9 August 2024 17:37dalerious and I were back caching Buffalo enjoying the bountiful snow on the mountain. We were staying in Porepunkah and cached in Bright in the evening.I had walked up Apex before prior to geocaching, so have been looking forward to finding this cache and revisiting the hill after many years.Cache found in excellent condition. Thank you Dunmowin and g'day from dalerious, me and Cybergran V.
Wouldn't you know it....get here to find 3 Telstra tradie ute's doing works on the towers. Giraffe_legs made the find while I pretended to take photos. Great container! Might have to replace a couple of our own with that design. Thanks
A day off work so I had to come to the 'big smoke' to do some groceries.Except my lift to town dropped me off way too early to do stuff so figured I'd go check out this lookout. One of the few caches unfound in bright.Initially unsure of what to do, I had a lovely chat with one of the bike store hire owners who suggested an alternative "local" path upto apex lookout which i ended up taking their advice upon.Highly recommended. The locals call it the "goat track" it's a relatively steep track that runs pretty much straight up through the bush till it hits the official walking track. It starts on Germantown road. I didn't take coords unfortunately at the start, only where it meets the official track. I was also advised upon a fire trail that also goes up behind the houses on mt porpunkah road that avoids the walk up that street. It starts at the end of blue hills rise a street off Mt porpunkah road. So I walked from town up the goat track to the apex. The cache was found quickly and I sat awhile and drank in the vista. Then out of curiosity I walked the official track back to mt porpunkah road then that steep road back to town (not coming across the fire trail)I took a reading where it came out onto the official track which I guess can be used to go back down as an alternative to the road itself. These areS36 43.061 E146 58.386Thanks dunmowin for hiding a cache up here above bright. A favourite point for the simple fact I can walk up to here from town via a bush track. (And back via a firetrail i didn't find) Very cool. Cheers! This cache is number 4949!
Not much mowin to be done here ! .................. but a fair bit of 4 wheel drivin ! Enjoyed the crawl up the hill (not so much Mrs rhubarbroad), and had the cache which is in perfect condition in hand logged and returned in quick time. Met a Parks Ranger vehicle on the way down ....... luckily in a good passing place. Photps are pretty good, but a fair bit of smoke in the atmosphere. Thanks for bringing us on this little adventure.
Challenge accepted and achieved ... to walk from the town centre up to Apex Lookout. The smell of the eucalypts as we walked was amazing, especially after the downpours the last two days. A fave from us for the fact we made it!
I managed to break my arm recently so am unable to drive, so walked up from town. Enjoyed the walk, but man had trouble finding the cache!Scoured the slope where my GPS was insisting - lots of suspicious rock piles. Gave up and read lots of logs. Everyone has found it so easily - well its not the first time I've struggled with a d1.5 that has posed no problems for others. Finally, one of the first logs said to stay off the slope - that explains my lack of success!

Winter holidays in Bright... As we ascended the mountain, the rain fell steadily, casting a misty veil over the landscape. The fog enveloped the surroundings, obscuring any potential views that would normally accompany such an elevation gain. Nevertheless, the mystery of the geocache beckoned us forward, undeterred by the weather's inclement conditions.
Along the way, we encountered a group of hikers bravely making their way up the mountain on foot. We exchanged friendly waves, acknowledging the contrasting methods of our journeys. Finally, we reached the summit, the geocache coordinates guiding us to a specific spot. Exiting the vehicle, we braced ourselves against the cold wind that whipped through the fog. Our surroundings were shrouded in a mysterious atmosphere, adding an air of excitement to the search.
As we made our way back down the mountain, the rain persisted, creating rivulets of water that cascaded along the trail. The fog continued to cloak the landscape, preserving the mystery of the mountain. Thanks for the cache Dunmowin.

Tagged this one yesterday during a short run up a biggish hill. I was pretty wet by the time I arrived but the views were great and the cache log was signed. TFTC!
Thankyou to Harrowang for adding a new log sheet, and to the previous cacher who reported that the log sheet was wet.
All good now - From Warwick Qld, where we are having a heatwave!

We were in the area today checking on one of own caches and had seen the logs on this one about a wet log sheet. We came prepared with a write-in-the-rain one as a replacement. Unlike yesterday the views were fabulous today with blue skies and a dusting of snow on the higher peaks from a couple of days ago. Suffice to say we are having a very strange summer!
Quick find. Log too wet to sign
Very misty view today. Would swear it was winter!!!

How hadn't I been here before? Thankfully the 4x4 saved a very hot walk. Perfect for an easier chill day in Bright. Loved the views. FP from me and the kids.
Beautiful day for grand final long weekend - this was my geosister’s first ever find so she was stoked.

