What an adventure this one was! Dragged out the reluctant geotween Aurora11511 to come with me and off we set, in search of the fountain of youth, I mean, the geocache. We deliberately picked this day as nice and dry. Even so, a few areas were boggy due to the nature of the area. The going was undulating but fun. The cache took longer to find than necessary, as we were looking for the very end, which was further than we needed to go. The cache was out in the open, so easy enough to find if you keep your eyes peeled. No digging around required. If you get to the garden/rubbish, you're off piste. GPS said 8m away when we were at the cache. Left Gandalf's staff near the beginning for the next adventurer(s)! TFTC JJinNZ
What a journey the path from the upper lake trail following the stream line is a bit dodgy to say the least the poor dog with her corgi legs struggled. Once at the GZ took about 10 minutes to find because the co-ords were bouncing all over the show. Once I did find it I was apparently about 12m out. The hint makes for an easier find thankfully!
Out and about today with a bit of spare time, and I decided to take a walk here to have a look for this geocache. A very fun wee expedition through some suburban bush. The cache was found safe and well, exactly where it was supposed to be.---Thanks to JJinNZ for placing and maintaining this cache. I enjoy each and every cache I find, and it is only with Geocachers like this creating them and placing them out in the world that this wonderful game continues.[DGSc-Bulk] tagging to help me generate a list for GC30AD8 - DGSc Challenge.
#145. Whitby caches have been really fun. Including this one. Worth the walking adventure. Ill give this one a fav pt for the effort and location.TFTC.
I'm back?
Since my nasty DNF comment, JjinNZ was nice enough to consult with me over a number of days about this cache and its location.
It was my fault for using Google Maps to locate by coordinates. Which by default would route you the quickest way to a coordinate.
Unfortunately, it would direct you via a private driveway.
(I have since created waypoints for anyone else needing them (see below))
It was my ignorance of the area and laziness that I didn't try to think of another way around to the cache.
For this, I apologize sincerely to JjinNZ for the harsh comment.
And to anyone else who this may have affected.
I learned that the reasoning for this location was to show people "Whitby's unknown mini waterfall!"
So go check that out!
The hide itself is clever, too.
TFTC
Cheers
PS: Waypoints I suggest if needed.

Sorry, but I didn't like this one at all.
First, I had to go up someone's driveway, jumping someone's fence and into someone else's backyard?
Is this your backyard, JjinNZ?
Once I got there, there was a bin, a tarpoline, bricks, bottles, buckets, pipes, etc, but the only thing I thought of that didn't belong there was ME!
Heard voices from the house, so I left and didn't want to pursue.
It's probably one of the very last ones I'll come back for. If I do at all.

A gorgeous day in Whitby, and the footing is good, so came looking for this one. Nearly went too far as GPS struggled to catch up, but avoided blundering into a back yard. I knew that I was in the right spot, but took some hunting to find the odd one out. FP from me for a clever hide. Tftc!
DNF. Area was too muddy to make it all the way up the path with the family. We'll try again on a dry / sunny day.
Hard to say where the stream ends. We floundered around for a while before zeroing in on the hide. TFTC
Spotted the likely track go detour off the main track and it was fairly well formed.
Took a few minutes once GPS settled down, a lot closer to the river than expected. Replaced the log sheet as it was unusable.
Worth a FP for a great container and taking us to a spot we would never have visited were there not a cache there.

Nice easy find for us. We explored this area during the lockdown... back on a rare weekend at home to grab a cache or two. TFTC
Sveppi and I changed jobs a couple of years ago and we ended up moving to this region and buying a house in Aotea. In the early weeks I explored by car all around the region, house shopping. I drove a fair bit around Whitby and always liked the look and feel of the place. Our weekends are mostly spent out tramping and hunting deep in the bush, but the Covid Lockdown allowed us to finally do some exploring close to home, although of course we were not allowed to log geocaches. This weekend is a rare "at home" weekend for us, and we decide to revisit the upper lake, our first visit was in April during lockdown. Nice sunny day, it's a bit windy but 18 degrees so definitely feels like spring!
This kind of "off track" is easy going for us. Sveppi spotted the cache straight away when I stopped and said "4 meters"! Unfortunately the log is wet, mouldy, and we were not able to sign it.

