As a kid Mrs Kookacrew always thought it was something to do with the sport of Boxing that gave December 26th its name, aaand look what she found on google ........
World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Tommy Burns was finally enticed to fight challenger Jack Johnson at the Sydney Stadium in Rushcutters Bay, Boxing Day 1908. The fight was to change the history of boxing with Johnson crowned the first black Heavyweight World Champion.
When Jack Johnson, standing just over six feet tall and possessing a well-muscled physique, climbed into the ring at the Sydney Stadium on Boxing Day in 1908, the 20,000 strong crowd was certain he was going to lose. The fact that his opponent for this World Heavyweight Boxing Championship bout, Tommy Burns stood only five foot seven was immaterial; for Burns was white and the darling of the crowd and Johnson, the challenger was black. .
For two years Johnson had pursued Burns around the world attempting in vain to get the champ to fight him. Heavyweight champions in those days were white, drawing the “colour line” as it was called in their refusal to fight African American boxers. It was only through the intervention of colourful entrepreneur Hugh D McIntosh who changed the course of boxing history when he staged this fight that the line was breached. “Mac” as his friends called him, asked Burns how much money he would need to fight Johnson. Burns plucked a seemingly outrageous figure from the air, £6000 and was shocked when McIntosh thrust out his hand and the deal was done.
Sydney was engrossed in the details of the preparation leading up to the fight. Johnson, who was originally to be paid only £1000 for the fight, took up camp at the Sir Joseph Banks Hotel in Botany while Burns retreated to a cottage at Medlow Bath in the Blue Mountains. Johnson was by far the more entertaining subject for the press and was reported engaging in stunts such as chasing a wallaby around an enclosure until the hapless marsupial collapsed from exhaustion. He was also portrayed as a “capering negro” by the press with equal amounts of fascination and disgust. Burns on the other hand was sketched by artist Norman Lindsay, thoughtful and Napoleonic, sitting in a lounge chair.
When Boxing Day dawned the crowd at Rushcutters Bay was already huge. Police used sticks to beat the long grass around the perimeter to roust people hoping to sneak in under the bleachers. When Johnson saw the size of the crowd he demanded more money from McIntosh who supposedly drew a pistol from his desk drawer and threatened to shoot him. Johnson was eventually paid an extra £500.
Footage of the fight shows the punters faith in Burns was wildly misplaced. Johnson can be seen toying with Burns over the 14 rounds the fight lasted. He smiles and goads Burns while in the clinches. On the other hand a hopelessly outclassed Burns seems grateful for the chance to sit down between rounds and also for the champagne his seconds pour over him and massage into his fast tiring muscles.
The police eventually called a stop to the fight, suspecting Burns had a broken jaw and many believe to end the spectacle of the now former white champ receiving further punishment. Strangely the footage stops too, just as the police enter the ring, perhaps in an attempt to hide the outcome to future audiences.
The result of the fight sent shockwaves around the world. Jack London, who reported on the bout for the world’s press coined the phrase “The great white hope” when wondering who would take the challenge up to Johnson. The answer to that question was several years away but the fight had ensured the Sydney Stadium was now the greatest stadium in the world and had crowned the first African American as World Heavyweight Champion.
So there ya go ... It is named after boxing haha. Thanks Lib for another cache in the series. TNLNSL

In Port Elliott today, great day for caching, back to McLaren Vale today to finish off the December run before the heat hits later this week. TFTC
Put the sweat wheels on the car today and headed south, with primary aim being a couple of trads left in the O'Halloran Hill Recreation Park which is in my 42K circle from home. After that I headed further south to the December OTD series where the bike would also be useful. Ended up finding all 25 left in the series.
Thanks LíB for the cache and the series.

