 in a day.....yes...smashed it thanks to my friends and our quick finds. TFTC
In Whyalla with scramping on a mini getaway holiday...
Today Davidwazza joined us as we set about finding all the caches in the FTF PT series and any others that got in our way
Most of the caches we located quickly and easily...I did say most...the rest took a minute or 2 more...
The day was warm and the sky was blue as we made our way to Iron Knob...

Day 301 (Thursday 25th) of our trip. Caching along the way. In Whyalla today. A total of 43 for the day and 5819 for the trip. TFTC
Headed out early to do the FTF series of caches. It proved to be slow going up to around #80 with a high proportion of containers in a poor state. We replaced log sheets and some containers that were broken but we soon ran out of supplies. This section, particulary those on the side heading to Iron Knob are in desparate need of maintenance. However we faired ok with only a couple of dnf's. Ran out of daylight so have only a few to finish off tomorrow. Thanks to all the CO's for placing these caches.
I had a sticky-beak at the goodies up ahead in this PT and saw an Easy attempt at my 1st Mystery for the day with 2 Trads either side of it that had some relevance to it's final, so i assumed anyway lol

A quick find here as I head back into town on the FTF trail...
Spending a few days in Whyalla and found a few cache, or 300!
Had managed to solve all the puzzles before coming over too.
Of the nearly 300 found on the trip over and back from Adelaide, 95% were found within 50km of Whyalla Central, with approx a dozen dnfs also. Amongst all the finds was my 17000th find.
Also managed a lot of 'unloved' finds too.
What is it with Whyalla and mint tins? lol

Thanks

An opportunity to catch up and do some caching with friends as we headed west. A great day was had by all. TFTC
Teamed up with Hurtle and H423L to locate this one when passing through Whyalla to the west. We did not have the 3 days he had so made most of the time we had for a quick tour to acquaint myself with the town I love. I worked here for 4 years and made so many friends. So many memories in all the spots and places I drove past on the way to this find. We headed up the road to the Iron Knob soak out of town for the few final finds.
Thanks to IlludiumPU36 and **clear skies** from TeamAstro. [^] Cache the planet! [:o)]
Day 5 of the Perth to Adelaide trip where we started in Whyalla and ended in Adelaide.
Today was about finding as many caches as possible and starting / warming up to the larger power trails that bought us over here.
We completed the FTF series and the Letterbox caches.
During the morning we found the majority of the days caches, some highly favourited first up also.
Anyway the day has time limitations to it as we were hosting an event that started at 6pm and as it were we made it there at 5.59pm so early however the crowd of people there before us was rather pleasing.
It was great to see so much energy around Geocaching at the event the Adelaide teams really know how to impress and greet the visitors with a beer, thanks Freddo!

Day 5 of Barnzy and Cravo’s trip from Perth to Adelaide.
Today we travelled from Whyalla to Adelaide via a number of country towns.
We started bright and early just before sunrise to pickup a couple of caches North of Whyalla that had some high favourite points which had tickled our fancy.
We then moved our attention to the FTF power trail, which started just out of Whyalla and took us all the way to Iron Knob. Found a good variety of difficulty and terrain combinations along the trail, with some interesting hiding spots. There were a couple of DNFs and caches that took a while to find which stretched out the time taken to complete the series.
We eventually made our way to Iron Knob and picked up the couple of caches around town which were quite nice in a very small mining town.
We were pushing the time factor quite hard, so skipped a fair few caches, but had to stop in at Port Germain to grab the aptly names Port Germain cache, which filled in a spot on the Jasmer grid, and its where I rolled my ankle running back to the car which made things a bit difficult for the rest of the day.
The other main target for the day was the Postman Pat Letterbox Hybrid Series, which were great quick finds of nicely sized containers.
We left the LBH trail and made our way to quickly check into the accomodation and made our way to our event in Lights Square “Sandgropers in the City”, which we made it to exactly one minute before it started, but a good sized crowd was already waiting to greet us, which was really nice as it was at last minute we had the event published.
It was great to finally put some faces to names we’ve only seen in logs, in particular the SA legend Freddo and TeamAstro. It was very interesting learning of the large scale model of the solar system, of which we had found one of the caches on the Nullarbor on our way over.
After bidding farewell to the event attendees we grabbed a bite of food and walked around the CBD caching, with mixed results.

found it on a trip to Whyalla over the Adelaide cup long weekend. quick find on the slow return home. I thought to make a dent on this power trail and stopped at number 50.
Today we were on the road from Port Augusta to Whyalla and we had planed to do this trail. But it was to much for one day so we did only half of the trail today and tomorrow we will try to do the other half.
We saw that some of the caches were found already more than half a year ago so we expected to have a lot of not founds. But most of the caches we found! It is a very nice trail to do and we say thank you for hiding the caches to all of the cache owners. We enjoyed it and had fun today.
Greetings from team De Kivits, Netherlands.