I love how the clue works for this one! Worth noting that it’s easy to stumble into someone’s back yard, but you don’t want to.
Log is wet and a little rotten looking, but managed to sign it.
Thanks for the excuse to find another of Whitby’s secret places!

Looked around for a while before spotting this.
Had an idea what to look for but my hunch wasn’t exactly correct (but close !)
Great to explore these relatively unused areas, thanks

After a little bit of tricky terrain, we got close, though we were a little confused at first, because it was right in the open, though Dad, and I didn't realise that it was the cache until later. TFTC
-Note: The log book is quite wet and a peice has torn off.

now that I'm a premium member I am able to award favourite points, so I'm awarding some to the more memorable and enjoyable caches that I've found, added a favourite point for this one for the nice location
It was an afternoon of picking up some caches in the Whitby and Papakowhai areas. I parked up on Exploration Way and headed down to the lakeside track. Starting up alongside the creek was quite pleasant, spotting quite a bit of birdlife, including a Kererū (which I added to the Great Kererū Count). It then got a bit trickier making my way up - this certainly earns it's terrain rating.
Reached GZ and spent a bit of time hunting around. There's plenty of items on top of the plateau that don't belong here, but none of them were the cache. I hunted around a bit more, almost giving up, when I spotted something else that didn't belong, and revealed the cache. Logsheet was wet and I didn't have a replacement, but I managed to make a mark.
Despite growing up in Whitby, I never really came to this part, and certainly never made it up this far. Thanks for the adventure, and TFTC

(# 4850). Woke up very early this morning and no matter how hard I tried I couldn't get back to sleep. So I hauled myself out of bed and decided to grab a few caches before the real world woke up. Park up above and walked my way along the track then up the stream bed. A very nice walk indeed with the Tui's greeting me all along my walk. A quick find as I looked around and saw something of interest. Pleased there was no rain of late as I kept my feet dry. Everything in order. TFTC
Really enjoyed this one, I grew up in Whitby but never knew this was here, a fun little adventure, wish the kids had been here they would have enjoyed it
Really enjoyed the wee walk to this one. Took a bit of searching at cache site as phone not working well. Cache all good. TFTC
Peaceful streamside meander and watched some fishy inhabitants. With wandering GPSs we followed our respective noses at top. I found the empty film canister, D the cache. Thanks jjinnz!
B and I hiked up the stream and spent some time examining likely hiding places. Reading previous logs I got a good idea of what to look for, and spotted something interesting. Lo and behold, the cache! TFTC
Nice fairly quick find while back in the area today.
Pleased to find after a DNF here a year ago.
Great weather and thanks for the fun cache. SL

Found after a nice walk up the stream. Quite a surprise in such a built up area. TFTC
After a brisk walk up the river I spotted the likely place right away, but was put off further investigation by spiders. After some more searching and reading previous logs, I returned to my first guess and was proven right (after gently brushing the new occupants away with a stick). Found with emzo and rubydoos, tftc!
Tidying up a DNF from a few weeks ago.
I'd been misled by the GPS and the hint, and found something that seemed to fit, but had no log. I'd not had access to recent logs while at GZ, so at a subsequent review of DNFs I found information therein that indicated where I'd gone wrong.
Returning today I spotted the hide as I approached. An easy find, quick sign & replace

Looked for 20 minutes with phone GPS constantly changing its mind. Then suddenly a good lock and I found the old film canister, A couple of minutes later the description and hint made sense. Very clever. TFTC.
I followed the stream to GZ where I found a number of objects that could match the hint. The GPS signal was haphazard and my phone kept changing its mind about where to look. It finally settled on a location where I found an object that would match the hint and the size of the cache, but which had no lid and no log.
Photos sent to the CO to see if this was indeed the cache. If not, I'll have to go back for a better look!

Intermittent heavy showers in town today so I was rather surprised to arrive in Whitby to perfectly dry roads, sometimes it's better not to let a little rain put you off. A nice easy, and rather pleasant, walk to the cache here today which was a quite find as my GPSr zoomed in at the exact location. A most enjoyable cache to do, and I found the Whitby history in the cache description most interesting thank you.