After spending the night in Porepunkah and geowife and I set our sites on caching around Bright for the day.
Last one before we head home. Took the Nav straight up the 4x4 track. Few joggers I had to dodge running down it...
A beaut view to end our weekend. Tftc !

Great find, thanks. Didn’t bring a pen so will log next time we are up in this beautiful spot!
The views are certainly nice from here although like a lot of other lookouts around the state the views are slowly being obscured by the ever growing bush so I reckon in another ten or so years the views from here will be no more.
Anyway we took the easy way up - via the 4WD - to get to the top, parking adjacent to the communication repeater stations, took a few photo's of the views and then after a brief search located the cache etc. before returning to the valley below to continue our journey around the area.

Lovely views, we did it the easy way up though, perfect weather for taking photo's of Bright with all the colours of the trees. Nice spot for a cache.

After 2 days of solid rain, nice to get outdoors and up to the Apex lookout. Superb views over Bright in the autumn. Easy find when you know where to look
An early morning hike. What a great start for the day.
The cache was found in good condition with spot on coords. Thanks to Dunmowin for the placement, fun and adventure.

Found it dodging Lightning strikes. Also upgraded to premium for this one too. The pictures of the cache gave away the location for me. TFTC
Thanks for bringing us here on such a beautiful day. Excellent hide that was easily found. Tftc
Found it but forgot my pen, I’ve attached a photo of the log instead
Great spot, TFTC!

Last cache for the day before we head into Bright to pick up wifey at the brewery after her big ‘girls ride’ from Wangaratta today.
The Geo kids and I have had fun driving through the hills on this side of the alpine road today and feel like there’s plenty more to explore out there.
Last time I was at this location was a few years back during the Bright running festival where I ran up to this point... I was certainly feeling better when I reached here today in the car!
Cass made the find at GZ and was pretty happy with herself. The new log sheet was very wet and I couldn’t mark it. It was just falling apart so I made the call and replaced it with a new one I had in the car.
Thanks for bringing me back up here

Despite what the gps was saying you dont need to go down the slope in the thistles.

Many thanks to Harrowang, who made the drive from Wangaratta to maintain this cache for us. The container should now be waterproof, and there is a new log sheet.
Finally found a time to come up here and carry out some much needed maintenance for the CO’s and log a find for ourselves! We deliberately took the back way to Bright and it paid off in spades! A lovely day for an early morning drive up the steep 4WD track to the Apex Lookout. Saw a couple of cars parked at the entrance to the walking track and one 4WD at the Lookout. We had brought a variety of containers as we weren’t sure what to expect. We had a handy screw top cylinder which fitted the job perfectly, and with a new log sheet and pencil it should be more waterproof than its previous model. SL at 9am and then continued on to the other cache in this area. #2794 TFTC Dunmowin and the nice, quiet, drive in the bush away from the madding crowds from Melbourne who have just been released from a LONG lockdown.
Beautiful spot. Easy and fun find. Unfortunately log book is soaked from recent rain.
Logbook soaking. Thanks for great hide, good inspiration to get preschooler you walk up the hill.
What a walk!! Cache found nicely stashed away. Log very wet, unable to sign, needs replacing... still worth the effort
Terrific views although still waiting for heavy snows to improve the border views on the major peaks. TFTC
What a fabulous view of alpine national park. Tipped water out of container, bag slightly damp, log book OK though. Tftc
Last full day in Bright, time to check out the north side of town. I had intended to do this by foot, but Mrs Prime came for a looksee - and she don't do such hikes. So I dropped Suzee into 4WD low and turned right. Somewhat of a challenge for us, but no real issues going up (the loose pebbles under-tyre were a little annoying). And the views were sure worth it. Awesome photo opportunity of Mt Bogong on the left, Mt Feathertop on the right and Falls Creek (I think?) in between. All covered in snow. In Summer. Wow.
And the Valley below out past Germantown - very pretty - we'll be heading that way in the morning. Had to circle the enclosure once before I settled on where the GPSr was trying to point. And even then I kept looking over the side before I eventually spotted my elusive friend. The trip down was also a bit slippery in places, but didn't ever worry about sliding over the edge, so all good.
Thanks Dunmowin for entertaining me at this location.