Team ICE on a two week geocaching trip in Australia. Our main target was the Red Centre Experience at Alice Springs but of course we did some caching in other places too. We drove from Adelaide to Alice Springs and then back. We saw lots of interesting and beutiful places like opal mines at Coober Pedy, Ayers Rock and Kata Tjuta. Our rental travelled almost 6500km on gravel and tarmac roads. The weather was great, only on last day we got some rain.
All the caches logged as Team Ice, T-ice or Tice with kapeka, laalaa and Hiltsu. We had a great trip!
Today our journey continued from Port Augusta to Whyalla and back. Some trail caches and others logged on the way.

We had fun with caching few weeks here in Australia ( South Australia and Northern Territory ). Lots of geocaches and many sort of them too. We saw awesome places, weather was good all the time and people were friendly and polite. Caches were pretty similar like in our home country. Of course there were some exeptions. Nice and huge country!

Alice trip 2017. Day 6. With Sol de Lune and LuckL10n we spent today caching around Whyalla during a bit of s detour on our drive to Alice Springs. Heaps of caches with lots of DNFs we skipped but me managed a good day of caching. With a bit of time in the afternoon left we decided a few of the FTF find series would fill the day nicely.
Thanks.

This was the second day spent picking up more caches along this power trail between Iron Knob and Whyalla. We found most of them with just a few misses for various reasons. We enjoyed finding these caches and were very happy to pick up some more unloved caches. Thank you to IlludiumPU36 for placing this cache.

**Coordinate Accuracy:** We found your cache around two metres from where the GPS said we should be looking.
**Cache Condition:** The container and log book are in good shape.
**Took:** Nothing.
**Left:** Nothing.
Thanks for the hunt today,
Regards
Ian & Penny.
Heading out of Why-Why-Why-Whyalla this morning ....
[green]I saw the cache symbol on the right as passed by the GeeZed !!
I saw the flickering shadows of cache on the roadside
She was my cache find!!
As she deceived me I searched and went out of my mind !! [:o]
Why-Why-Why-Whyalla,
Why-Why-Why-Whyalla,
I-I-I could see that cache was no good for me.
But I was lost like a slave that no DNF could free !!
At near mid-day when I drove this way,, I was waiting
I crossed the road to GZ and searched for the spoor !!
Others ... had stood there laughing.
I felt the GPS in my hand and I laughed no more
Why-Why-Why-Whyalla
Why-Why-Why-Whyalla
So before I spend hours more ...
Forgive me Whyalla, I just couldn't search any more !! [:o]
The cache hung there laughing.
I felt the pencil in my hand and it laughed no more ...
Why-Why-Why-Whyalla
Why-Why-Why-Whyalla ??
So ... before they come to break down the door !!
Forgive me Whyalla, this cache was just found on the floor !!
Forgive me Whaylla, I just couldn't take any more[/green]
So after finding the cache on the floor, I put it back somewhere a bit higher ...
... like Tom's vioice

I was, very generously, offered a trip to Whyalla with Moneydork that was too good to refuse!
Tonight's stop was in Whyalla and between Port Augusta, Iron Knob and Whyalla I found 60 caches but ended the day with the only DNF
I'd done some of the PT on this road a bit over 2 years ago and so it turned out that both Moneydork and I had found different caches along the route.
We stopped at those that he hadn't found as well as a few for me
A day of interesting hides that had us working for the find as well as some easier ones that almost fell into our hands. [^]
Thanks to all the hiders and the maintainers for the day of fun and smiles

As a past resident of Whyalla who is now an infrequent visitor, I just had to get up to date on finds on this power trail so that the Iron Knob road is now free of unfound caches.
I traveled directly to Iron Knob rather than coming to Whyalla fro Port Augusta and did all of the outstanding caches on my way in to town, accompanied by Locuscache from Adelaide.
TFTC - Thanks for the cache.

TK2 will be impressed. BBB not so much.

Catching up on some late, very late and extremely late logs (400 in all)
I would like to thank IlludiumPU36 for placing this cache. I always enjoy getting out and about to view this great country of ours and caching allows me to do that. Once at GZ, I sometimes find the cache quickly but sometimes it takes awhile to sus out the well camouflaged hide. Once found, log is signed and the cache is rehidden as found.
Once again thanks IlludiumPU36.

A quick find, and an opportunity to earn a Souvenir today, Thanks IlludiumPU36 for the cache.TNLNSL.
When we looked last night, we were surprised to see that a Found loh had still to be published for this and another recently published cache. So our firts task today was to look for these caches before heading down the road to Iron Knob. This time we knew that "sock" meant sock and it was a much faster find. The cache and contents were in good condition. However, it wasn't a matching sock - this seems a good way to use unpaired socks. The logbook already had many entries but all were dated prior to the publication of the Mk2 version of this cache. We have assumed that this is the recycled logbook from the Mk1` version and that we were first to find Mk2. Hence, we will claim {FTF} at 7:45. Thanks IlludiumPU36 for the hide. PS we came in a motorised division, not by Shank's Pony.
