Smile Found - Mrs McMike2012 & I now live full-time in our caravan & travel the country visiting places we want to visit we are currently parked up at the NZMCA Park in Bell Block, New Plymouth decided wed go for a drive up to the North Egmont Visitor Centre & do a couple of the short walks, pick up the DoC Kiwi Guardian & see about some caches after missing the track to the Trig on the way up, it was more easily spotted on the way back down Mrs McMike2012 went the 5 or 10m back down to the seats & lookout, leaving to head up to the Trig a bit of bush bashing required as the track is a bit overgrown but the cache was easily found, log-book completed & safely returned pleased to add another 'smiley face' to the tally TFTC ... Being a surveyor by profession I'm quite fond of the old trig stations and always get a little buzz from finding them, especially when on holidays!

We were completing the Pouakai Crossing and this was the first cache i looked for on the walk. Found the sneaky track up to the trig and soon had CIH.
Found a TB caught up amongst the log book I decided to move on.
Thanks for a great cache, fantastic views!

While on a mission this morning to see the sunrise finally remembered to look for a way up here and found it easily and boy was I happy to see a pencil in the cache as I had no pen …
Great to have another mountain cache ticked off, inside was full of water but the bags were doing their job as log was still dry.
Water emptied and dried out contents TFTC

After a summit this morning, my knees didn’t want to walk down the road, so we took this slightly longer way around with this cache in mind.

This trail is awesome, the views and forest after so much more pleasant here than the road. Glad to take the ‘long’ way home.

What happen to the trig? It’s barely feet anymore!

Thanks for the cache and reason to walk this route!

Felt pleased to spot the path. Awesome views!! Tftc

After ring to the summit came this way down. If the doc sign is right it’s only an extra 15 minutes but I think 100 times more interesting than the puffer.

A group of us were walking Pouakai Crossing today and signed in as SEAC to save logbook space, as I can imagine that replacing them could require the whole day..... the sun was out, but the top of the mountain was still in hiding.....staying on the trail still had the GPS 10 meters away, so we de-packed and started a more detailed search, which led us up a side trail to an old trig placement.

The cache is all good here.

TFTC.

Out with my geocaching buddies from Auckland. Group of us were walking Pouakai Crossing today and signed in as SEAC to save logbook space. Thanks for giving us something else keep our spirits up while doing the walk.

25-Apr-21
Team SEAC arrived to conquer the Pouakai Crossing.

We had arranged to leave our cars at the end and arranged a shuttle to take us to the beginning.

After getting ourselves all kitted up we started our walk. The weather looked like it could rain and indeed it did further along the walk. Was a real challenge for us but we all completed it although in various times and the following day I think we were all stiff and sore....

Into our stride now.

Am on way to Holly hut for the night, this will be the first stop along the way. Went to far up the track, then realised I had to find a small track, so back I went to the lookout. That is when I spotted the track to the old trig.

Happy to find cache in the first place I looked. Track a little overgrown, so had to leave pack on ground, so I could squeeze under some of the regrowth.

Thanks for the hide Windyglen Big Grin

At first I searched at the wrong path and looked for an animal thanks to the hint. Then I found the hidden path and climbed up. I don't know what it was but no animal.

In the last few weeks I travelled in New Zealand and visited many different landscapes, sights, geocaches and many highlights in this beautiful country. This geocache was on my way and so I tried to find it. Luckily I could find it rather quickly. Thanks!