Interesting walk up the stream after logging the final of a puzzle cache nearby. Easy find before climbing up to a driveway at the head of the canyon. TFTC! Gets a fave for the explore factor.
A really interesting walk in this area - totally unexpected around here.It took a few minutes to locate the cache, but got it easily enough in the end. Thanks for the nice little walk.

An interesting experience! The stream walk was excellent, such a hidden area in a residential neighbourhood. Found the film cannister and after a hunt pretty much gave up. Then on the way back down saw some suspicious rocks and thought it was worth checking - there it was! Its hard to get accurate co-ords in the bush and certainly GZ hopped about a bit, so any additional information useful. Also think this area worthy of a trad size cache! TFTC
On a sunny dry afternoon we decide to take a look for this cache. We found the film container and after referring to the CO's info looked further and spotted the new cache location. The hint is perfect once located. Thanks CO for taking us to this place that we have never visited before.
Muggled cache replaced. For those who have visited before I have moved this 2m. Gz still accurate.
Note this GC has gone walkabouts. I will replace in the next week or so, this will include a relocation of the cache position.
Good walk up to the cache area.
Searched for about 20 minutes and was just leaving when I found a film canister at the bottom of the bank, with no top or log - if that was the container then I found it and placed it up the bank under a stone.

I enjoyed the ramble up the stream to GZ. as I was standing there thinking jeez I wish I was using my GPS and not my phone when I spotted something that piqued my interest. Yeah that fits. Found. TFTC
Well it was a gorgeous little stroll, but to wear a hungry toddler for a "quick" grab and not being snacks. We made it to 6m from GZ, possibly even closer, but even after a quick feed he still was not happy, so had to leave the scrambling and searching for another day. Was an interesting climb down for us. Such a shame to come so close!
Navigating a path up the stream was a lot of fun but at GZ the GPS was nigh on useless. Spent a bit of time looking at so many possible hides - all in the wrong place. Having given up and beating a retreat I saw something extremely unusual and clearly related to the cache title. Very clever and earns a fave point. Last adventure was dropping the cache lid and watching it roll down the bank. Made sure to watch it carefully on its descent so was a quick clamber down to retrieve it.
This one took a little longer than expected, looked and looked but no signs of anything eruption related. Then I spotted an old plastic chemical container, and thought 'yes!'. But noooo... Just rubbish filled with water There was also a tennis ball grave located at GZ. I found 4 balls all within 30cm of each other that had been washed ashore and died... Very sad indeed. But then, heyho! Is that the eruption related cache I spy? And yes... there it was. TFTC, and the very cool track.
With names like Discovery, Exploration, Adventure, Navigation, Longitude, Latitude, Endeavour & Compass, it is clear that a geocacher was responsible for assigning titles to the street names in Whitby.
I chose a very nice evening to attempt this cache and I enjoyed the walk to ground zero. It took a wee while for my GPSr to tell me exactly where I needed to head and I was pleased to find the nicely hidden cache - I needed to be quite close to it to see it.

#1913. Headed up to Whitby this evening to find a couple of caches. This one looked intriguing so headed down the footpath to the bridge. The walk up the stream proved to be a lot easier than the cache I did yesterday in Tyers Stream. I was starting to think the terrain rating was a bit high but the last 50m did become a bit rougher and the cache hide itself requires a bit of a scramble. At the GZ I looked around for a few minutes for something that might fit with the title theme. I then spied something that needed closer inspection and soon had the cache in hand. Signed the dry log and replaced the cache with a little bit more natural camo around it. A nice forest walk although the stream was bit smelly for some reason today. Thanks for the cache.
Now this is what I call a cache and an adventure. Mycro Man loved the walk (or rather climb, slide, slither, river jump, etc) to this cache. Very impressed he made it all the way to the end and up to the cache. Lovely container. Thanks for the cache. Deserves a favourite
Cache # 3,039 - Originally thought about going after this one when first published, then decided it was worth holding onto for a nice afternoon with a few other cachers. Turned out to be a morning, but a brilliant one to do with Violet Butterfly and Astro Hunter. Last 50 metres was definitely the hardest, and fortunately the GPS finally picked up the coordinates even with the tree cover. Taking our time and enjoyed watching the tuis and fantails, we made this into a leisurely hour adventure. Nicely done container at the end, and not too hard to find. TNLNSL. TFTC!

