Logs
We had planned to camp the night at the campsite but weather was not for camping, so still walked the old tram track there and back, arrived back drenched at the campsite eating area we made a hot drink and some spag bowl before heading home, this cache took way longer than it should have as it was an easy find once I spotted it.
Christmas Day 2021 is largely being spend in the company of the Seagnoid, and we have decided that a damn good tramp in the Tararuas is exactly what's needed for the pair of us.
We'd initially thought about doing the Totara Flats walk from Holdsworth to Greytown, but changed our minds due to a couple of considerations and instead elected to tramp the Mikimiki track as a daywalk, which would give us the chance to find a whole bunch of archived Skindo caches, including this one.
We had looked for the previous incarnation of the cache here, and had failed to turn anything up, but in looking for it tS accidentally found this one. No issues with the cache, which was soon sporting 2 new names in the log.
Thank you for setting this cache up

We spent some time hunting for the earlier cache here. As part of this I walked a little further and found this cache before I had even seen that there was a second cache here! And then I saw the recent logs - this cache is not archived!
And around about here I realised that this is no simple tramping track, that this is a railway, and we started seeing old sleepers as we walked to Kiriwhakapapa. On the way back we sawrailway irons as well (exceptthat the rail are made of wood, so I guess "irons" is not really the right word. See the attached photos.
TwigNZ and I had been planning an overnight tramp for some time, but then it got cancelled as someone else would like to some along. So we'll team up with them and do that one later. Instead Twig and I set up two day trips, with the same plan - looking at Skindo's incursions into the hills. Today is Mikimiki to Kiriwhakapapa. I brought a dog along - a little knee high schnauzer named Ash. Ash did both trips practically running all the way - and then slept for a day afterward!

...Today is 9 October 2021. Going through my Drafts on the Garmin I realised I forgot to log quite a few geocaches this year! So I'm catching up.
Sveppi and I have been trying to hunt Kiriwhakapapa quite a few times, but this is our first time accessing the area via Mikimiki. Quite different from this end. We bumped a few deer around the place but we still haven't managed to secure some meat. This new hobby of ours means we don't spend as much time geocaching these days... but sometimes we make time for a cache.
The date was 6/6/2021 when we looked for this cache. It's been so long that I can't even remember what the hiding place looked like. Must have been an easy find!

Walking the Mikimiki track today, seven of us enjoying a beautiful sunny day and a dry track. I have walked this track before and collected the caches along the way in 2012. This one must have been placed since, so it was satisfying to collect it and have a complete trail of smileys. The coordinates were spot on and the suggested hint worked well for a quick find. A clever little hide which does not even require stepping off the track. Although not visited for a long time the contents are in good order, thanks wb1116!
#6734. With daylight saving coming to an end soon, I decided it was time to do another hike in the Tararuas. Todays target is the Mikimiki Track. I had been up the Kiriwhakapapa previously to the saddle but had not done this side of the loop track. I was surprised at the fairly easy gradient of this track and the really interesting and attractive range of forest types in this valley. Any logbooks found today that were damp or had paper falling apart, I added fresh waterproof paper.
I had an idea about where this cache might be hidden and searched carefully for about five minutes for the crafty hiding spot. But I was wrong. Eventually I found the cache in a completely different sort of hiding spot but one that fitted nicely with the name of the previous cache hidden in this spot. A clever hide. Glad I broadened my search image. Signed the logbook and replaced the cache as found. Thanks wb1116 for the cache.

I had been along this track back in 2015 on a day when I was only able to conduct brief searches for geocaches. There were six that remained unfound so I returned today for another go at them. Things went well and I found all six and found myself close to this one that had appeared since. It turns out I was the last finder of the now archived cache and I think it likely that the replacement is in the same place although I can't be sure. Thanks, wb1116 , for placing a cache here as it rounded my adventure off nicely.
These school holidays to keep me getting out and about, I have set myself the goal to find a geocache every day of the holidays. So far, I have kept to that goal and found at least one geocache everyday!
Today, I went up into the Tararua's to find previously DNFed geocaches and down Mikimiki road to search for recently solved puzzle geocaches. It was a very successful trip; out of the 8 geocaches that I attempted I found all eight of them!
This was the only geocache I found today that wasn't a skindo geocache. It was really bushy in this area (obviously!!) so my phone was playing up quite a bit and it took its time to tell me my location compared to the geocache, so once it finished doing that and I was done walking around aimlessly, I began my search for the geocache. After going up and down and looking behind a few trees, I went back to the track to look at a few logs. Before I got to doing that, I saw something that looked a bit suspicious to me. Investigation ensued and I was glad to find that it was hiding the geocache. Quickly opened it up and signed its nice, dry and relatively new logsheet. TFTC, I had a blast today!

I had met up with my friend, agcnz, from Wellington, and had lunch. Then it was off up the Mikimiki Track to find and sign a newish cache that had bee placed on it. While we were there there were a few others that I needed to get.
Agcnz spied this one a few seconds before me.
Cheers for the cache.

Came for a walk this afternoon with Tufty. I had previously found everything else along this track before this cache was published, and Tufty had a couple more to find that he had previously DNFed. We made a clean sweep and with good accurate coordinates I made a very quick find here. All in good condition - signed log, thanks for the cache and for giving me an excuse to come along this rather pleasant track again.
#9061. Second to find. A good walk to sections of this track in the Tararua Forest Park that we had not been to before. Parked at the Mikimiki Road end and hiked almost to the saddle and back, for a total of 7.7 km return. Met a couple of dog walkers en route, but GZ itself was all quiet during the visit. Quick find. The cache was in excellent condition, all nice and dry inside. Took nothing, left nothing, signed log.

I saw this cache was still unfound after two days. I've enjoyed walking this track before, so decided to go back to find this and another one I hadn't found further up. At GZ the GPS had me about 12 metres away, but I soon spotted the hide. I was pleased to find a blank log for [FTF] at 7.40 a.m. I can't remember where the previous cache was (Cut Off), but I think it was in the same place. Thanks wb1116 for the cache, & for bringing me back in here.