We'd never been up to the North Egmont Visitor Centre before. Our last time on the mountain we'd gone for a walk at Dawson Falls. After having a scone and hot drinks for lunch in the cafe we donned our tramping boots and other suitable gear, even though this wasn't going to be a long hike. Wind was cold, but the sun was shining...until we got into the bush. Neither of us much likes steps (older knees) and the track up to GZ is pretty much all steps going the direct route. We reached the lookout and plonked our gear on the seat, Mrs B took some photos and I set off to find the way to get to the old trig. I soon spotted the steps just uphill and followed them. Having read some recent logs I was a bit apprehensive about why crawling would be required. I needn't have worried, just a case of some very low-growing bushes across the track, so I called Mrs B up to follow. It didn't take long to find the cache and sign the log. More photos followed: once Mrs B gets them off the camera I'll post one with my log. Then we crawled back out and headed back to the Visitor Centre. Not via all those steps though. Having passed the Veronica Track (I think it was called) a couple of hundred metres earlier I had checked on the Garmin and could see it would loop back to the Visitor Centre. I suspected it would be much more pleasant with less steps. It was. A very nice return route, some good views as you go, but if you turn round at a point where there are views of lots of dead trees in the gully to the right you get a spectacular view of the mountain looking back up the track. So more photos were taken there too. Sure there were steps and you descend a bit further, then have to climb back to the car park, but I'd recommend it as a great route for this cache if you have the time.
Many thanks Windyglen for setting a cache here. A hiden gem of a place that nobody would ever visit if there was no cache here. The LINZ database for geodetic beacons says the beacon was removed on 18 April 2017. I guess there are many such marks that are no longer useable due to growth of surrounding trees and shrubs.

Well, that was fun!!
Found while walking in Egmont National Park today. A beautiful clear day with amazing views of Mt Taranaki, and of the whole region out to the ocean!
This was on my second walk of the day -the Veronica track, after already walking the Maketawa loop. After the cache I continued up to the lookout for more mountain views, and after returning to the visitor centre I did the short Connett loop walk too....time for head back to New Plymouth for a big burger I think! Thanks for the cache.

This weekend adventure had been 2 months in the making. An off the cuff comment made at a geocahing event late last year led to the planning and execution of a weekend in the Taranaki including summiting Mount Taranaki. I had a great time roadtripping and climbing with Gr33nslime and TwigNZ. We only collected 50 caches in total but had an amazing experience and saw some very unique hides. We logged our finds as team GST.

22 of 50 found this trip
We planned to get this cache on the way up the mountain to the summit but ended up on the wrong path (due to a lack of attention to the map/gpsr) so after reaching Tahurangi Lodge on the way back down we made sure to get on the right track to make the find. This was a more enjoyable track with better scenery although not so well maintained as the main one we took on the way up. We located the likely trig location from 700m away and as we neared it was looking good. Except for the couple standing near the little path to the cache taking photos. I chose to carry on and talk to them first before dissapearing in to the bush. In the meantime TwigNZ, who was folllowing a few minutes behind, dived in and made the find.

Thanksf or placing a cache here as I wouldn't have discovered this track without it. I think doing it on the way down was the better choice as it is a longer path than the may track/road up and it was a tough hike up to the summit.

# 1309 Yay, this weekend it was time for a roadie from the Hutt Valley up to Taranaki, with the prime mission being a summit of Mt Taranaki, and the secondary mission being 2bullbars smiley trail. There were a few other caches added for good measure too. Team GST as we named ourselves consisted of Gr33nslime, stardust718 and twigNZ. All up we found 51 caches and only two DNF so that is a pretty good hit rate. Sorry for the bulk log here. Thank you very much to all of the cache owners for placing and maintaining the caches that we had the pleasure of finding on this trip.

Found this one on the way back down from summiting Taranaki. We intentionally chose this way back down to pass by this cache. The choice probably added a half to three quarters of an hour extra to the trip but it was worth if for the more interesting scenery and the cache. The two other members of our team made the find while I looked after the bag. Cheers for another cache on this small hill Windyglen.

This weekend I was finally going to get to climb Mt Egmont, something I have wanted to do for a while now, even before I discovered Geocaching!

I was part of a great team of 3, the others being Stardust718 and Gr33nslime, so for most of our logging this weekend we simply signed ourselves as either "G.S.T" or "Team G.S.T" depending on size of log sheet.

Having just come back down the mountain after successfully reaching the summit, we took a different track back from Tahurangi Lodge to The Camphouse (where we were staying) in order to try to find this cache. Nearing GZ, the others had walked ahead of me and had missed the sneaky little path towards where the Trig should be. I spotted it and started up the hillock only to have to end up crawling on my hands and knees to finally reach it.

Not so much a Trig Point as a Trunk Point these days, with Trunk being the abbreviated version of Truncated! The cache itself was a quick find, but a slower signing as I had neglected to bring my pen with me so had to ask one of my colleagues to crawl through towards me with one.

Thanks for placing this cache.