Great drive up here wih amazing views. To bad the wife didnt think so and walked down
I have all these good intentions of writing a good log that says far more than TFTC but life just keeps getting in the way! Damn it! So I'm going back through and finding all those that I wrote TFTC or FLTF on and at least editing and noting that I had good intentions but apologising I didn't follow through and instead you get this copy and paste log!
Thank you for placing and maintaining this cache for one reason or another ( date, size, location, convenience, challenge or what not) I have selected it to find and I appreciate that it was here!
TFTC and I promise the next log you get from me I'll write something much better! Cheers TT

Great hike to a lookout I'd not visited before. Fabulous. Seriously. Don't forget a camera.
Early morning and the air was still cool
Better yet, this walking track is on the shady side of the hill until 'bout 9:30am.
So off I bolted for the apex
The grade is easy and the trail likewise,
so in three wags of a dog's tail,
I was at the top admiring the Meccano and the views
A quick cache find ...

A long weekend and for months I'd planned to go to St Arnaud and then..... [|)][xx(] Sometimes it is just too hard to make a decision[|)][xx(] Along came dalerious who suggested St Arnaud on the 26th and then straight to Mt Buffalo after that As much as I'd wanted go to St Arnaud to see my SA friends who were there for the weekend, I just didn't have the capacity[|)][xx(] for that much driving. So we ended up going straight to Mt Buffalo as dalerious had a cave/underground creek cache he wanted to find and with rain predicted tonight doing that cache immediately seemed a safer idea [^]
This was in some ways an amazing weekend as I got to see and drive parts of the HIgh Country that I had never been to before [^] The only down side was that my anxiety was through the roof [|)][xx(] and so poor dalerious had to cope with my being pretty well non functioning which meant that something as simple as driving required huge mental effort and so it was a very slooooow weekend although dalerious did find his underground creek cache while Rex and I were safety officers. The 2 rangers that came up to speak to me about Rex were pleased when showed them his paperwork as they said that no one else had ever shown them any paperwork.
From Mt Buffalo we then headed off towards 4 newly published caches and at about 23:15 we got FTF on one (the HVPT Monument) before we set up on the side of the road to sleep [|)][|)] Turned out my 2nd hand stretcher tent was deer proof [?] but it was not rain proof and the storm that came across about 1:30am complete with lightening, thunder and lots of rain had me back inside Harry for the night when I ended up lying in a pool of water in my bed [:(!][xx(]
The morning was cloudy and the clouds and fog were around us as well as below us while we had a nice warm breakfast [^] then hit the track again to get to an event on time.
The next day after attending Dunmowin's farewell event we dried our sleeping bags at a laundromat in Bright. That night, we camped at Ah Young's campground after[^], for the 2nd night in a row , picking up a hitch hiking gentleman who was camping at Ah Young's and dropping him at his tent [^]
Although we did cachenap him on the 2nd night as we still had a cache or two to find [^] before we got to Ah Young's and so we dragged him with us!
On the last morning we found a few nearby caches and then made the dash for home as dalerious had work at 3pm
All up I found 20 caches and attended 1 event and then ended the weekend by finding a HSS cache that we had DNF'd on a previous trip.
As I have been about 8 months behind in logging, I'm resorting to template logs to catch up.
My heartfelt thanks to the COs who have placed some tricky, funny, exercise required, scary, interesting and devious caches in some amazing spots! [^]
Rex and I have had some amazing adventures and enjoyed some incredible moments thanks to this fantastic hobby
Did I mention anxiety[?] Did I mention how hard it was focussing on this trip up and back when my mind was sure Harry was going to roll, tip or flip[?] I'm sure I didn't stress as much going down Herne's Spur but that's what it's like with anxiety

Joint 2TF with locus cache @3:18pm.
I had no Idea that Dunmowin had been such busy little beavers during their stay at Porpunkah.
This was to be our 4th of 5 Dunmowin smileys collected in a row today (including their Farewell Event) but purely by chance. [^]
We had Harry (a 4×4), we had time and we had another adventure.
After carefully picking our way up this testy little track, locus cache had once again steered her trusty beast to pop us out on top of the world.
I can never get sick of looking out over this country and wonder why in the hell I have spent my life living in the flat lands. [:o]
Probably because of the good friends I have and it makes me appreciate time up here even more.
Cache and contents found in good clean and dry condition and returned as such only the log book is now just a little messier. [8)]

Called up the hill, just because I love the drive, and also to pick up the two Travel Bugs that were left yesterday. Both want to travel and visit other countries, and as we are going on a cruise next month, thought I would take them to New Zealand.
Also, my own trackables visited today.

You could say it’s not far from home and the radar indicates it WILL stop raining so off we went and yes, did catch a view of clouds! Once upon a time there was a cache close by. Dropped 2 x TB’s which will hopefully be on there way to some other fab place soon. Bright of course has been a tourist hub for more than a century so welcome all geo- tourists! TFTC.