A nice hike today with The Wandering Dragons and Violet Butterfly. Enjoyed the trip immensely, even if, with my small stature, I had to climb under a few things the others climbed over. I was the one to find the cache, so super excited about that. Took nothing. Memorable for sure. Thank you!

#7484. Parked on Exploration Way for a little exploration on and off the Whitby Upper Lake Walkway. The walkway and GZ were all quiet this morning. Managed to keep our feet dry. Quick find. Nice hide. Now we understood the name. The cache was in excellent condition, all nice and dry inside. Took nothing, left nothing, signed log.
Returned to the walkway and continued to have a nice stroll round the Upper Lake. Interesting to know that fishing was strictly catch and release here. We did not see anyone fishing today though.

First cache of the year and quite a pleasant one at that. Had gone prepared for wet feet not knowing what state the creek would be in or the number of time to cross but the end, the only dampness was from the sweat from the heat of the day.
Followed the GPS which was a bit erratic under the trees while moving up the stream. When I couldn't go any further and stopped to have a look about, it started to settle down and pointed out the direction to go to get the cache. Following the numbers and arrow, I soon had the cache in hand. Log signed it was then a wander back down the creek.
Thanks for the cache and the interesting walk along the stream. Haven't been up here before and if it wasn't for the cache would probably never have visited the spot. Isn't caching wonderful for introducing one to new places.

It took us quite a while to find this one as our 2 GPS's were all over the place. Frustrating when this happens because the cache, when we got to the right spot, was a very easy find. Thanks for placing a cache in this area, first time we've been here and didn't know it existed.
This was a really good trek but was a hit easy to find I was a little bit dissapoibted
The weather was unexpectedly good this afternoon so I decided to spend a few hours, get some exercise, and find a few of the new caches in the area. Had a few hiccups finding the best entrance to the track, what appeared to be the optimum one on my map turned out to be a private driveway. Returned down the road a bit to where there was a sign at another entrance and it was then an easy and pleasant walk to GZ. No problems finding the cache, it was in the first place I checked, and I now see the connection with the cache name! Signed log, thanks for the nicely set up cache and for showing me this pleasant little spot amongst all the houses.
Despite there being no real track walking up the stream was not difficult except for one section 39 m before the cache. We had a look around here in case the GPS had stopped working but eventually decided the GPS was fine and we were still short of GZ. The final location was much better and the co-ordinates were spot on. A good off track adventure at least on a dry day!
TFTC. A much needed 'E' cache for a challenge I'm working on...and a surprisingly pleasant walk along the stream, despite yesterday's rain.
I very much enjoyed the stroll along the stream this afternoon. It was pretty straightforward and I'd advise others not to be put off by the T4 rating. The cache was a quick find at GZ thanks to the helpful hint.
Thanks very much for the cache.
Thanks very much for the cache.
Really needed a cache for the day so even though it was dark and drizzly and a T4, we decided to give it a go. Enjoyed the walk, no troubles getting there or finding the cache, nicely done FP from me
Off I scuttled not looking at the all important terrain rating till I was already committed in my fancy work clothes oh well looks like a possible ftf. and low and behold I find said cache only to find I was pipped to the post that will explain the footprints in the mud. Haha oh well 2tf will have to do for today. And I got back in under 15 min clean as a whistle. Tftc
Lots of bad decisions, and being teamed up with a bichon who didn't suit the terrain wasted a lot of time. Puzzled over the hint because there were three of the geographical features and plenty of the other things, and I was having to rely only on my cellphone GPS, but once found it was all obvious, as was the name of the cache.
Thought I must be 2TF (after Justine?) so puzzled that jojo&dobby are.
TFTC - good to have another one in Whitby. Giving it a favourite.