One of my goals for 2019 is to complete the 366 day challenge and today is another dot day. Fortunately I’ve still 23 caches to find and log in Taranaki - most are on the mountain - including this one. So today Juty Bug & I are on a quest.
This Summer if you want to get a park at the North Egmont Road end you’ve really got to be up here early. We arrived at 08:15 and got one of the last two parks and they were for a maximum of three hours, but that was more than enough time.
20 minutes up to the trig. I was surprised to see the trig has been truncated so wasn’t visible from down the track where I was expecting to see it. Showed JB the ‘easy’ route to the trig - certainly not the route he and TT used to get the FTF.
Took a bit to find the cache, as it wasn’t quite where the hint suggested, but eventually I found it just as JB was utilising PAF.
Unfortunately the mountain was shrouded in cloud, but that did not spoil the the experience. I can’t believe it’s been nearly four years since I was last through here. TFTC All good here.

steps so many steps, thought i would test myself and see how fit i am and put on a 20kg pack, not as fit as i thought, so a trip to the top of the hill will need more training, the pack also did make the last 10mtrs more fun, had to crawl. did get your note CO so added some pics as a little bit of proof, awesome cache and the highest cache I have done TFTC

While mørketid (the polar night) is upon us back home, I decided to be brave and fly south to find summer. So far, I'm not too disoriented, the summer looks a lot like home Big Grin.
I came to the visitor center yesterday evening, betting on an improvement of the weather over the night. When I arrived I could not even guess where the volcano could be [:o].
So, on the morning of my fourth day, the sky is still so-so, but at least I can see there is a volcano nearby! Not like I can see it properly, but parts are sometimes visible between the clouds Smile. After a chat with the people at the visitor center I decide to give an attempt to get to the Tahurangi lodge, there has been a couple of openings, I may get lucky up there. Besides, the summit is still full of snow and I don't have my equipment for that...
Reaching the lodge, I'm properly soaked. I waited for half an hour hoping for an opening which never came. But I still feel ok enough, to attempt the loop coming back to the visitor center. They really advised me to do it if I felt like it because the view is supposedly breathtaking over there. I also decide to attempt it because is an opening occurs, I will still be up enough to enjoy the view. And anyway, I'm so wet now, it won't change much if the weather doesn't improve [:o)]. That was a good decision! Not like the weather really cleared out, but I had a couple of "wow" moments when I could imagine how the view could be with better weather Smile.
On the way down, I noticed this cache, so I decide to give it a try. First I turned quite a bit before realising where I had to look for it, and when I got the "solution"...well... I had to transform into a wild boar to get to the point Big Grin!! But I finally manage and the box is almost immediately found. I try my best to protect the log book from the rain, but it's already quite wet... I sign and get back on my way.
In the end, I will have received a decent amount of water, but it was totally worth it Smile

The previous day we could not really see Taranaki from New Plymouth, so the next day wev just drove north, but fortunately I looked back and saw just a little cloud on the mountain. So we turned back Smile and drove to North Egmont national park entrance, then went for a short hike to the lookout just above the tree line. We had to wait a but for the perfect picture and it was a bit said when we realized we could have gone all the way up, but in the morning it did not look like that at all ... Typical New Zealand Very Happy

On the way down I found the little path through the bush and reached the cache. No problems finding it.

Thank you for the cache!

Visiting New Zealand for three weeks. Having circled most of the South Island in two weeks I sailed across the Cook Strait and zigzagged around the North Island, from Wellington to the west coast and Hamilton, then past Rotorua and Taupo to the east coast and back to Auckland and Northland.

We parked at Egmont North to have a little stroll around to have good views to the mountain. Originally we wanted to go up but after we had a look at the weather up there we cancelled.
We found the hidden path and the cache quickly. After we went a bit further to the Lookout. Amazing view!
Thanks for showing! Tftc

Originally planned to be heading up mangorei Rd but with a side trip to inglewood we nipped up to the egmount visitors centre instead and selected the Virginia track as a walk for the day.

This one only added a little detour from the turnoff point and enabled us to head up to the lookout as well.

Found the trig track easy enough, had to push through some of the growth but it was clear where the track went.

Cache quickly found and logged.

Cheers.

Extended Veronica Loop by going up to the ridge with slight detour for this. I didn’t see the access point at first. Had to time my emergence back on to the path carefully due to muggles at the seat. Great view from the GZ.