With the intention of the day to be to turn blue DNF faces into yellow Smileys, this one was the 1st i wanted to do.
(Boxing Day... The Greatest day on the sporting calendar, to me, with the Boxing Day Test Match at the MCG each year........ I LOVE IT!)
This time, with some bodily torsion happening, it was a quick find and sign. {Head Slap! how did i miss that last time? [:o)]}

Out on short caching trip with F-Llama. We initally ended up at the wrong level for this one, but managed to make the find after a 5min search. TFTC
Out caching with Miss_Bovine before headed to Aldinga. Tried a few different approaches for this one before thankfully making the find. Would be difficult at peak times! TFTC
Yesterday [21 June] i had planned to go south again on the Monday, but to not drive or ride.
Train was the choice of transport today, Monday 22 June 2020.
Arrived at Seaford Meadows railway station and walked to where i thought the cache was. There was a number of possibilities where it could be. I tried all spots but still came up empty handed. Oh well on to the next one.
It never fills me with confidence starting the day with a DNF ha ha [B)]
[After my days caching i came back to this station to catch the train home and thought i'd have another go after finding a container in ths series, them being all the same, meaning there's was a much more likely place it was gonna be, so when i arrived back to Seaford Meadows there were Muggle workers near GZ, so it's gonna have to wait]

Drizzly day for caching. At least no chance of slithery creatures! Another OTD knocked off. Love this series. Nice natural camo for this one. Hidden in plain sight - love it. TFTC 3LG (Lib!)
Out on the Shonky bicycle for a ride along the Seaford line with Uni and Medusa. The idea being to catch the train to Seaford and ride back and cache asking the way. Found this one after a short search.
Thanks for the cache.
Thanks for the cache.
I ended up spending most of the day down south with gridge98 targeting new-ish caches around Willunga and McClaren Vale. The breakfast club event at Morphett Vale meant there was a reason to come this way, and the first part of the morning was a little sporadic before we did a few of the Cats and Dogs series, and then tried to clean out Willunga. A nice day out with just over 50 finds.
Gridge98 and I were here nearly a year ago (1/09/2018) when we were riding this trail and had a DNF here. Well it turned out that our suspicions were correct on this one, and that the geocache was in fact not here. A CO visit and consequent replacement meant that we could convert this frowny into a smilie whilst in the area. All good, thanks 3LG/LiB.

We popped in here to turn the frown upside down, this wasn’t here last time as Davidwazza made this was an easy find
Out for the day down south to solely go to the 3rd breakfast club event, with not much of a plan other than to just find caches Davidwazza and I set out to find cache around McLaren Vale/Wilunga area. A nice day out with just over 50 finds.

Third time lucky with this one and with help from middle cacher found quite quickly. TFTC
Unfortunately the previous cacher has not found GZ. The photo of zip ties are not from the cache. It is not in plain sight.
Actually found yesterday with longjohn24 but cant log till i get home and the other notes had me thinking i had mixed this up with the previous cache which we had overshot so i had to go back to check, bonus, found the missing cache today , this one was an uncomfortable find. Tftc
Good find! Took us a little bit. First names in the new paper ️

On a day of scattered showers, gridge98 and I decided to grab our bikes and do some of the December OTD series from Noarlunga.
This cache was the first of the day, but no matter how hard we looked, we couldn’t find the cache. We even messaged a previous finder, who gave us some good clues to its location, but I suspect the cache has gone missing with a pest control replacement. Will be watching this one.

Last month when I looked for this it was a day after a geocaching accident and I was feeling very sorry for myself. Had a dnf here after spending quite sometime looking for the cache. Today we returned after a lovely lunch in McLaren Vale and made the find in the first place I checked. Today we have converted 4 x dnf TFTC still a couple more to find in this series.
Found during a very pleasant day cycling along part of the Coast to Vines Rail Trail, enjoying the exercise, searches and scenery. Thanks for the cache 3LG!
It was my very first geocache found. I just recently went on a camp where it was introduced to students in a camp form. I decided to have a go exactly a week later. How fun was it finding my first.
I had attended the Adelaide 500 at the weekend and had the whole day today to do some annual caching in SA as my flight was later tonight. After a most of day with Brisal5, I was meeting up with Firesafe for the rest of the day til my flight home.
Picking up a few along this trail. He had already found this one so it was quickly located and log signed. TFTC 3LG