Once upon a time there was finally a sale between CHC and NPL, and I managed to grab a seat! The anticipation of the holiday was killing me, as this was to be the first time I set foot in Taranaki, the last unchartered territory in NZ for me. Since the wait for the dates was unusually long, I even got a chance to do some planning and pick a few nice caches to look for. I was hoping to go for a few walks also.
I had a slightly different plan for today, given that this was a best weather forecast of my stay. Unfortunately the noise at the YHA kept me awake until 2am (and it was thanks to staff as I found out!!!), and I was in no state for too much adventure. Never mind, I went for smaller trips instead, finding some amazing caches!
I definitely did not make this one easy for myself! I though I found the path, and ended up handing off vegetation and pulling myself up, thinking that I will need to find a better way out - and I did! TFTC!!

This was my favourite find of the day... because I loved the walk and the views and the challenging last few metres to GZ
The cache was not in the first place I looked but only took about 2mins of searching... Yay I found it!!
The logbook was fairly wet so I stayed for about 20mins drying it out in the sun, adding another plastic bag and a dessicant sachet.
Took out an eyeball (not literally thank God - but I can imagine it's possible up here!) and added Nemo.
Thanks for the cool cache!

Went up to the look out today and a little bit further to have a nice few on the Mt. Egmont. On the way back I got this cache. With my two meters I had nearly to rob though the bushes. But thanks to the hint it was easy to find. The can was full of water. I placed the can up side down so no water can collected inside the cache.

Thanks for the cache and many greetings from Germany.

Cache number 3514 and day 109 of my current streak. On my way to the Holly hut for an overnight tramp with my daughter. While she sat on the seat I went ahead. Tried the overgrown track with my full pack on but decided this was not a good idea. Back down to her and dropped my pack. This made for much easier progress. Once at GZ I search around. It took me sometime before I was able to get my hands on the cache. Signed and returned it. Then it was a retrace my steps and pick up my pack and it was onwards and upwards. Thank you for the placement.

Visited cache today - still in place although the Survey people have cut the top part of the trig beacon off and it is no longer visible from above or below as you approach the trig point. Will make the co-ordinates even more important if you want to find this one. Log is a bit wet but still writeable

After a huge walk yesterday up to the Pouakai Tarn and hunting caches along the way we decided to take advantage of this great weather and do another hike this morning. We left Egmont visitor centre via the translator track, up the puffer (my calves are now shot) to the Tahurangi Lodge for a hot cross bun or two to revive us. Walked to the Humphries then made the turn to go back down to the visitor centre via the trig/lookout. Was very surprised that this cache is the only one we came across in the 15kms we trekked today so a FP to you. Loved the little pathway up to the Trig! TFTC

Over here for a week visiting my sister in New Plymouth before heading to the mega this weekend, I wanted to try and get a few caches and with the weather being kind we came up the mountain for look and lunch before my sister and her partner went back and I stayed for some caching. Made my way up from the Camphouse one lower down, it's only 900 meters, how hard can it be?

Well it was a fair walk with lots of steps and only about 300 metres higher than the visitor's centre but eventually found the seat and could see the trig, but how to get there. A short look and I spotted the overgrown side track jut uphill from the seat and made my way to the trig. Unfortunately despite a good long look around I came up empty handed and had to admit defeat after about 40 minutes which is a bit disappointing after the effort to get here, but still the views were certainly worth the walk with a nice clear day and of course a spectacular look closer up at the mountain itself.

I have since been in contact with the owner and it shouldn't have been that hard once there, and it certainly sounds like I was checking in the right spot. Oh well, one for another visit I guess though I doubt it will happen before I head to the mega. Next visit to my sister who knows when. Thanks Windyglen.

Took advantage of a Woo (Window of opportunity) to sneak up to the trig in Summery conditions with Juty Bug. Found a track leading off but it petered out near the trig. Being smaller it was easier for me to push and climb up and through the leatherwood. Juty Bug got so 'hung up' about it he went down and around finding the easier route up. Arriving at the trig with small patches of snow around it we soon found the camou cache. Thanks for the cache Windyglen. There was a reasonable view of the summit as well. A {FTF} with Juty Bug.
